Do you think we’ve had a good summer weather wise?

I’m in Sheffield I keep reading about what a crap summer it’s been. But it’s been pretty sunny most of the time round me.

Sunny yesterday and coming out today. But we’ve had several weeks of really hot sunny weather and lots of sunny days. This is the sunniest summer l can remember since 2003.

It feels like Autumn in the Midlands today. Problem is last summer was so warm and sunny that this one was never going to match up!

stargirl1701 · 17/08/2021 17:32

Fabulous here in Perthshire and utterly stunning the two weeks we had in Dorset in early July.

Mintjulia · 17/08/2021 17:44

I'm in the south and it's rained almost every day except one week in mid July.
It's the middle of August and I'm wearing a sweater! Sad

RoseMartha · 17/08/2021 17:45

South East and we had one mini heatwave for a week might have been in July.

Since then its been pants. Not raining all the time but dull with wind, and intermittent spitting/drizzle with odd outbreaks of sun.

U2HasTheEdge · 17/08/2021 18:00

East Anglia.

It has been shocking. I wouldn't call it a summer at all. A few nice days, mostly wet and grey.

user97495 · 17/08/2021 18:07

Midlands. I think it's been rubbish, it was really slow to get going then when it did it didn't stick around, I've spent barely any time in my garden this summer. Thank goodness we weren't locked down like we were last year.

It's not been cold, but it hasn't been very sunny.

BiscuitLover09876 · 17/08/2021 18:09

Maybe it's good for up north. For down south it's been a bit rubbish. Last year was so hot (but too hot). Used to more sun in general down here!

Oblomov21 · 17/08/2021 18:23

No. I think it's bern awful. Really really bad. Cold and miserable.

purpleme12 · 17/08/2021 18:26

No it's not been great. There's been some hot days sure. But not been hot overall

purpleme12 · 17/08/2021 18:26

(in West Yorkshire)

dementedma · 17/08/2021 18:26

Been a good summer here in Fife...for a change. Dont want it to end

illuyankas · 17/08/2021 18:27

Not really, but compared to somewhere else in the world, at least there aren't any natural disaster causing serious damage and death, so I'm not really complaining.
Assume it just get worse with ongoing climate change.

I’m in Leicestershire, which is far enough south and east that we usually get a ‘proper’ summer. This year has been below-average. It hasn’t been particularly wet but apart from 10 days at the end of July it has definitely been cooler & less sunny than normal and the highest temperature I have seen on my car thermometer was 29C. Most years we have several days over 30.

Lucillegoldenring · 17/08/2021 18:32

Awful!

In Belfast and June/early July was cold and drizzly. 10 days of record breaking heat, too warm to stand and since end of July it has been heavy November like rain everyday.

DoucheCanoe · 17/08/2021 18:33

Absolutely, I'm NE Scotland - probably had about 5 days of rain since the end of June and it's been roasting!

The schools went back today and it's been grey all day but still warm enough to be without a jacket.

headintheproverbial · 17/08/2021 18:40

I think the SE has had it unusually bad this year and that is driving this narrative whereas lots of parts of the UK have had a lovely one!!

That’s a great example of the difference in perception between various parts of the country. People in the south of England take it for granted that they won’t need a jacket between May & September and expect to be wearing short skirts & sleeveless tops from June to August.
LozzaChops101 · 17/08/2021 18:45

We're all in vests and fleeces at work down in the South East, so not really!

ManonDesSauce · 17/08/2021 18:50

I think in Scotland the school holiday starting corresponded with a good spell of weather while England and Wales were yet to break up.

user97495 · 17/08/2021 18:53

It's not "taking it for granted" it's the expected climate in the SE (climate change notwithstanding) you make us sound like spoilt children Hmm I purposefully don't live north because shit weather like this seriously affects my mood, I would emigrate if I could.

JassyRadlett · 17/08/2021 18:58

Well not quite, it’s still England.

But you have identified why I live here and would not live further north. It’s not a difference in perception, it’s a difference in normal weather - though I’ll accept that our perception of what makes a good summer may be vastly different.

I’m from a much hotter country. I just about tolerate SE England based on the hope of a halfway decent summer by SE England standards (and a visit to my home country to thaw out.) The things we do for love, eh?

TempsPerdu · 17/08/2021 19:00

I really want to be green and not fly etc but christ I crave some warmth

This is me, except it’s the lack of sunlight I’m more fussed about - I can take or leave hot weather but the relentless leaden skies over London are really beginning to affect my mood. We have an outdoor concert booked for Sunday and the current forecast is suggesting it’s likely to be a washout, like most of our summer plans this year.

We can normally suck up rubbish U.K. weather to an extent because we have a foreign holiday to look forward to in September, but not this year. We were trying to be sensible and stay at home this year, but the current run of dreadful weather has prompted us to take a last minute punt on a Spanish holiday in October.

Audit · 17/08/2021 19:10

I am a bit of a weather watcher. It has been one of the poorest summers on record in my opinion. Long cool and dry spring, some sunny days and only about six hot days strung together end of June or early July. North East - ie east of the Pennines can usually expect dryer weather than west. Cornwall has been a constant wet coolbox since the schools broke up - 15 degrees there today. Why anybody wants to relocate from London to a peninsula stuck out in the Atlantic when the gulfstream is slowing down is mind-boggling. The cool air circulating clockwise over the north Atlantic is picking up cold moisture which gets dumped on the west part of the country. Watch the blue patch because this is an indication that it is going to become wetter and cooler in the UK which is consistent with global average temperature rises....

Um, no we don't. I personally have a variety of exciting summer anoraks, chinos and hoodies which are dug out annually.

OrangeBananaFish · 17/08/2021 20:57

North Yorkshire/Co Durham. Its been OK, but certainly not one of the best. It took ages to arrive. April it snowed and May was just rainy and cold. We did have a nice June/July, but August so far has been a bit crap. Last summer and that year after the beast from the east were the best summers I remember. I certainly don't think this one will be remembered for its long hot sunny days on end.
