Anyone else really dislike going to the hairdresser?

I feel like I must be in some kind of minority because most people I know see it as a treat and enjoy it, but I've always hated going. I've been to numerous different hairdressers and just can't seem to find one that cuts my hair properly. I now colour it myself at home so that's half the battle, but still find it difficult to go. Anyone else avoid the hairdresser unless they absolutely have to go?

I think my dislike comes from the fact I have curly hair that a lot of stylists have found hard to manage. I also think I may be on the autism spectrum like another poster mentioned. One of my family members has an amazing mobile hairdresser, so I think that may he the way to go and it wouldn't feel half as overwhelming

Ah I see. You need to find a salon which specialises in, or at least is capable of working with, curly hair. It's a whole separate skill set and different products, techniques etc.

The ASD thing ... Think of it like going out for a cocktail. You need to know what atmosphere you want, and what drink you want. You can't ask for a fruity cocktail when you want a strawberry daiquiri, you have to be specific. You also don't have to talk to the barman while he's mixing up your drink Wink

I used to hate it but at the age of 45, I found a hairdresser who not only gets my hair but also doesn't mind that I take a book and read while he does his thing. He makes me a coffee and I put my feet up and have a quiet read. I have a full time job, a mostly absent husband and I'm a mum to two boys, one who has SEN so I relish the time to myself. Keep looking, I'm so pleased I finally found one.

coconuttree · 10/08/2021 23:27

I only have my hair cut when it s absolutely necessary. I hate it when a hairdresser ask me how I would like to have my haircut.

God yes, it’s utter torture. I’d rather go to the dentist or have a smear.

I have curly hair and they never know how to cut it. There’s probably not a lot of intervention that could make my hair look half-decent, but still. I refuse to go now.

Timeisavirtue · 10/08/2021 23:31

Me,....I haven’t had my hair cut for 6 years, it just grates on me, my local hairdresser is really good she just talks to much and stops like 100 times which means it takes longer. I just wanna go in, get my hair cut and leave.....

seasonalremarks · 10/08/2021 23:37

Hate it and haven't been for years. I've yet to meet a hairdresser who doesn't give off bitchy vibes and makes me hate myself

I sort of know what you mean. HahaGrin

Germolenequeen · 10/08/2021 23:37

Hate it so I cut my own hair - chin length bob - get more compliments than when I went to hair dresser & people very surprised that I did it myself.
Do like having a professional "hair do" though when going to a function ( those were the days 😥)

SheisMammyof2 · 10/08/2021 23:43

I hate everything about it, the awful sinks that hurt my neck and shoulders, trying to explain what I want, how I look in the mirror with my wet head, the small talk, the blow drying which does nothing for my hair, and then having to lie when they ask me if I like it, when I just want to cry cause it's awful, and then having to pay for the whole terrible experience!! So I now cut my own hair using YouTube tutorials and I've never been happier with it.

MeanderingGently · 10/08/2021 23:44

I hate it. I could never find a hairdresser who would cut it exactly as I wanted. Often they didn't understand my (very odd) hair despite my telling them....and then say, Oh yes, I see....when it went wrong.

I hate the hair wash, hate the chairs, hate the mirrors which make me look even more weird, can't stand the chit-chat which I can't hear anyway because there's a hair dryer buzzing in my ear.

Eventually I watched a lot of YouTube videos on hair cutting and experimented doing it myself. Yes, even the back....it is possible. Good to practice, any mistake and it always grows back again.

These days I wash, cut, curl and colour my own hair. It was brilliant during the lockdowns because I don't rely on any hairdresser to do my hair and keep a stock of hair colour in the cupboard. And I save so much money....

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 10/08/2021 23:49

I forced myself to go yesterday. I'm always glad when I have (I have thin, poker straight hair that really needs a decent cut to give it life) but I always feel like I have to apologise for the state of my hair and how little attention I give it. It makes me feel ashamed! The whole process is excruciating- yesterday they asked me 'how do you want your hair dried?' and I was completely stumped. I sat there with an idiotic look thinking, errrr, 'with a hairdryer?'. I always feel out of my depth, and don't find it relaxing to have people they don't know touching me (also hate massages).

NessieMcNessface · 10/08/2021 23:54

I detest it! My scalp is really sensitive and having the foils removed feels like I’m having my hair ripped out. Having the tint put on my roots is also a nightmare as my scalp starts to itch uncontrollably a few minutes after application. I do it because I know I look better once it’s all done, but as someone else said, I’d genuinely rather have a trip to the dentist.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/08/2021 23:56

yes so I stopped about 20 years ago.
I had a friend coming to my house for a while (say every 10m or so) but when I was pg with DS4 and desperately needed a haircut I had headlice (thanks kids).
so DH trimmed my hair and after that I never bothered to go again, I started cutting my own hair instead!

it's been about 14 years & no regrets.
I do a great job and people always ask me where I have my hair cut - their jaws hit the floor when I tell them I do it myself.
I also cut DD's hair. And DH does the boys'.
It all came very handy since last March

notangelinajolie · 11/08/2021 00:17

It's not the cut or my lovely hairdresser that I dislike. It's the NOISE. Hairdryers, music, people talking over music, people talking over the hairdryer, tv on in the corner, phone ringing - it's just relentless and not a relaxing place to be. I feel exhausted after my monthly roots and trim. My lovely hairdresser is genuinely sympathetic and she hates the noise too. Her chair is in the quietest spot furthest from the noise as she can get. She doesn't ask me stupid questions about where I'm going on holiday. in fact she doesn't say much at all. We do talk when we can hear each other speak but generally, like old friends we have a mutual silence between us. Booking the first appointment of the day before the masses arrive helps.

TheBullfinch · 11/08/2021 01:08

Me.

Hate it. I'm always too hot, cant stand the inane whitterings going on around me, dont like being touched and the coffee's crap.

It really bothers me that only half the spotlights are ever working and the chairs are too close to each other. They always comb my wet hair from root to tips despite me warning them that it tangles and I hate the fact that they wash my hair while wearing latex gloves, so it drags and pulls my hair.

I hate how they blow dry the front off my face giving me a five head instead of a forehead and i hate how they manage to wash all my make up off too.

God, i could go on for hours.

This is a good chain salon btw.

Themeparklover · 11/08/2021 01:33

Me! I have a condition called hair grooming syncope, where when someone else brushes my hair excessively, straightens, curls etc. I faint and occasionally seizure.. oddly anyone I'm comfortable with i.e., grandma I don't pass out but anyone new it's over stimulating and makes me feel light headed and I pass out, I haven't been to a hairdressers in at least 3/4 years now and always struggle, it often also happens with low bloodsugar

Themeparklover · 11/08/2021 01:36

syncopse*

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 11/08/2021 01:41

Hate it. Hate the chat, hate someone in my space, hate the smells, hate the chairs, find the wee sinks really painful (turns out my neck is wonky & it's not just me being "difficult")
Havent been to hairdresser in about 20 years Grin

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 11/08/2021 01:59

I hate it too, so boring and I don't want to make small talk. I think hairdressers should have a quiet chair, I would happily pay extra!

Kanaloa · 11/08/2021 02:05

I hate it. I never ever come out of the hairdressers looking better than when I went in. Also, a large proportion of hairdressers seem incapable of understanding what ‘just a tiny bit off the ends’ means. You might as well say scalp me mate, that’ll do fine.

I think it’s especially awkward because if you say you don’t like it/it wasn’t what you asked for they’ll attempt to fix it but it’s often one of those that you just want to leave once the mistake is made because you no longer trust that hairdresser to fix the problem.

Kanaloa · 11/08/2021 02:07

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1

Some hairdressers do this! You book the ‘quiet chair’ when you book your haircut and they will only speak to you about your hair/to ask relevant questions.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 11/08/2021 02:37

Oh wow really Kanaloa? I don't think that has made it to Oz yet, I will have to suggest it to my hairdresser mate!

3ormorecharacters · 11/08/2021 02:58

Me, I hate it. I find it really hard and stressful to explain what I want then watch as they do it wrong but don't feel I can say anything. I never want it blow dried or styled (I always wash my hair when I get home anyway and never blow dry it as it gets frizzy). I always explain this beforehand but they end up doing it anyway.

Plus the lighting is always horrible and I look so horrible with my hair wet and scraped back, but there's nowhere to look other than your own reflection. So depressing!

mumsymum25 · 11/08/2021 02:58

I love getting a haircut. It just relaxes me. I have had bad experiences in the past where the hairdresser has taken the piss and slaughtered my hair. My most recent haircut a couple of months back was one of them, but it hasn't made me dislike them. Everyone is different though. I know some women who absolutely hate going to the hairdressers, but on the other hand women who absolutely love it. Both perfectly normal feelings.

Kinsters · 11/08/2021 03:12

I used to hate it but now I've found a hairdresser who cuts my hair how I like it and she's also a genuinely lovely person and I enjoy chatting to her.

avamiah · 11/08/2021 04:20

I’m 48 and live in London and to be totally honest I really don’t like going to the hair salon but have to as I’m no good at colouring my own hair or cutting it.
In my opinion , depending on where you go it’s just so fake and all about tips and Instagram and I can’t be doing with all the “small talk”.

Some of these hairdressers think they are doing you a favour by seeing you, it’s just ridiculous.
