@HildaTablet it wasn’t recently! I used to be exciting...

DoctorTwo · 26/08/2021 13:44

Thanks for the birthday wishes. In car news, well, the mechanic diagnosed a bad starter motor and changed it, but that didn't fix the problem. He's advised me it's an electrical fault that could cost more than the car is worth to diagnose and repair, so I have to look for a new one. Well, second hand. Can't afford new.

MissConductUS · 26/08/2021 14:11

Happy belated birthday @DoctorTwo!

Any word on the car? I'm surprised you got a mechanic to come to you. Here they'd make you tow it in.

Now at hotel in Penzance, there was no traffic on the route Shock so got there early and had an ice cream, now checked in. Lovely journey down via Dartmoor, with sheep on the road, very pretty cottages, country roads and the sea. Now in our room and ds has tipping point on.

We have a new plan for parking tomorrow for helicopter as got a space at a really close long term car park so will keep it there and get a taxi to heliport. I have always wanted to go on a helicopter too so was very happy when ds and dd were really excited. Its must have been exciting co piloting one Helena.

Hope you continue to have a nice holiday SJane Feeling very lucky with the weather, only sunny days so far, not massively hot, in low 20s but thats fine for us. Have meal here tonight then breakfast tomorrow helicopter to Tresco over to B&B then tropical garden which has red squirrels, spa then the mens gig race at 7pm. Hope will have wifi there, in theory we do but never know on islands. Following day we have kayaking round islands, jet boat to St Marys and fly back on small plane to Lands End which ds wanted then on to the castle ds likes that we are staying after that. Luckily the castle say we can let ourselves in as they know us from last year.

Hope everyone has a good Bank Holiday weekend.

Silkiescatz · 26/08/2021 16:59

So sorry to hear about your Dad SJane I hope things go as well as they can there and he is well looked after.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 26/08/2021 19:10

I handed in my walking stick and was discharged from physio, which was nice. Got my hair cut, ran DSIL into work, cooked far too many sauté potatoes for dinner.

Gingerwarthog · 26/08/2021 19:33

Love the sound of your adventures Silkie.
Hit the beach today and did some body boarding. Off to friend's for catch up
and wine.

DoctorTwo · 26/08/2021 19:56

@MissConductUS it's looking very much like I need to change my car. Bit of a bugger but hey ho, there's loads worse off than me. It's going to have to be cheap as I don't have much money.

MissConductUS · 26/08/2021 20:04

I see our earlier posts crossed, @DoctorTwo. Sorry to hear about your ride. Car prices are up so much it might be more economical to repair your old ride, depending on what's wrong.

Congrats on hanging up your walking stick, Disgrace. What are you having with the potatoes? I think pasta and meatballs (from Uncle G's) is on the menu for us tonight.

Sorry about car. They are so expensive! @DoctorTwo

Had a lovely day taking baby and child I have for respite care out shopping then lunch.

IWanderedLonely · 26/08/2021 21:31

I've just eaten a vanilla slice which was reduced in Morrisons. My love of a bargain is one of the reasons why I can't sem to lose weight.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/08/2021 21:46

Just back from my very last parent's evening (election of representatives for different panels, schedule for exams, deadlines to keep etc).
And of course it rained.
From tomorrow morning onwards I will get up earlier to feed NDN cats (and of course Erich and Erna) Smile

Silkiescatz · 26/08/2021 23:00

Dimensions for hand luggage on helicopter are 30x15x15cms and electronic devices must be in hand luggage. Thought that meant no ipads and ds was Sad but just realised at an angle they fit. Smile

Champagneforeveryone · 26/08/2021 23:07

I had sea salt and balsamic vinegar veg crisps earlier and they were amazing. I have just scurried in the door to check my hiding place has not been rumble while I was at work and I'm pleased to announce that all is well.

I have of course sampled a few more, just to make sure their quality has been maintained during my absence Wink

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 27/08/2021 07:14

champagne Quality control is essential!

I am slightly happy to say that DCat no1 (old and very shy) joined DCat No2 and me in the kitchen, she remembered me. But obviously only because of her breakfast.
Morose pidgeon and mate eyed me from the gutter, while I put their food out.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 27/08/2021 07:43

We had pork chops grilled with a bit of Cajun seasoning and petit pois.

Nydj · 27/08/2021 11:56

Been away from the thread for a couple of days so a very belated happy birthday @DoctorTwo. I am an oddball in many ways but the relevant one on this is that I like doing nothing and having uneventful birthdays - as long as there is cake, of course.
@Silkiescatz, your holiday sounds amazing - I hope the helicopter and plane rides, water activities and castle stay are all wonderful!.
@SJaneS49, I’m sorry about your dad, I hope he is being well cared for.
How are you and your DH finding being empty nesters, @MissConductUS? It must take some getting used to but, hopefully, after a bit you will find some positives.
I have been on my walk and cleaned 4 out of the 6 packs of mushrooms that we have because I kept forgetting that we had unused mushrooms in the fridge for two weeks in a row - oops!

MissConductUS · 27/08/2021 14:55

Welcome back, @Nydj. We are getting used to being empty nesters, and there are some small positives. We had a tex/mex takeaway last night and it was far less expensive than usual. I don't have to do a load of laundry every night. DS had form for tidying his room by throwing random articles of clothing in the washing machine, even when they really didn't need washing. The cats miss him too. They seem more stressed when we get home now that they're home alone all day. I've also seen Dboycat going into DS's room as if he's looking for him.

The belt came off the flywheel on our stationary bike last night, so it is out of action. DH was able to disassemble the bike enough to determine what had happened, but couldn't get the belt back on the flywheel. I emailed the company with a picture and they have emailed back with some information on how to do it. I'm not optimistic that we'll be able to fix it.

We only paid about $300 for the bike back in January, so if we have to replace it it's not a huge loss. This time we'd buy something better, ideally with a service plan available. On the bright side, I was able to get an extra 40 minutes of sleep this morning since the bike was broken.

Listening to someone on a podcast telling me that Canadians and Americans pronounce 'sorry' differently. Is that true, @MissConductUS ? I have to admit I can't really hear the difference.

Accents are fascinating. Obvs I assume that I don't have one and everyone else does. I suspect this isn't the case. Grin

MissConductUS · 27/08/2021 16:25

@Squirrel26, I'm not aware of any difference in how Americans and Canadians pronounce "sorry", but there are regional accents in both countries where any difference might be more pronounced.

I''ve been watching so much British television programming in the last few years that I can assure you, you do have an accent. Grin

So do I, for that matter.

I am working overtime again and have just been monumentally stitched up. There are not enough posh vegetable crisps in the world to make the situation any better.

Gingerwarthog · 27/08/2021 17:16

DH's DM and DF are coming to stay for a few days and as we have not seen them for a long time it has been the full works today in terms of cleaning and shopping.
DF in law loves nuts and books about Science so have ended up buying a book for him called Entangled Lives (about funghi I kid you not). The man in Waterstones waxed lyrical about it and it kind of looks interesting.
Spare room looks like we are running an Air B and B.
DH is going to make Sachetorte Smile

HelenaJustina · 27/08/2021 17:39

I’ve had a lovely day with the DC meeting you with my DS-in-law and her two DC.

Got DC1 to write me a to-do list while we were driving there, I just brained dumped it all onto paper. I feel better and have ticked off 5 things since we got home.

Silkiescatz · 27/08/2021 18:09
