Anyone else see lots of people buying bottled waters?

Like those 1 or 2 litre multipack bottles?

I've just been to Tesco express (it's tiny) and two separate customers were complaining that there wasn't any big bottles of water about

I thought that was a coincidence, but thinking about it, I keep seeing lots of people in Asda and Aldi doing this too!

I mentioned it to the guy at the till and he said he'd seen an increase for sure, though he wasn't sure why. Last time he saw it was during the first lockdown and they ended up restricting the amount you could buy at once anyway

I know people like bottles water for various reasons, and I have a friend who's DS won't have anything else due to his autism. But surely this is unusual?

Maybe its people holidaying? We were in a camper van last week and bought a big multipack, for drinking, making tea and coffee etc . It has also been warm and its summer when people tend to drink alot of water instead of hot drinks.

Hdhdjejdj · 11/08/2021 23:24

Why not just try to adjust to the taste of tap water @Disrespected instead of fucking the planet for the rest of us?

MiddleEasternMummy · 11/08/2021 23:26

@WisestIsShe

Ddog won't drink tap water (yes really) so we but this every week.
I was in Costco the other day and they limited the water to 2 cases per person . There was a woman at the till making one hell out f a commotion because she couldn't buy 6 cases .... she was shouting she needed it for her dog !! Was that you 😂

I'm genuinely shocked at how much bottled water gets bought reading this thread. The UK produces more plastic waste per person than most other countries. Bloody hell it's probably all Mumsnetters who are a bit fussy over perfectly safe tap water.

TableFlowerss · 11/08/2021 23:27

how can you justify the environmental impact? How can you justify the example you are showing your child

@54321nought

Thing is, people just don’t associate their behaviours with the environmental issues. They like bottled water better so who cares if they use unimaginable amounts of plastic?

Honesty, if people just took stock of the small things that could help with less waste and pollution then things would change.

NotWanting · 11/08/2021 23:27

I used to buy 14 bottles of fizzy water a week. One week I looked in the recycling bin and was utterly disgusted with myself.

Bought a soda stream the next day. I'm no longer putting 728 bottles a year into the bin (it's also on par cost wise).

If only everyone could think like you. Well done for your efforts.
JaniceBattersby · 11/08/2021 23:34

This thread makes me queasy. All the energy involved in making the bottles, filling them, transporting them to the shop then to homes, then recycling the bottles (best case scenario..)

Please just use a filter and refillable drinks bottles. If we are to combat climate change there are going to have to be real, consequential changes much worse than stopping buying bottles of stuff you can get from your tap.

It’s such a waste of money and resources when there is perfectly drinkable water from a tap.

stayathomer · 11/08/2021 23:52

Our water was cut off at night over July. I went in and bought 2 of the 5l. As I was walking away from the aisle most people looked at the two bottles (one in each hand) then went and bought the same!!! I wasn't even in the locality! So yes panic buying begets panic buying!!

Really? What breed of dog? Sorry, it's cute but expensive.
NotMyCat · 11/08/2021 23:56

I always have some after our water wasn't drinkable for 3 - 4 weeks! Fine saying go and buy some but there was none left as everyone was affected and the shelves were bare
Since then I've kept a couple of bottles, I drink and replace them
You don't realise how often you go to turn your tap on until you can't use the water

Anyone else see lots of people buying bottled waters?
stayathomer · 11/08/2021 23:57

By the way same here on the feeling sick over bottled water but actually we used to live in an area where the water was just within the threshold of drinkable and in Ireland anyway apparently there's a fair few areas still like that so do try not to judge people. Saying that our tap water now is pretty awful but we just live with it. I di miss a nice tasting water though (but yes, all those bottlesSad)

AvaCallanach · 11/08/2021 23:58

I am on holiday in Wales
Unable to buy non fizzy water in bottles the last few days and now lactose free milk has disappeared too.

seething1234 · 12/08/2021 00:10

We live in a rural location (not very remote though) and don’t have access to mains water supply have our own well but our water has a very high iron content and looks like wee so we don’t drink it- it’s so bad it stains our white clothes in the washing machine, we recently installed rain water harvesting system and it’s not suitable for consumption. I feel very guilty that we buy so much bottled water but there really isn’t anything we can do.

It really annoys me when people where I live went mad when the government tried to bring in water charges - people should be damn glad to get clean safe water and should have to pay something for it.

I’ve noticed we Can’t get sparkling water from Tesco lately there must be a supply issue.

gamerchick · 12/08/2021 00:12

@gardeninggirl68

ive heard theres bottled water shortages

down to the preppers probably

Oh dry up Hmm
PumpkinKlNG · 12/08/2021 00:15

I always buy bottles of water in my weekly shop, for my kids for school, I’ve tried all the water bottles you can buy and every one leaks, every single one, so I buy bottled water for them, I’ve noticed it’s been hard to get it the last few months actually and often they would say it was available in my online shop

miltonj · 12/08/2021 00:29

I hate the tap water at my mums house so when I'm visiting we go out and buy a big pack of bottled water because I'm extremely spoilt Grin
I would never normally do it though.

But not every water bottle leaks. They really don't. Thankfully millions of people ARE using reusable bottles, and they don't all have soggy bags.
At the very least, refill the same supermarket water bottle rather than using a new one every day.

I honestly thought things had changed after David Attenborough gave everyone a wake up call about what plastic is doing to the planet, but this thread is just utterly depressing. All the justifying going on is just ridiculous (apart from the poster with no mains water!).
If you don't like the taste, then add a slice of lemon/lime/cucumber/a mint leaf. Or add a teaspoon of cordial. But PLEASE think about the needless waste (and broader impact) of all that plastic.

Long may the shortages continue.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 12/08/2021 00:46

I bought a soda stream the other week because of the shortage of fizzy water. Best thing ever, and I’m not buying plastic bottles anymore

TempNameChangexx · 12/08/2021 00:53

The last time I saw bottled water in Asda (about 3 weeks ago) people were buying trollies full of it.
I just assumed they were shop owners buying it cheap in Asda and selling it on at a profit but maybe there were preppers

I have thought about getting a sodastream but the water I usually buy (when they have it!) is 17p for 2 litres, and a Sodastream gas canister costs £12.99, produces 60 litres of fizz so works out at 43p for 2 litres, i.e. two and half times the price, just for the gas i.e. not including the cost of the actual Sodastream machine itself.....

PumpkinKlNG · 12/08/2021 00:54

Every one I bought has leaked and I’ve given up, you are welcome to buy me ones that don’t leak but I’m not spending any more money hoping it won’t leak only for it to go all over my kids bags and ruins all their books again. The supermarket water bottles say no to reuse them and tbh my kids rarely bring them home even when I’ve asked them to, they say the teachers bin them.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/08/2021 00:54

Isn’t that 17p a false economy though when you factor in the environmental impact?
