UN climate change report

Climate change is already massive, unstoppable and hugely destructive.

We have to reduce the number of children we are having, reduce the amount of meat fish and dairy we eat, stop driving cars so unnecessarily, stop burning fossil fuel, convert to using renewable energy, stop sending rubbish to landfill, reduce reuse and recycle.

Otherwise the human race is finished. Its as simple as that.

Oh and by the way OP and other posters.

If you don't like the Climate mess we are in

STOP VOTING BLOODY TORY>=

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/08/2021 19:56

Why can’t people just support others to do as much as possible rather than coming on and criticising people who want to raise awareness and make changes. Surely if you do lots already you should be pleased when others want to.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 20:08

@rottd

When climate change worsens, that booming young population is going to head north for Europe, causing chaos.

Tbf we probably need immigration in the west

More likely Northern Russia, Canada Also south towards Antarctica, so southern Africa, southern S.America

Most of Northern Europe is still sinking as it has been since the Ice Age ended. U.K. used to be connected to France...and Ireland to Britain. It will just keep shrinking.

beigebrownblue · 09/08/2021 20:11

Just cut the 'we' talk.

It's pathetic.

You created shed loads of CO2 emissions through your own foreign holidays fifty times a year etc.

Then own it.

Do a CO2 audit for yourself.

But don't pretend others are equally responsible.

And if you are lost in a middle or upper class guilt trip own that too.

And give your money away to a climate heating initiative.

I'm not being guilt tripped by it. I did ok and so did my family. We don't waste anything, we don't create unnecessary CO2 emissions.

So instead of lying and guilt tripping others lets get real for once.

A bit late in coming for those waking up to this.

Not unreasonable to be disgusted at that.

And then they go around talking about 'we'.

there is no 'we' there is only I and you until there is affinity.

OliverBabish · 09/08/2021 20:13

No one I know cares. It’s very sad.

May I take this opportunity to say how good I’ve found Olio for sharing food in the community that would otherwise be wasted? Doing small things like that make me feel a little less hopeless.

54321nought · 09/08/2021 20:13

Like it or not smart phones or computers are fairly essential to modern life

That's true, but annual upgrades are no necessary. Phone and computer can be kept for years, and not only that, they can be recycled when they are obsolete, and replaced with new phones and computers with ethically sourced components

'WE' don't have a car.

'We' have never owned a car.

'We' have engaged and worked for environmental organisations campaigning for greater awareness and action for actually myself fourty five years now.

'We' garden.

'We' walk mostly everywhere.

'We' eat mostly vegetarian and don't waste food.

I suggest you look in the mirror OP and stop talking bullshit.

sorry, can you please explain what this post means, it doesn't make any sense to me

Not convinced on meat thing yet , what happens to the animals do we just cull them and not eat them, do we have enough land around the world to grow all the crops we would need if no body ate any meat at all , in all countries where climate makes hard for things to grow
Haven't humans been eating animals for hundreds and hundreds of years

It takes far less land to grow crops for human consumption than it does to grow crops for animal consumption, then feed those animals to humans

Op where did covid massively reduce pollution and the birth rate ? All over the world or uk or select countries
We as a small island make hardly any difference on our own.
I drive to work don't cycle as its dangerous and who wants to sit in wet sweaty clothes all day

DontDoThatGeorge · 09/08/2021 20:18

It's probably about time. As a species we are outrageously successful, but we've overdone it. Off we pop.

There's that 'we' again.

Lovely.

No, 'we' haven't overdone anything.

SOME OF HUMANITY HAVE. And it is them that needs to change.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/08/2021 20:24

It’s not hopeless! There is always hope. That’s why I don’t accept the we are doomed, humanity is going to die part of the climate change agenda.

It’s not denial to fully agree climate change exists, is unstoppable and a problem but to not agree we are all doomed. I do also my part in having a low footprint. Heck, I had to recharge my pad I do that by cycling on a stationary bike to charge my electronics. My own hamster wheel so I’m not using nonrenewabke energy to post here.

May I suggest a book
1177 BC the Year Civilisation Collapsed by Dr Cline.

Many parallels between then and now. Climate change causing refugee Sea Peoples which then caused chaos in the Mediterranean civilisations. But of course, we survived and civilisation continued.

3luckystars · 09/08/2021 20:24

I think the corona virus changed a lot of people’s thinking, definitely mine anyway. It was the first time that we were relying on others doing the right thing for our safety. Most people were lovely and not selfish, so I have high hopes for a big change in people’s behaviours towards the environment in the next few years.

worriedatthemoment · 09/08/2021 20:26

@54321nought so what about the animals do we kill them all so we don't have to feed them and loose those as a species as we are more important
Me not driving here ans there makes zero impact overall unless the world does it
Also people say stop buying from countries , people then starve of jobs go ao thats another vicious cycle
We have no records from 100 of years ago and today its august and 15 degrees !!
Maybe its mother natures way ?
Im all for recycling and being careful but I am also not silly enough to think that will change the world

Tuscancat · 09/08/2021 20:30

Well the best way to win people over isn't by knocking them out. If that has been your approach @beigebrownblue I'm not surprised you haven't been as successful as you would like.
Many people are making a difference and that movement is growing? Will it be enough? I think it could be, but people must be on board - and no one wants to climb in a boat with people who attack or belittle them.

LoveFall · 09/08/2021 20:42

This is a question I have been wondering about. If everyone in the world becomes vegan, and we no linger have cows, sheep, pigs and chickens, how will be grow organic plant based food?

Will all those animals become extinct?

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 09/08/2021 20:42

The pandemic and the handling of it has proved how complex all this is.
Flying: terrible for the environment but we're now being actively encouraged to do it to protect jobs and economy.
Eating out: is unnecessary and there is a lot of waste. We could all eat and drink at home, but, jobs and economy.
Meat: how to protect the topsoil if there are no grazing animals? How many vegan foods are ultra processed with all the environmental disadvantage that entails?
High Street shopping: we're being actively encouraged to get out and shop to boost the economy and protect jobs (I'm beginning to see a pattern here) yet we know that consuming less is a good way to protect the planet.
Those terrible scroungers relying on handouts because they have no vehicle to get them to work (the only jobs available are miles away and public transport is crap)
Population: yes, I think the world is overpopulated, yet as fertility rates are falling in developed countries, there are concerns about who will look after and pay the taxes to fund an ageing and ailing population?

And so on, and on. So many compromises need to be made. I have no idea what the answer is.
Quite honestly I believe that over time we won't be able to maintain the human population, a lot will die off, the planet will recover and those of us left will be forced into a more natural way of living.

beigebrownblue · 09/08/2021 20:42

Actually Tuscancat I feel those of us who have been in this movement for a very long time have a perfect right to point out that talkng in terms of 'we' is not acceptable.

Don't do the blame shifting thing thanks.

Not my sole responsiblity as an individual (and not Greta Thurnberg's either_ for climate heating.

You work on 'getting people on board' if you haven't been on 'board' s the OP apparently hasn't either for the past twenty years, then you have got a lot of work and catching up to do.

Please get on with it. And stop blaming others for what you haven't been doing.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/08/2021 20:44

Beigebrownblue being aggressive and rude doesn’t help. You’re alienating those who actually care and want to help.

3luckystars · 09/08/2021 20:45

I totally agree. I admit to being a bit stupid (so please forgive me for not realising something that was so obvious to everyone else) but I read a post here the other day criticising people for using balloons, until that minute it did not occur to me that buying balloons was contributing, but after reading that I will never buy another balloon again.
Things are getting through.

I’m starting to realise that every single thing I do is having an impact on the environment. I’m learning, and learning much quicker recently, but some people are not just purposely doing damage, they just really need things explained to them.

54321nought · 09/08/2021 20:48
