Anyone else really dislike going to the hairdresser?

I feel like I must be in some kind of minority because most people I know see it as a treat and enjoy it, but I've always hated going. I've been to numerous different hairdressers and just can't seem to find one that cuts my hair properly. I now colour it myself at home so that's half the battle, but still find it difficult to go. Anyone else avoid the hairdresser unless they absolutely have to go?

I never go either

Aquamarine1029 · 10/08/2021 21:40

Going to a salon is my most hated thing ever. I haven't been in at least 15 years.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 10/08/2021 21:45

I agree with you

I hated it - my hair was really long and it felt like a chore- I felt like I didn’t belong there as I have anxiety and couldn’t’mingle’

I came out not really getting what I asked for but couldn’t maintain it afterwards either

After losing a huge section of my hair to radiotherapy I have now kept my hair short after it regrew

My hairdresser now comes to my house and it’s just a better experience

Try a mobile hairdresser

Absolutely detest it. Don't think I've ever had a haircut I was really happy with in my life. See also, massage, beauty treatments, baths - ughhh, can't bear them.

LST · 10/08/2021 21:53

Me. So I just don't go. Haven't had my hair cut for 7 years.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/08/2021 21:56

Me. Haven't been in over 20 years. Can't stand strangers touching my hair.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/08/2021 22:01

Abso-bally-lutley hate it !

When I had very short hair I went in with it freshly washed so I could get a spray and cut , no blow dry or any fancy treatments .

I used to dye it myself

Now it's longer ( I went through the hideous ordeal that is Growing Out a Pixie Crop) it needed refular trims to level it then grow out to one length.

I was going every 6 months but had to have it shampoo-ed and a light blow dry , no straightening . (Not been since Pre-Covid , )
My scalp tends to flare up and I physically cannot stand having my head touched . If my scalp is throwing a strop it hurts !
And of course worse with stress .

So , no not a treat for me !

Lulu1919 · 10/08/2021 22:02

Me ....I don't mind the washing but but I hate looking into the mirror ....last time I asked them to turn me around and they did happily !!!
Same with my PT I never face the mirror when exercising...

Wintercoffee · 10/08/2021 22:04

I hate it too! Between the god awful small talk or trying to hard-sell me £28 shampoos, I really dread it but have to say she cuts my hair exceptionally well so I do go Sad. I’d be happy with a haircut every 3 months or so but she wants me in every 5 weeks!

onedaysoonish · 10/08/2021 22:04

Hate it hate it! Hate the sink thing that digs into my neck, hate the twenty mins of two people trying to get a comb through my hair, hate the small talk, hate the blow dry because they pull so much it hurts (rough dry my own hair then leave now), and hate the colour I get which always turns orange in sunlight even though that is the ONE THING I specify that I DO NOT WANT. And obviously hate the fact that it costs a fortune to get horrible hair and to sit there internally flinching the whole time. Haven't been to the hairdresser in two years - trim it myself and box dye. Will never go back

Lukki · 10/08/2021 22:04

I hate it, hate it. Tried a mobile hairdresser hated that too so I stopped a couple of years ago and got dh to cut it.

HariboHippo · 10/08/2021 22:05

@Comedycook

Hate it and haven't been for years. I've yet to meet a hairdresser who doesn't give off bitchy vibes and makes me hate myself
Exactly this. I always come out feeling worse than I went in even if my hair looks lovely.
Speakeasy22 · 10/08/2021 22:10

Hate it too. Prolonged torture. The hairdresser I go to (when I have to) is lovely but the procedure is awful. Incredibly uncomfortable to lean back in the sink because of a neck problem. I hate having my hair dried straight and, try though she might, the hairdresser just doesn't understand that. She kindly lets me leave the salon with wet hair... Lockdown worked for me...

Naaaaah · 10/08/2021 22:12

I loathe everything about it. Driving there, parking, the how do u want it conversation, being touched and faffed with, the pain of foils being dragged out, seeing my face in the mirror ageing every 6 months, the waiting around, paying a kings ransom for it......everything basically. I have to say though, I have a genius hairdresser who is lovely, gives you amazing cakes, does minimum faffing and really does make your hair look incredible. Does chit chat if you want to, doesnt if you dont. He's expensive but worth it. Can highly recommend!

BrilloPaddy · 10/08/2021 22:12

I don't enjoy it, never have done. Too noisy, someone too close....... sensory overload. It has been better since Covid with salons having less staff in etc. I've just found a really good salon though - it's on a quiet backstreet, parking outside the door, clients my age and no muzac playing at full blast in the background. I went last Saturday and due to Covid, they're all part time and share the weekly rota so at full capacity there were 6 hairdressers and their clients. Only issue is the rebooking as they don't always work the same days. But I can live with that.

hellobigknickers · 10/08/2021 22:12

Eurgh it's my idea of hell - sitting in a salon looking like a drowned rat surrounded by mirrors and 18 year old girls.

I've found an amazing hairdresser who works from her house, I have to bend over her bath but it's a small price to pay.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 10/08/2021 22:14

Hate it. Don’t like the feel of it and they never do what I ask.
Not helped by me having to remove specs and being unable to see what they are up to until it’s too late.

I haven’t had so much as a fringe trim for nearly a year and am seriously considering never having it cut again.

Watermelon221 · 10/08/2021 22:20

I completely agree op.

I never know what to ask for or how I want it finished. I basically want a quick trim and to leave but as a quick trim costs the same as a fancy cut it feels really bad value for money.

So I go twice a year and always come away hating it, wishing I’d not asked for layers etc.

I also hate the faffing around with products and massages and the inane small talk. It used to be ok when they gave out magazines as I’d pretend to read that instead.

2021mumma · 10/08/2021 22:21

I hate it too.

I colour my own hair and found a hairdresser that comes to the house and literally is in and out the house in ten minutes it’s perfect!

I think I hate it as when I was a child my parents used to always ask for more to be cut off my hair than I asked the hairdresser for so I find the thing so anxious and not relaxing at all

RoastedHazelnutLatte · 10/08/2021 22:21

Hate it too. I hate the wash and massage, hate the awkward taking of coat and them trying to put the robe on me, hate the stark lighting and view of the mirror, hate talking to a stranger for an hour, hate trying to drink tea and keep my head still, hate having to fake being happy with the end result (when really I often just feel neutral about it), hate never knowing if tipping is expected.

I put some effort into learning to cut my own hair. Just a simple cut but seems ok. Think I'll keep going with it - at least until I break and have to go back to the salon to try and get something a bit more complicated.

Watermelon221 · 10/08/2021 22:21

Yes same here with glasses
Watermelon221 · 10/08/2021 22:24

It’s nearly 3 hours for me if I have a colour too. It’s far too long to chat to someone you don’t know.

And I agree about the feigning that you like it! I’m normally crying inside at the money I’ve just spent and that I looked better when I walked in!

Iggly · 10/08/2021 22:25

I hate the hairdressers. When I was younger, I went to ones which clearly were self taught (no decent Afro Caribbean hairdressers where I lived) and would treat you like an inconvenience. You’d arrived and wait for hours to even be seen. Then they’d leave you mid treatment to go and do something else.

Then I’d act grateful even though they didn’t trim your hair as standard - I’d ask for a cut and they’d resist because “why would I cut my long hair” FFS

PattyPan · 10/08/2021 22:42

I totally agree. I have a cyst on my head which I'm quite insecure about so I don't like people touching my scalp. I also have sensitive skin so I wouldn't want to have my hair washed with salon products anyway because I'd be itching all week. I used to go occasionally and it would still be like £45 for a basic dry trim which I think is way too much to pay for an experience I do not enjoy!
I cut my own hair (shoulder length) now with DP's help for the back, and he also does clippers on himself and I help him with the back and blending the longer top bit with the shorter back and sides.

Babypug · 10/08/2021 22:49

Me! I love how my hairdresser does my hair but I hate the time it takes to do it. I'm a blonde with full head if foils so maybe 3-4 hours in the salon and then there's the cost.

Now she's on maternity leave she's offered to come to my house indefinitely at a higher price than expected but .... (but lower than the salon) but I don't have to go to the salon. I feel like this is a massive win. Only but I miss is overhearing peoples lives/ stories but I'll take staying at home any day :)
