Anyone else see lots of people buying bottled waters?

Like those 1 or 2 litre multipack bottles?

I've just been to Tesco express (it's tiny) and two separate customers were complaining that there wasn't any big bottles of water about

I thought that was a coincidence, but thinking about it, I keep seeing lots of people in Asda and Aldi doing this too!

I mentioned it to the guy at the till and he said he'd seen an increase for sure, though he wasn't sure why. Last time he saw it was during the first lockdown and they ended up restricting the amount you could buy at once anyway

I know people like bottles water for various reasons, and I have a friend who's DS won't have anything else due to his autism. But surely this is unusual?

There's been a shortage for ages so I've just stocked up too and had to go to supermarkets other than my usual one. I'd hardly call 24 small bottles stocking up but it's more than I'd usually buy

stripedbananas · 13/08/2021 01:42

I only buy sparkling bottled water never still water. I have a perfectly good tap for that for which we reuse the sparkling water bottles.

uktrippin · 13/08/2021 01:47

@PumpkinKlNG the bottles I recommended to you didn't exist 8 years ago

You're very defensive when it comes to trying out new things. Why you wouldn't want to us beyond me, especially when setting an example to your children.

Glad you find excessive and unnecessary plastic use so amusing though Confused. Makes you look like an almighty dickhead when you're so sure the school mean for you to send a reusable bottle in.

@54321nought

I have a cup of tea when I arrive at school in the morning (6.30 am ish) and I have a cup of tea when I get home ( 7.30 pm ish)

Occasionally there is a chance to have another cup in an after school meeting

If its very hot I will have some water at lunch time

This was how we were brought up, and how many of my generation still drink - very few of us ever fell for this big advertising con

I took water bottles daily over 20 years ago. This is not a new thing.

Just because you like to be dehydrated, doesn’t mean we all do.

Notebooksarefabulous · 13/08/2021 02:05

People buying water in single use plastic bottles is part of the reason our planet is in the mess its in.

Tap water is totally fine!

LovePoppy · 13/08/2021 02:06

I tend to buy 2 24 500ml flats Of water a year.

I like yo have them for power outages (hurricanes/blizzards) or in case of boil water orders. All my water after being boiled always tastes burnt

Notebooksarefabulous · 13/08/2021 02:12

@PumpkinKlNG

Every one I bought has leaked and I’ve given up, you are welcome to buy me ones that don’t leak but I’m not spending any more money hoping it won’t leak only for it to go all over my kids bags and ruins all their books again. The supermarket water bottles say no to reuse them and tbh my kids rarely bring them home even when I’ve asked them to, they say the teachers bin them.
there are lots of options now that dont leak - not even a drop. This used to be a problem but its not now. Eg these - yes they cost more but very "look after worthy". My daughter has used hers most days for several years. If your kids teacher bins them - bill them for a replacement. Buying endless plastic single use bottles isnt the answer. Teach your kids to look after their things (a life skill initself - wrecking the planet isnt!) www.amazon.co.uk/TURTLE-CAN-Eco-Friendly-Double-Walled-Loggerhead/dp/B07CS7QLJ8/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=turtle+can&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1628816989&sr=8-5

Ah - Ive scrolled up now Pumpkin king and seen that loads have said similar to me and you've argued back that somehow you are too speshul to do what so many of us and our kids are doing.

liveforsummer · 13/08/2021 06:59

The supermarket water bottles say no to reuse them

That doesn't mean you can't - obviously they don't want you to reuse as then you won't buy more of their water.

liveforsummer · 13/08/2021 07:16

@Notebooksarefabulous fwiw I do an inward groan whenever a dc pulls out one of those bottles in class. They don't leak in bags (providing dc do them up properly) but when they are knocked over they quickly deposit the entire contents all over the floor/desk/entire tables lunch. Since these have been a thing I clean up at least one spillage a day from them. Bottles with sippers only lose a couple of drops

kowari · 13/08/2021 07:31

I've read that the plastic in PET (number 1 recycling) bottles is fine, but they can build up a bacterial film so reuse but switch out when you get a new one (assuming you occasionally buy these bottles).

Deathraystare · 13/08/2021 08:57

Someone in Sainsburys yesterday was complaining about the lack of water. Only Evian was available. Apparently there is a problem getting other water (the Scottish one they sell in Sainsbury's) and they are looking in to it.

Deathraystare · 13/08/2021 08:58

Tesco did not have much in the way of water either.

I like Sparkling water (too much still water makes me sick) so no rude comments that I could always use it from a tap!

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2021 08:59

Just been to Home Bargains. Bottled water aisle fully stocked, but nothing with a sports cap.

MonkeynutsAreForMonkeys · 13/08/2021 09:03

Won't be preppers. Preppers will be all sorted anyway.
I'm with the lorry troubles and Brexit.

I think you're expected to buy a soda stream 😆

I agree it's lorry troubles and Brexit and maybe a teeny bit of panic buying because there's not much on the shelves, so people buy the remaining stuff.

But that said, get down to Home Bargains as they seem ok.

Srsly

Um no because milk isn't piped to our homes to flow from a handy tap. I can't believe I have to point this out but there is an environmental cost to collecting, recycling, reusing and delivering glass bottles too“

We haven’t flown in 17 years, our car is a chargeable electric hybrid, I don’t eat red meat, very little white, all of my clothes are second hand and years old and I grow our vegetables.
I think we’ll carry on with our 5 glass bottles a week.

StarlightLady · 13/08/2021 11:09

I have seen plastic bottles ruin many a beach, both in the UK and further afield.

But when it comes to the war on plastic, spare a thought for the elderly widow, struggling home with weighty bottles of water in countries where you cannot drink from the tap.

gamerchick · 13/08/2021 12:10

Asda do the 800 ml glass bottles of water. They're perfect to reuse. Just fill up from the tap and stick in the fridge. I stopped buying bottled water after getting a couple of those.

Gingersay · 13/08/2021 12:18

We had a burst watermain at the weekend and Scottish water dropped off big packs of water at the end of our drive, we stuck them in the shed as it went back on not long after. I hate bottled water our tap water is the best, when we've been away the first thing I do is grab a large glass of water!

Notebooksarefabulous · 13/08/2021 12:27

liveforsummer thats a good point.

The one I have has a lower centre of gravity so doesnt fall as often. Sipper bottles do create less of a flood but we found them more bothersome to keep clean - plus the plastic content vs the ones we now have which are all metal.
