UN climate change report

Climate change is already massive, unstoppable and hugely destructive.

We have to reduce the number of children we are having, reduce the amount of meat fish and dairy we eat, stop driving cars so unnecessarily, stop burning fossil fuel, convert to using renewable energy, stop sending rubbish to landfill, reduce reuse and recycle.

Otherwise the human race is finished. Its as simple as that.

Feel great now,cheers.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/08/2021 17:20

One thing I have never understood is why car sharing schemes haven't taken off outside cities.

We should have been designing and building for climate change for years, then the transition would be a lot easier.

gardeninggirl68 · 09/08/2021 17:29

we've been doing most of that for years though..

clearly not working

gardeninggirl68 · 09/08/2021 17:30

why do you say the human race is finished??

No we haven't, look at the roads right now, chock a block with cars - most of them should not be there. Look at the supermarket shelves - full of meat and fish. We should be relying on low environmental impact alternatives.

Because we are heading towards making the planet uninhabitable
OP posts:
Hekatestorch · 09/08/2021 17:35

How are we deciding what cars should be 'there'?

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/08/2021 17:35

At least it’s headline news. We need to step up and actually do something now

gardeninggirl68 · 09/08/2021 17:35

people have been steadily going vegan for some time now....people are more mindful of vehicle usage....people car share/ use park and ride, cycle

we've been shifting for years

gardeninggirl68 · 09/08/2021 17:37

Because we are heading towards making the planet uninhabitable

right. so not just for the human race then? you specifically said 'human race'

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 17:37

Well they’re finally admitting that climate change is inevitable and cannot be reversed. So tired of the earlier versions insisting we have to act now or.....

Carbon emissions are a pollution problem anyway, so addressing that is good anyway. Always in favour of reducing pollution and going green.

But the whole idea that carbon causes all climate change and their little charts dating from 1850 and 1950 trying to show we are all doomed is just scare mongering. The planet had higher CO2 and warmer climate in the Bronze Age thousands of years ago. And yes the climate changed. And yes we survived with next to no technology and only feet and horses to flee rising sea levels.

We also survived multiple Ice Ages and interglacial periods where there were no ice cars during our 3million years as a species.

Humans will continue survive climate change.

Migrations in history often occurred due to climate change....migration is a constant of humanity, the fact we will have climate change refugees and nations will change is yawningly obvious.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 17:38

*no ice caps.

wonderstuff · 09/08/2021 17:40

But while I will do all I can, others won't and governments must take the lead. I live in a 4 year old house that has gas central heating, its absolutely mad, recently a development in my village was turned down at planning, they revised the application with lots of eco friendly measures including ground source heating, it can be done but developers need to be forced.

I work in a school building that hasn't been updated since the 1970s, single glazed windows and no insulation, there must be hundreds of these buildings in the public sector, each government kicking the can down the road and not updating.

The energies that have gone into covid need to be directed at carbon, it's an urgent issue, but government aren't seeing it.

Basic easy things like banning peat in compost and stopping burning moorland aren't even happening.

As individuals we're quite limited.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 17:40

Because we are heading towards making the planet uninhabitable

Stop the scare mongering. There are climate change winners and losers among species, but humans aren’t in any real danger of extinction.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/08/2021 17:41

It’s terrible.

And the day this comes out the government are trying to stop wfh in the civil service getting yet more people commuting, a few days after Shapps was begging people to fly away on holiday and the PM’s COP26 rep admitting electric cars are a faff, suggesting people stop rinsing dishes and saying the government is encouraging personal responsibility and won’t be telling anyone what to do etc etc etc

It’s a joke.

54321nought · 09/08/2021 17:42

And yes the climate changed. And yes we survived with next to no technology and only feet and horses to flee rising sea levels.

What is the point of posts like this.

No, the majority of civilisations did not survive, and that is going to be a walk in the park compared to what is coming.

So what if the climate has changed in the past? There are times when CO2 has been much higher, but not times when humans did or could have lived here.

This is climate change on a different scale, and coming from us

OP posts:
FedNlanders · 09/08/2021 17:42

I think anyone that does not think it's a huge issue is in denial. Pure and simple.

wonderstuff · 09/08/2021 17:44

As for cars, all the improvements in engine tech have been wiped out by increased SUV purchases. We need to go back to escalating fuel tax and tax heavily for high emission vehicles, people will then start making better choices.

54321nought · 09/08/2021 17:44

firstly, yes we are - stop minimising-, and secondly, even if humans survive as a species, you are looking at total collapse of civilisation as we know it, but you are right, there is a reasonable chance of 0.1-0.5% of the population surviving that.
OP posts:
wonderstuff · 09/08/2021 17:47

@PlanDeRaccordement as a species we may well survive, but as a species our numbers have dropped significantly in the past in response to climate changes. Migration is already a contentious issue in this country, we can expect an awful lot more if half the planet becomes uninhabitable.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 17:49

No it wasn’t a “walk in the park” then compared to what will be. And humans very much WERE alive then. That’s just panicking unnecessarily. And the point of my posts is to give some much needed historical perspective that the reports severely lack by only using modern day records.

And there is a BIG difference between nations or empires collapsing and the extinction of all human life which you are saying would happen.

BeetleyCarapace · 09/08/2021 17:49

A massive win on this would be the emancipation of women in the developing world. Access to education and reproductive health. It's massive.

LoveFall · 09/08/2021 17:49

Thank you for the repeat of that great news. Sadly, I already do most of those things and have done for decades.

Feeling helpless much?

adawong · 09/08/2021 17:49

We have been hearing this for the last 30 years from the same people with the same agendas.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 17:52

Sorry but that is a fake statistic. And even when civilisations collapse due to climate change, it sets humanity back a few steps, but it’s never been post apocalyptic back to the Stone Age or zombie film levels. Even the European dark ages after Roman Empire collapsed were not that bad. Britain post British Empire,,,can you say its terrible compared to its Victorian hey day? Truly things are more complex than you think.
