How often do you wash/wipe your keys?

Some years ago I started a thread asking this question, and lots of people were amazed that I did this at all! Just wondering if things have changed now with Covid.

I wash mine about once a week but I wipe them pretty much daily.

Opened this thread expecting everyone to be washing and anti-baccing their keys 3 times a day and being disgusted with anyone doing any less than that. Pleasantly surprised to see that like me a lot of people have never washed a key in their lives.

I have sprayed my car keys with sanitiser since the start of COVID. I do it if I’ve been touching surfaces touched by many others. I also sanitise my hands when I get back in the car and from time to time I wipe the steering wheel, door handle, handbrake etc Door keys get an occasional spray too. I wouldn’t worry if I didn’t do it, but I reckon it can’t do any harm and it’s become part of my routine.

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

I have never washed my keys-it would just never have occurred to me.

@ApolloandDaphne just intrigued as to why you pretend to use hand sanitiser instead of actually using it? Seems almost harder than just using it? plus you are touching the pump that everyone's dirty hands touched without the benefit of the clean?

Because the sanitiser makes my hands red and sore.
icedcoffees · 16/08/2021 17:22

Never. Life is far too short.

Surely you just wash your hands?

icedcoffees · 16/08/2021 17:23

@Killahangilion

I don’t wash my keys but why are some people going to great lengths NOT to use hand sanitiser?

That’s seems weird.

Because it dries my skin out and makes my hands very red and sore.
GoodnightGrandma · 16/08/2021 17:23

Never

21Bee · 16/08/2021 17:28

@Parrotanne there is no such thing as ‘eco friendly wipes.’ It’s all just marketing greenwash. They go to landfill and sit there for hundreds of years either way.

@Killahangilion what are you using hand sanitiser for? I assume people are avoiding it as they keep up to date with scientific research which shows it’s essentially pointless.

Tobermory · 16/08/2021 17:41

I washed my husbands keys the other day when he left them in his jeans pocket and I popped them in the washing machine! Shock

Never washed intentionally though.
Why would you?

MrsFin · 16/08/2021 17:41

Off the point, but there is really no such thing as eco friendly wipes, regardless of what it says on the packet.
Please don't use them.

Disrespected · 16/08/2021 18:05

Never.. Its never crossed my mind.
Steering wheel etc. Yes when I clean out the car. That's about it. But that's mainly because dh has oily hands from work so can get pretty grimey

Are you talking just Covid or a sweeping statement covering all transmissible bacteria and viruses?

I think sanitising your hands does work as I’ve been using it for years and will continue to do so. I take my own and don’t use the stuff provided by shops as I don’t trust them to be as effective.

(Friend part owns a distillery and provides the ingredients…)

garlictwist · 16/08/2021 19:05

What? Never. It's not like I put them in my mouth.

PiddleOfPuppies · 16/08/2021 19:12

Never. But I've never licked them either, so I'm probably not going to die from dirty keys.
Never have I wiped a trolley, sanitised on demand in a shop nor quarantined my post either.

FlowerPower3110 · 16/08/2021 19:19

I never wash or wipe my keys

maras2 · 16/08/2021 19:24

67 years old and never wash/wiped keys.
What a weird concept. Confused

Stuffin · 16/08/2021 19:25

If I dropped them in something disgusting then I would but otherwise no. I really don't think trying to sanitise everything you touch is actually very good for us.

sanityisamyth · 16/08/2021 19:27

Never! I also use my car key frequently to pierce my son's straw drink as the paper straws are crap!!

Fireplace12 · 16/08/2021 19:34

Never

Galassia · 16/08/2021 19:47

‘How often do you wash/wipe your keys?’

I read this out aloud and my husband replied, “Are you thinking of going to a swingers party?” Hmm

21Bee · 16/08/2021 20:04

@Killahangilion there is plenty of pre pandemic evidence that overuse of hand sanitiser is causing antimicrobial resistance.

Kanaloa · 16/08/2021 20:38

Only when one of my kids sticks it up their nose or something. Or if I dropped it in mud maybe. I’ve really never thought of doing it.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/08/2021 20:38

Whenever I have been out with them due to covid as it can live on metal for some time.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/08/2021 20:46

Never, I've honestly never heard of anything so ridiculous.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2021 20:49

@ApolloandDaphne a very sensible explanation-I was def hoping for a more dramatic microchip/poison/conspiracy theory reason because it is Mumsnet after all!!

Barwell76 · 16/08/2021 20:49

It would never enter my head that i need to wash keys.
