How often do you wash/wipe your keys?

Some years ago I started a thread asking this question, and lots of people were amazed that I did this at all! Just wondering if things have changed now with Covid.

I wash mine about once a week but I wipe them pretty much daily.

wipe my steering wheel and handbrake and gearstick daily too!

😱😱 is that normal?!

I'm glad I'm not alone in the 'never' camp, I think it's too easy to get sucked into worrying about germs too much, I had to check my behaviour last year because it was getting a bit out of control.

GalaPie · 16/08/2021 15:22

I never did before covid but nowadays when I return my trolley at Tesco's I alcogel my hands on the walk back to the car and then give my keys and phone a quick rub whilst hands are still wet. When I have put fuel in the car I alcogel my hands before I get in and then rub my door handle and steering wheel whilst my hands are still wet.
It's just become routine now.

cookiecreampie · 16/08/2021 15:23

Never

LavendulaAngustifolia · 16/08/2021 15:23

Unless you're also drying them when you wash your keys, it won't be doing your locks any good and they could be rusting inside.

HelloDulling · 16/08/2021 15:23

Have never washed a key, a handbrake or a steering wheel.

ThatSunnyCorner · 16/08/2021 15:23

@MeanderingGently

I sanitise mine, I did before COVID. They're handled a lot when I've touched other things...going in and out, shopping, money, the car etc. (all keys on one bunch). I think it's bonkers washing hands after coming back from wherever only to have germs and bacteria still on the keys which you touch again to hang them up. Clearly I'm in a minority though.
If you are bothered, just wash your hands after you've hung them up. No need to wash the keys.
Chemenger · 16/08/2021 15:25

Never. And stopped using hand sanitizer months ago too, unless people are watching.

DonLewis · 16/08/2021 15:27

My husband does a dirty job. I've been known to wash his keys! (But only when he wants to put them in my handbag or wants me to handle his keys. He also had a lot of keys, I'm only talking about his house keys)

Redcrayons · 16/08/2021 15:27

Never done it. Have never even thought about doing it until a minute ago.

PattyPan · 16/08/2021 15:27

Literally never and I’ve never heard of anyone else doing it either

Macaroni46 · 16/08/2021 15:27

@MeanderingGently I hang my keys up and then wash my hands 🤗

EBearhug · 16/08/2021 15:28

Only after I sprayed WD40 to try and get the back door lock to unlock. It turns out my WD40 spraying wasn't as precision-targetted as I planned.

The garage cleaned my car key before handing it back after it's MOT/service.

But otherwise, unless I dropped them in something, never.

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 16/08/2021 15:28

Never entered my head to do this

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/08/2021 15:29

Never.

I do use hand sanitizer though (and did pre covid). I have a big pump bottle of it in the cup holder in my car to clean my hands post dog walks.

PeterCorbeau · 16/08/2021 15:29

Never in my life! I'd only do it if they got dropped in something really icky or something.

LublinToDublin · 16/08/2021 15:29

Never

Curlymam88 · 16/08/2021 15:30

I give my keys a wipe over every now and again, and my phone and the TV remote and light switches. I dont do it religiously just when I fancy doing them. Way I see it is they're things around the house that are touched often and could have germs on and just need a clean up 🤷‍♀️

CatalinaCasesolver · 16/08/2021 15:31

God there are some batshit people on Mumsnet

AnnaSW1 · 16/08/2021 15:32

Never. But it's an electric fob that opens my door. I'd probably ruin it

AnnaSW1 · 16/08/2021 15:32

Even when I had a normal key though I wouldn't clean it

ApolloandDaphne · 16/08/2021 15:32

Never done this. I don't use hand sanitiser either. If I am demanded to by someone in a shop or wherever I pretend to press it and walk off rubbing nothing into my hands.

jollygreenpea · 16/08/2021 15:34

You're not wrong Grin

I've never washed/wiped my keys and have absolutely no intention of starting.

Spidey66 · 16/08/2021 15:35

Never occurred to me.

I usually carry hand sanitizer on me but its use is back to pre pandemic levels ie after cleaning up dog poo, eating something sticky or coughing or sneezing when I've not used a tissue for some reason.

Have never wiped down shopping, and the only fruit and veg I wash are salad veg that are eaten raw and grown in mud e.g. celery or lettuce.

I have a strong immune system, have had 1, maybe 2 colds in the past 5 years (last one was 2 years back) and I put that down to having a relaxed attitude towards germs.

Megan2018 · 16/08/2021 15:36

Never. I don’t clean much in life to be honest!

Parrotanne · 16/08/2021 15:36

Hmm. At least one other person out there does this - hello @MeanderingGently :)

I wipe them with wipes and wash them in fairy liquid. But I don’t fully immerse the car key. I may be batshit (actually, I think I’m very boring in all other respects) but I’m not that batshit!
