I did something daring today... do you think I'll get a reply?

I was at the Drs. waiting room today and a gentleman came in and sat by my side. We looked briefly and smiled at each other. I thought he looked like a really nice person, not gorgeously handsome but there was something in him that made me want to know a bit more. He was well dressed and was wearing a name tag but I did not find the way to properly read it without being very obvious. I was trying to find an excuse to talk to him when I was called in to my appointment.

When I finished he was gone. I was just about to leave myself, when I stopped and thought: "What the hell, what do you have to lose?". So I asked the receptionist: "Excuse me, I'm going to be cheeky but, if I pass you a note would you be able to give it to the gentleman who was sitting by my side about 20 min ago?". She smiled at me looking amused and said that it could be arranged.

So I quickly scribbled this on the back of a receipt: "Hello, I am the lady sitting by your side at the waiting room earlier. I was wondering, would you like to go for a coffee one day? If not, I just hope this note made your day. Aurynne, 555-3453", and a smiley face.

I can't believe I did that!!! I'm 45, no spring chicken, but I am feeling quite excited. I have no idea whether the man is married, has a girlfriend, is gay or celibate, but even if I get no answer I am enjoying imagining his face when he gets the note. Which I really hope he gets. I want to know where he works, and why he was wearing a name tag. And what his name is. And most of all, whether he thought he'd like to know me too, or if it was all in my head only.

Do you think I'll get a reply?

Has anyone else done something like this? Please tell me what happened while I nervously wait for a message that may never arrive!!!

Let's hope there wasn't someone else sat on the other side of the OP & the receptionist passes it to the right guy

Buffyfan26 · 16/08/2021 11:04

Place marking - hope he messages you back OP Smile

So many miserable posts on a happy, hopeful thread.

I'm in NZ. My GP surgery is open all weekend for walk ins. It's quite flash, all the receptionists are lovely and generally know the patients.

It might not be how it is in the UK but that doesn't make it illegal or immoral fgs.

I think I would do that just to be mischievous! Wink

I'm just back from an afternoon shift and I find 8 pages of replies! I never thought I would attract so much following. Just finished reading everyone's messages, except for the ones which were deleted which, to be honest, I'm very curious about. I am also quite amused someone even managed to report my thread... About what exactly?

My doctor's appointment was on a Monday 11.30 am, as I have mentioned before in many of my previous posts, I live in New Zealand. I'm also a health professional myself and it never crossed my mind that passing a note to someone (a respectful note I assume the receptionist read before passing along, to make sure it was ok) could breach any confidentiality. Whose? How? If the man had binned the note, how would his confidentiality have been affected exactly?

We are also covid-free in New Zealand so yes, people sit close to each other in GP practices.

Anyway, I actually have the next chapter of the story. After the appointment I was meeting a friend to go for a walk before my shift and told her about my cheeky note. I had barely finished the story and was saying that I'd probably never hear back from the poor guy, when my phone pinged. I was absolutely sure it would be a friend, or a message from work, and even laughed and said "this will be him" in jest.

It was actually him! I got a lovely message from the guy, saying the note had indeed made his day, but that as he has a wife and small daughter the idea of a coffee with a mystery woman was probably not a good one. But, he added, he is working as a real estate agent (which explains how well dressed he was, uncommonly in New Zealand, and the name tag), if I ever wanted to buy or sell a house to feel free to contact him professionally.

So no romance unfortunately, but a hilarious experience. And who knows, the next one may be single 😜

@AlbertBridge

I just hope it wasn't the STD clinic.
She said it was the doctor's surgery. No need to be so rude and offensive.
50ShadesOfCatholic · 16/08/2021 11:09

Aw great update. I'm dying to know where it was, can totally picture this happening at my surgery. ☺

Pebbledashery · 16/08/2021 11:13

Least he was honest and told you about his wife and child, he could've been a royal bastard and not told you and entertained you. Good to see a decent man out there.

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2021 11:14

It was really nice of him to reply, and now you have a contact in the property business. Grin

LimberlostLark · 16/08/2021 11:20

If you really wanted to approach him wait outside

I'm clearly out of touch Grin. Someone waiting outside the Dr for me to ask me out is way more creey (to me) than being passed a note for me to call/not call as I wish.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 16/08/2021 11:23

This actually reminds me of a friend meeting her future husband, she nursed him when he was having an eye on.

AlbertBridge · 16/08/2021 11:24

I live that update! This still feels like fate to me. Maybe he'll sell you a beautiful house in the future which happens to be right next door to your future husband...

SamiReed1 · 16/08/2021 11:26

@MichaelMumsnet

Hi all. We've taken a look behind the scenes and the OP has been on the site for years so we'll let this one run. As always, if you have any concerns about a post or poster then please report rather than posting on the thread - we're always fine to take a look.
Christ almighty! Is there a single thread on this board, in it's history, that hasn't been reported? Not an attack on you Michael, nor on you hard-working mods, just can't believe that even an innocuous sweet thread like this is reported. Bloody ridiculous! These 'reporters', 'troll hunters' (who are the real trolls!) etc need to get a farken life! And should be banned from this site. Wtf is wrong with these people? I honestly don't think there is a single thread on here that isn't reported.
SamiReed1 · 16/08/2021 11:29

Oh OP, I had been keeping an eye on this thread and hoping for good news. I'm sorry. But nothing ventured nothing gained. Flowers Cake

AbsolutelyPatsy · 16/08/2021 11:30

aw
well done op,
you made his day Smile

WitchBaby · 16/08/2021 11:30

Love the update, OP.
Hope you have better luck next time Wink

AbsolutelyPatsy · 16/08/2021 11:30

do you need to buy/sell a house? Wink

Why should people who make a report to MNHQ that they think a thread is a troll should be banned from the site? It’s completely anonymous and would really help people to stop pouring their heart out / sharing wee stories / talking about poo to what is obviously a troll

SamiReed1 · 16/08/2021 11:36

@Shirleyphallus Because these people are clearly taking the piss themselves. And doubt even 3% of threads are troll threads. So many threads I've seen Mumsnet have to comment on re 'reports', and the threads are about ordinary every day mundane stuff, and who in the right mind would think the OP of those is a troll? Now you can't even post about babies having diarrhoea, on a MUM'S forum, without being reported. It is ridiculous and it's gone too far. If someone started a thread about their favourite potplants, someone would report the OP of the thread.

garden4569 · 16/08/2021 11:38

@Lumpwoody

I’m really uncomfortable about it.

I don’t understand why people are cheering it on either.

My dd is going to the doctor today. So it’s ok if some random bloke gets the receptionist to give him a note with his number on it and a sleazy message?

jeez, get a grip. it wasn't a sleazy message, she hasn't followed him, sat on his lap or stared incessantly at him.
nothing wrong with a message being sent, good luck OP :) and ignore lumpywoody, she has clearly forgotten how much fun life can be if you're brave enough to enjoy talking to a random stranger.
Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2021 11:40

Calm down. MNHQ welcome reports, what they don't welcome is people trollhunting on the actual thread. That's the only way they are going to get to look at the real trolls on here.

SamiReed1 · 16/08/2021 11:43

@Sparklingbrook I know that, but I feel you are missing the point. Most threads (and almost all innocuous ones about mundane life) seem be reported going by the Mumsnet message input, and there is simply no need for most to be reported.

Iloveginger · 16/08/2021 11:44

My post that was reported for troll hunting was more of a plea to the people that seem to have developed PTSD from reading this thread, to consider that it might not be real.
It was a tongue in cheek post that seems to have gone over the head of some posters, which judging by some of the responses on here shouldn't surprise me.

WorraLiberty · 16/08/2021 11:44

Oh well at least this story has a swift ending, rather than running into 1000 posts of happy/clappy squealing "UPDATE! UPDATE OP!" "I NEED TO BUY A HAT" 😂😂
