How often do you wash/wipe your keys?

Some years ago I started a thread asking this question, and lots of people were amazed that I did this at all! Just wondering if things have changed now with Covid.

I wash mine about once a week but I wipe them pretty much daily.

I've never even thought about doing this.

And I don't see why covid would make any difference as I'm the only person who uses my own keys.

bloodywhitecat · 16/08/2021 15:04

Never.

PotteringAlong · 16/08/2021 15:05

Never! Who washes their keys?!

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2021 15:05

Never

Retrievemysanity · 16/08/2021 15:05

Never.

LubaLuca · 16/08/2021 15:05

Never. They're only in my possession (and possessions) and hands. I've never washed my wallet or work pass either, for the same reason. These things aren't likely to be contaminated with anything but the bacteria that is all over me.

WeatherwaxLives · 16/08/2021 15:06

Why? What are you wiping/cleaning off them?

Only I touch my keys, and they're either in the lock or on a hook. What could be getting on them with such regularity that I would wipe them daily? Genuine question.

For context, I'm CEV, was shielding, and was sanitising / washing hands / wiping shopping during lockdowns. Not once did it occur to me to clean my keys!

actiongirl1978 · 16/08/2021 15:06

I've never washed a key.

I also don't use hand sanitiser any more.

Sirzy · 16/08/2021 15:07

I’m pleased to see the consensus here is never! I thought I was missing something

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2021 15:07

I've only just learned that there are people who wash school bags as often as fortnightly.

I've also never washed keys and never felt the need to. What else do you wash OP apart from the normal washing of own body, clothes and standard house cleaning, within which keys does not fall?

MistyFrequencies · 16/08/2021 15:07

Never wiped or washed my keys. Except for the time they accidentally went in the washing machine...

Goodthings · 16/08/2021 15:07

Never.

I know the garage cleaned them when I took my car in for a service in January!

NuffSaidSam · 16/08/2021 15:08

Never.

My keys are not in anyone elses hands, anywhere dirty or even in my own hands that often!

I would clean them if they fell in something, but otherwise no.

Do you drop your keys a lot?

NameChangedForAChange · 16/08/2021 15:08

Never!

MirandaWest · 16/08/2021 15:08

I’ve never knowingly washed my keys

bakingdemon · 16/08/2021 15:09

When I accidentally drop them in a puddle.

shumway · 16/08/2021 15:11

Never.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2021 15:11

Ah, I get it. Someone else in your house has lesser hygiene standards than you and their keys get dirty from them and then contaminate your locks and then your keys get dirty from the dirty locks?

Even if that was the case, I don't think I'd start wiping my own keys.

Twickerhun · 16/08/2021 15:12

Mine do get the odd accidental wash when I leave them in a pocket and put my jeans in the wash. For the record that does not do car keys much good.

Parrotanne · 16/08/2021 15:12

I clean them because they feel dirty to me! They get inserted into locks, dropped, lent out to various dc, occasionally to the man in the garage etc! It’s just something I’ve always done. I wipe my steering wheel and handbrake and gearstick daily too!

ChessieFL · 16/08/2021 15:14

Never occurred to me to do this!

RamblesShambles · 16/08/2021 15:15

Ever in my life have I cleaned my keys.

Oblomov21 · 16/08/2021 15:16

Never.
Wash? Wipe with what? How could you possibly wash them? Surely they wouldn't work afterwards?

MeanderingGently · 16/08/2021 15:17

I sanitise mine, I did before COVID. They're handled a lot when I've touched other things...going in and out, shopping, money, the car etc. (all keys on one bunch). I think it's bonkers washing hands after coming back from wherever only to have germs and bacteria still on the keys which you touch again to hang them up.
Clearly I'm in a minority though.

72WayTooCool · 16/08/2021 15:17

Never washed my keys or locks. Wouldn't ever occur to me that it needs doing either.
