Anyone else see lots of people buying bottled waters?

Like those 1 or 2 litre multipack bottles?

I've just been to Tesco express (it's tiny) and two separate customers were complaining that there wasn't any big bottles of water about

I thought that was a coincidence, but thinking about it, I keep seeing lots of people in Asda and Aldi doing this too!

I mentioned it to the guy at the till and he said he'd seen an increase for sure, though he wasn't sure why. Last time he saw it was during the first lockdown and they ended up restricting the amount you could buy at once anyway

I know people like bottles water for various reasons, and I have a friend who's DS won't have anything else due to his autism. But surely this is unusual?

Fere · 11/08/2021 19:54

Yes, I saw someone with a trolley full 2 liter bottles, maybe 15-17.

dementedpixie · 11/08/2021 19:55

I have seen shelves empty of all different sizes of bottled water

I’ve always seen people buying them, I have no idea why, water is water to me.

WisestIsShe · 11/08/2021 19:56

Ddog won't drink tap water (yes really) so we but this every week.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/08/2021 20:00

There have been supply problems due to lorry driver shortages so yes when it comes back in stock people will be buying more than usual.

NannyAndJohn · 11/08/2021 20:04

Stocking up in preparation for the next lockdown, most likely.

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2021 20:04

I think people see empty shelves, panic and buy what's left. Probably even if they don't even use it.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/08/2021 20:06

DH stocked up because he was taking the kids camping to basically a farmer’s field with a portaloo and wasn’t sure if there would be drinking water. I think there’s been a lot of those pop-up type campsites due to the demand for UK holidays so that might explain some of it.

Why, will their taps suddenly cease to work? Confused

If it's a lockdown you want it's all about the pasta, but TBF I think people are wading their way through all the stuff they panic bought last year.

yep

I like bottled water & drink it but I have a tap so I'm not going to run out. And if we got to the point that the tap water wasn't drinkable or working then I'm not sure my first thought would be "glad I bought a multi pack"!

OldTinHat · 11/08/2021 20:09

Yep, I always buy 2ltr bottles of water. LOTS of them. Tap water where I live is like drinking a mashed up chalk. I've bought them since I was 12 and now I'm on the cusp of 50 🥳

Exactly. People are very strange.

There's loads of gaps on shelves at the moment due to a variety of things, mainly the lorry driver shortage.

kowari · 11/08/2021 20:10

Reusable bottles are promoted, but there is a shortage of public refill taps. I can drink 2 litres on a day out and don't want to carry that many empty bottles around so might take a reusable plus bottled water.

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2021 20:11

Our tap water isn't the best, we have a Brita filter jug that works it's magic.

I was in sainsburys & the bottled water shelves were completely empty. Got my flavoured fizzy ok though 👌

Wobblywibblywoo · 11/08/2021 20:21

I assumed it was all the campers/caravaners stocking up (I live in a tourist area) but otherwise it’s quite odd.

Lulu1919 · 11/08/2021 20:24

I've struggled to buy Tesco value or plain Tesco fizzy water for a couple of weeks now....I'm in my last bottle !!!

AfternoonToffee · 11/08/2021 20:26

I was on holiday last week, experience has told me that the local water is not too nice, I struggled to get some even on my shopping order and it never came in the end. I also did a shop for my parents in Devon, I usually get them a 5l bottle which they use in the (hired) beach hut, but I couldn't get that either.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 11/08/2021 20:27

I assumed it was down to the massive increase in staycations and camping. I've never camped myself but the families I know that do, always buy big bottles of water to take so I just assumed that it was "a thing".

Galassia · 11/08/2021 20:28

I don’t drink tap water and buy lots of still bottled water.

MsIreneWinters · 11/08/2021 20:58

We have this too but I thought it was just supply chain due to numbers isolating previously. All sorts of stuff is missing in our Asda- I'm guessing preppers aren't stocking up on aubergines or cinnamon sticks, both of which have been unavailable for a while.

Threads like this don’t help.

I wouldn’t have any idea if our local super markets have bottled water as I never look for it!

Why do people buy plastic bottles of water?

One use plastic and can get it from a tap!
