What nail colour is suitable for a funeral?

I have to attend a family funeral soon and plan to go and get my current colour (bright pink) changed to a more suitable colour. I mentioned it to my DM yesterday and she asked what I would have to changed to. She was aghast when I said probably a dark, muted red. She thought I would go for a natural/nude type colour. These colours look terrible on me. Is dark red so bad?

Strongly coloured nails are attention grabbing. A funeral isn't the place. Get some clear varnish and have them done after the funeral.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 13/08/2021 09:51

I agree nude or French manicure

Or just get the polish removed and then get the colour you want after

BreakfastOfWaffles · 13/08/2021 09:52

I would say any single colour in the "usual" spectrum would be fine, so red, pink, taupe etc that goes with your outfit. You don't want your nail colour to jar with what you're wearing, and I would avoid the more "fun" colors like yellow, blue etc

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 13/08/2021 09:52

I personally wouldn't care what you wore but I think perhaps red is seen as sultry by your mum. You know, red lipstick, red = sexy, that sort of shit.

Tbh, I doubt anyone will give a shot what colour your nails are while they're mourning at a funeral.

This.

If I was being generous I’d say a very dark burgundy would just about be acceptable. But personally I’d much rather err on the side of not drawing attention at all. So for me it’d definitely be clear manicured nails. Next best option would be a nude.

GalaxyGirl24 · 13/08/2021 09:54

Eeek I wore bright red lipstick to DHs grandmas funeral and bright nails🤦🏾‍♀️

Maybe go french fade or nude x

ExpressDelivery · 13/08/2021 09:54

I can't imagine a world where spending time thinking about your nail colour for a funeral happens Grin Sometimes I think I live in an alternate reality.

If you did ask me what's appropriate (you did) I'd say none, but I can't really imagine anyone cares.

TomDaleysCardigan · 13/08/2021 09:55

For every funeral I've ever been at, I couldn't tell you what colours people's nails have been 🤷‍♀️ really don't think it matters

I disagree. At my uncle's funeral I briefly forgot to change out of my driving shoes (black with a small flash of purple, barely visible under long trousers) and my DM was livid. A lot of people have very strong feelings about respectful presentation at funerals and I would always err on the side of caution when emotions are running so strongly anyway.
HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/08/2021 09:55

Dark red would be fine. Not a bright "garish" red.

I can't imagine people are going to be paying much attention to your nails.

PleasantBirthday · 13/08/2021 09:56

I think the important thing here is to look dignified and as though your priority at a funeral isn't your nail colour. So just have short nails and clear varnish.

brittleheadgirl · 13/08/2021 09:57

Presumably you're going to a funeral because someone has died?

Does that not trump your issue with dark colours suiting you better?!!

Ditch the polish and start trying to prioritise what actually matters in these sort of situations.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/08/2021 09:58

They won't be clear or nude. I guess i worded my OP badly. I am definitely going to have them done dark red. I just wondered what others thought of this. I've been to a funeral with bright green nails but that was a friends funeral and I knew it would be fine. This is my FILs funeral. DH doesn't care what colour my nails are. I was just surprised that dark red was seen as not right. I thought it seemed very respectful.

I've never considered my nails 😳 but I know they were cobalt blue for dhs nan's funeral in April. I only remember because mil commented it was nans favourite colour.

I couldn't tell you what colour anyone else had on their nails and I doubt anyone would remember mine. At then end of the day, it's a ceremony to say goodbye, no ones going to think too much on anything but feelings and the loved one.

This. I couldn't tell you what clothes people wore at my dad's funeral last year, let alone what colour nail polish they had on. I literally didn't notice/register and wouldn't have given a shit if I had.
Galassia · 13/08/2021 10:01

Wear gloves.

PleasantBirthday · 13/08/2021 10:02

Don't you have anything more to do for your own father in law's funeral than get your nails done? How do you have time for that? Or time to even think about that?

IntermittentParps · 13/08/2021 10:03

Me either.

Although at DP's mum's funeral, everyone was asked to wear something purple (her favourite colour) and I had my nails done a sort of imperial purple.

Your poor dh. He's lost his father and has a wife who seemingly is just completely preoccupied with herself and the colour of her nails. To the extent that she's sharing it online with strangers!! You sound utterly self obsessed, I can't work out if it's bizarre or just really sad.

I'm guessing op doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about others?
Ivy48 · 13/08/2021 10:08

I would care. It’s respectful. I changed my red glitter for a pale nude for my grandfathers funeral as red felt in appropriate

cariadlet · 13/08/2021 10:08

I've only ever been to 3 funerals. My dad's was a couple of years ago. I have no idea what colour nail varnish anyone wore. It was the last thing on my mind. I would have noticed if someone had turned up in ripped jeans and a t-shirt, but as long as people showed their respects by being clean and tidy, I didn't look any closer.

SoupDragon · 13/08/2021 10:09

And you can tell all that about the OP from a single thread on MN?

The OP has said - her DM cares about her nail colour.
idontlikealdi · 13/08/2021 10:13

I don't think I've ever noticed or cared about anyone's nails at a funeral.
