Anyone else really dislike going to the hairdresser?

I feel like I must be in some kind of minority because most people I know see it as a treat and enjoy it, but I've always hated going. I've been to numerous different hairdressers and just can't seem to find one that cuts my hair properly. I now colour it myself at home so that's half the battle, but still find it difficult to go. Anyone else avoid the hairdresser unless they absolutely have to go?

I love it but I'm fairly relaxed about bad haircuts in that I know it'll grow back so I don't get upset about it. I also like mindless chatting about nothing Smile

jerometheturnipking · 10/08/2021 19:47

Same. I'm terrible at giving my order (so to speak) as I never know if I'm asking for the right things. The stupid massage chairs at the basins are uncomfortable - I'm too tall for them at 5'9". And the idle chit-chat. GAH. I go 2/3 times a year.

imaginethemdragons · 10/08/2021 19:48

Absolute fucking hell.
I have a dry cut.
Hairdresser is a friend.
She DOES. NOT. SHUt. UP. EVER.
It’s non stop yap yap yap yap.
It’s shite, utter utter shite.
It makes me feel nauseous.

I used to hate it but found my mobile hairdresser 22 years ago and now see my hair appointments as a catch up with a good friend. I have fine hair, never use a dryer or straighteners and like a casual look so it was a waste for me to pay fancy salon prices, being styled and blowdried with 'products' - yes it would look great but I'd never recreate it at home. Also I'd need to drive at least 20 mins to a salon, so save 40 mins by her coming to me. She's ridiculously cheap, we have a coffee and a laugh - and I don't have to sit staring at my own face in a mirror for ages Grin

Elys3 · 10/08/2021 19:49

Yes me. I found it a chore, although it usually looked ok afterwards. The lockdowns were a revelation as I found that I could colour it and even cut it well myself with some help from my bubble friend to level up the back. I also bought clippers to cut my friend’s hair. I am saving quite a lot of money.

yodaforpresident · 10/08/2021 19:51

I like the experience but really, really hate the chattering. I rarely watch television and if I do it will be some sort of subtitled drama on Netflix, such as Dark or Bordertown and they will just look at me like I’m crazy. I wish there was an option for silence.

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 10/08/2021 20:05

Me!
I can't pin down what it is about going to the hairdresser, but I just don't like it.
A close friend of mine hates the dentist. Give me the dentist any day!

Ainesskirt · 10/08/2021 20:11

The last time I went to the hairdresser I was pregnant with my youngest child. He is now 8 years old. I need a haircut, but I really do not want to go to the hairdresser.

Stovetopespresso · 10/08/2021 20:16

I hate it too! I literally get it cut once a year if I have an interview or something, otherwise its box dye and nice products to try and keep it looking ok

ParadiseLaundry · 10/08/2021 20:16

I hate it too. My hair is very long and thick and they always thin it out loads so it just looks so thin and limp afterwards. Why do they do that? Does anyone know? Surely most people want thicker hair?! I have a sneaking suspicion it's because they know it will take ages for them to dry so thinning it out means it will take them less time.

Then they always use WAY too much product so it looks greasy and limp the next day... and despite the over cutting and thinning out they never dry it properly so when the cold air hits my damp hair it turns into a frizzy mess.

Fuck that for a game if soldiers. I cut my own hair now.

KellyABC · 10/08/2021 20:36

I hate it. I find it boring, expensive and I don't love the small talk. I also hate having to sit in front of a mirror for all that time. So I cut my own hair and have done for years. Couldn't relate to people who were so much missing their haircuts during lockdown. But I'm not too fussed about how my hair looks so that helps. I have a very boring hairstyle!

Wonderbox · 10/08/2021 20:38

It’s on a par with a dentist visit for me. I loathe people touching my head.

crikey456 · 10/08/2021 20:46

I hate going but only because I have to try and hold a conversation for hours. I can hold a convo for about 10 mins.

charley50 · 10/08/2021 20:53

Me! Over lockdown I bought hairdressing scissors and now I do my own. Might go to hairdressers now if I have a big event, but otherwise I'm happy with doing my own.

SapphosRock · 10/08/2021 21:00

Me! It's makes me claustrophobic and panicky. Has to be done though.

Heatherjayne1972 · 10/08/2021 21:04

I hate it too
The chair is uncomfortable, the sink kills my neck I come out with a sore neck every time. I really really hate the cape they insist on putting on you - i don’t like it around my neck

They ask questions I don’t know the answer to
Eg - what are we doing today?
Me- ?cutting my hair
How do you want it
Me- like this but shorter

If I actually said that it would be rude. But I honestly don’t know what else to say

So I stay away

SirenSays · 10/08/2021 21:12

I haven't been to a salon in a long time. I hate the sinks that feel like a medieval torture device and the endless small talk.
I made friends with a hairdresser a few years ago and now she will come over to my home to cut/colour my hair. I can have my dog with me, listen to my music as loud as I want and then we'll typically hang out afterwards. It's bliss. Now I just need to find someone to come for my tan and eyebrow waxing and I will be set.

YogaLite · 10/08/2021 21:13

Omg, so I am not the only one who hates it, hate the whole experience from start to finish. Not been for a few years, trim mine regularly myself in various ways, shoulder length so it's quite easy really.

Yep, give me a dentist any day!

Sexnotgender · 10/08/2021 21:15

HATE IT. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

I have super curly hair, it’s really, really thick too.

So it takes like 4.5 hours for a 1/2 head of highlights and an invariably shit cut.

badlydrawnbear · 10/08/2021 21:19

Yes. I hate people touching my hair (I've got issues from my childhood), hate sitting in front of a mirror, hate making small talk.
I haven't been for a while (years), because I couldn't justify spending the money we couldn't always afford and making the time for something I didn't enjoy. Last time I went the hairdresser said something about how it hadn't been cut for a while. That was awkward.

N4ish · 10/08/2021 21:20

I hate it! I only get a wash and cut these days, cutting out the blow dry makes the experience shorter.

Hate looking at myself in the mirror and making small talk. Also really not that bothered about my hair in general which most hairdressers seem to find baffling, often end up feeling ticked off by them.

crazycatgal · 10/08/2021 21:25

I hate it.

Within the last year I thought I'd finally found a hairdresser that coloured and cut my hair as I wanted. Then last time she cut the front of my hair above my eyebrow when I had asked for it at around the level of my mouth. I now have a fringe which is too short to style and frizzes up at every opportunity.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 10/08/2021 21:26

It just all takes too long and I get fidgety.

Newcoffee · 10/08/2021 21:34

So glad am not the only one!too much poncing around and being trendy, which is daunting and the price! £45! For a junior tomprat about for half an hour talking nonsense. Dd wanted to go to the barbers as she is now a boy, sigh. But 20 mins later she has a really snappy short cut and it cost..£10! May become gender fluid myself!

Cakemonger · 10/08/2021 21:36

I also dislike it, but did miss looking half decent during lockdown. I have accepted I am socially awkward and cannot do chit chat, that it's ok not to talk much, and that it's worth putting more makeup on than usual on the day to look good in the mirror. Always feel a bit silly for doing this but I leave feeling soooo much better about myself.
