Anyone else really dislike going to the hairdresser?

I feel like I must be in some kind of minority because most people I know see it as a treat and enjoy it, but I've always hated going. I've been to numerous different hairdressers and just can't seem to find one that cuts my hair properly. I now colour it myself at home so that's half the battle, but still find it difficult to go. Anyone else avoid the hairdresser unless they absolutely have to go?

Sorry but I’m one that loves it.
However, I’m really very lax about my hair, been going to the same person for about 10 years and literally sit there and tell her she can do whatever she wants with it. She always cuts it in pretty much the same style but other than looking tidy and not ‘out there and crazy’ I have no other demands when I go.
Do you have tricky hair? It’s surprising to not be able to find one single qualified hairdresser who can cut your hair properly.
Or do you think you’re really picky?
Have you asked your friends for personal recommendations?

Me! I hate it.

I had found a lovely lady who did the absolute minimum to my hair, just a trim, that I was mostly happy with. However she is very chatty and what should be a 20 min trim turns into me waiting 15 mins past my appointment time, me then sat having my hair cut for 40 mins -because she can’t snip and talk at the same time-and, with travel time, well over an hour of my life gone.

I had to resort to a self trim over the first lockdown, I’ve done it twice more since. My last effort hasn’t turned out as well as the others so I am going to have to brave it and book.

I hate it.
I went last week and they cut my hair too short, I struggle to get across what I want it to look like, I also hate general chit chat and being touched by a stranger. Pretty sure I’m on the autistic spectrum which makes things even harder, I have tried having massage before and hated that too.

Oh me, I loathe getting my hair cut as it's never ever what I ask for. Had more fiascos than I care to count, I dread it.

Sitting around relaxing and reading my phone while someone else makes my hair a lovely colour though, I enjoy that.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/08/2021 19:26

No, I find it a chore but it needs to be done. I have a shampoo, cut and blow dry about 3 times a year. I'm pretty low maintenance.

I'd never have a massage, manicure or go to a spa. Just like to keep my social distance!

CremeEggThief · 10/08/2021 19:27

Me. I have curly hair which I always wear curly and am happy with. Most hairdressers seem puzzled by this.

Comedycook · 10/08/2021 19:27

Hate it and haven't been for years. I've yet to meet a hairdresser who doesn't give off bitchy vibes and makes me hate myself

tnetenba · 10/08/2021 19:32

I hate it. I have thick hair so I normally end up in there for hours even for just a cut, looking at my fat greasy potato head in the mirror and hating myself more every minute. Whilst trying to hear the hairdresser over the hairdryer and making ridiculously boring small talk.

I've found the answer for me now though. Mobile hairdresser, she cut my hair in 20 mins, barely any chat. The finish isn't as good but I can't see any difference once it's been washed.

DaisyDozyDee · 10/08/2021 19:32

I hate it. I don’t find it remotely relaxing or in any way a treat.
It’s a shame because I much prefer my hair when it’s short, but I really can’t face getting it cut that often.

Deadringer · 10/08/2021 19:33

I loathe going to the hairdressers, it's not the hair cut itself, it's the whole experience, sitting with dripping hair in a roomful of strangers, trying to make conversation while someone i barely know stands too close to me and pokes around at my hair, a doubtful expression on their face. Awful.

GingerBrod · 10/08/2021 19:34

What do you dislike about it?

I don't feel strongly one way or the other to be honest with you, but I have found that I've had better experience when I've been crystal clear on what I'm asking for, and when I've gone to higher end salons.

Tablow · 10/08/2021 19:35

Me, I hate people in my personal space. Head massages are torturous.

Usernamenotallowed · 10/08/2021 19:36

I absolutely hate going to the hairdressers, I always have. There is nothing that I enjoy about it. I did find one that didn't try and talk to me which was slightly better but I still hated going. From now on I'm just getting my husband to cut my hair. It looks exactly the same as when I go to the hairdressers anyway as none of the many I've been too seen to make it look any nicer.

lannistunut · 10/08/2021 19:37

I hate it too, I feel trapped because once they start you have to stay to the end. They also all really care about hair and look at me sadly when I don't have any interest.

I cut it myself at the moment, super fast Grin

Oh god, the awful head massage!!
cobblers123 · 10/08/2021 19:38

Me. I have a mobile hairdresser, she takes less time, doesn't keep talking, does what I ask her to without smothering my hair with lots of gunk or using straighteners which I hate.

She's great.

Deadringer · 10/08/2021 19:39

Another reason to hate the hair salon

Anyone else really dislike going to the hairdresser?
ChocBeforeCock · 10/08/2021 19:39

I just find it really boring! I do like the head massage though Grin

StColumbofNavron · 10/08/2021 19:41

I also have thick hair that takes ages. But mostly I just hate the small talk (and I am very sociable usually, always end up speaking to people at the bar etc and enjoy it).

I take my Kindle or a book and just say ‘do you mind if I read?’ I expect they are actually relieved.

I’ve not had a regular hairdresser since I was 17 though (I’m 40). I mostly just walk past and decide to get it cut once a year or so.

I also dislike massages etc, just find them mind numbing.

StColumbofNavron · 10/08/2021 19:43

I do like the smooth hair at the end generally speaking.

MaryBoBary · 10/08/2021 19:43

I agree. I'm never complexity happy, it never looks quite like the inspiration pics I've found and I can't bear the small talk. I do however LOVE the head massage when they wash my hair.

Blossomandbee · 10/08/2021 19:44

I don't love it. I'd enjoy it more if I could find a hairdresser who listened, advised and I clicked with. I haven't found one who was any of the above. I found one years ago who did my hair lovely and I felt great after, the next time I went she had left! Ive haven't had a positive experience since.

Vanillacupcakeyummy · 10/08/2021 19:44

I think my dislike comes from the fact I have curly hair that a lot of stylists have found hard to manage. I also think I may be on the autism spectrum like another poster mentioned. One of my family members has an amazing mobile hairdresser, so I think that may he the way to go and it wouldn't feel half as overwhelming

BeReet · 10/08/2021 19:45

Me, I hate it and haven't been for about 8 yrs. My husband cuts my hair and I don't colour it. I just cba with the whole rigmarole.

NotJustACigar · 10/08/2021 19:46

I hate it so I just cut my own now. I watched a video by Brad Mondo that explained the technique and it turns out really well. It looks like a slightly layered bob and everyone I've checked with swears it looks like a professional cut. DH hates going also so I use clippers on his.
