How often do you wash/wipe your keys?

Some years ago I started a thread asking this question, and lots of people were amazed that I did this at all! Just wondering if things have changed now with Covid.

I wash mine about once a week but I wipe them pretty much daily.

Never unless they have something spilled on them or are sticky which is very rare

I don’t wash mine but if I borrow Dh keys they get a wipe. Purely because apparently he can’t wash his hand with soap and water at work. It’s antibac gel or nothing. His keys get filthy and sticky and just yucky.
Says a lot for antibac gel…

Never

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/08/2021 21:01

Dropped them down the loo.

MyMabel · 16/08/2021 21:02

I don’t need to, my toddler gives them a great once over in her mouth most days.

ufucoffee · 16/08/2021 21:04

Never. And if I ever found myself considering doing it I'd have to punch myself in the face

ExtremelyDisorganised · 16/08/2021 21:11

Never. I hang them up as soon as I'm in the front door them wash my hands. I don't wipe steering wheel etc either, or purse, cards. I do my phone once a week or so to get rid of the fingerprints.

Wolfiefan · 16/08/2021 21:12

That is actually quite mad! I touch lots of surfaces every day which aren’t sanitised. I wash my hands before preparing or eating food. I keep my hands away from my mouth.

GlitterBiscuits · 16/08/2021 21:37

@Parrotanne Are you ill less often than your friends and family because you are germ conscious?
Do you wipe down groceries etc? Just curious.

I have never wiped keys.

idontlikealdi · 16/08/2021 21:39

It's never occurred to me to do this plus the key and house alarm things are battery operated and probably not me at to get wet.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/08/2021 21:42

When I drop them somewhere mucky.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/08/2021 21:46

Every so often I look at the car key and think “this is disgusting”. I still don’t wash it though.

Zhampagne · 16/08/2021 21:46

WTF. Never.

Knittingupastorm · 16/08/2021 22:14

I’m glad this thread has a consensus of not doing it. Normally on Mumsnet cleaning threads I find myself reading them and feeling incredibly slovenly for my cleaning habits!

mswales · 16/08/2021 22:18

@Parrotanne

I’m not mad! I’m very normal and boring, and in general my cleaning standards leave a lot to be desired! I use eco friendly wipes but I admit that I should be more conscientious in this respect.
No wipes are eco-friendly, even if they are biodegradable. If you must wipe your keys every day please use a wet hanky or loo roll!
RiverSkater · 16/08/2021 22:20

Never! Same as the doorstep question on here!

NameChange74567 · 16/08/2021 22:24

Once after I dropped them down a drain.

CathyorClaire · 16/08/2021 22:33

Keys need washing?!

What fresh hell is this?

ShitShop · 16/08/2021 22:47

Literally never occurred to me to clean keys. I also don’t clean door handles or my steering wheel etc.

I do clean my phone on a semi-regular basis, as I know they’re covered in germs and I use it while cooking to read recipes etc so I sanitise it before that.

I wash my hands when I come inside, after hanging up my keys so that’s enough for me.
