What would you eat for dinner if you had a rare night home alone?

DH is out tomorrow which is a rarity and I'm really looking forward to having a night in to myself, chilling out and watching what I want on TV. I'll need dinner and can't decide what to have. Takeaway is an option, cooking is an option but nothing too time consuming as I'll have beem t work all day.

What would you make? Please inspire me!

Dead easy meal (and cooked to my own taste):
30 day aged fillet steak from Sainsbos, with their frozen breadcrumbed onion rings. Takes 15 minutes to cook (less oven warming time - I like my steak pan-fried), and delicious. If you want to add in chips, go for the chunky ones (fresh range)!
I also add whole grain mustard (plus ketchup if having chips) and a glass of wine. Smile

Cheese and crackers and Wine

I always make mushroom risotto or mushroom tagliatelle, DH hates mushrooms and I love them. He'll tolerate them chopped up in a curry etc but nothing that is purely mushroom flavoured , so I indulge when I'm just cooking for me. He's generally not fussy at all so I can't begrudge him pretty much the only thing he doesn't like to eat. If we make home made pizza I always top mine with a variety of mushrooms 😋

I wouldn’t make anything cause it eats into the time. Sushi. Lots of it, especially spicy California dragon roll. And some nice wine too.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/08/2021 23:30

My DP doesn’t eat fish, so I get the M&S Gastropub fish, chips, and mushy peas. He used to go away with work a lot pre-Covid, and I would always have it on the first night, eaten on my lap in the living room. Tiny bit of fish left to cool and saved for the cat too.

waltzingparrot · 05/08/2021 23:31

An M&S ready meal for me please!

AliMonkey · 05/08/2021 23:33

Something DH won’t eat so either liver or something veggie eg veg crumble or lemon/mushroom pasta

MintyCedric · 05/08/2021 23:35

@SkankingMopoke

I'd have a batch of Yorkshire puddings (makes about 12 small ones) with homemade onion gravy and English mustard. Or possibly macaroni cheese.

Both choices are highly nutritious and balanced meals Grin

May I suggest filling your yorkies with the macaroni cheese...maybe topping with extra cheese and browning the top.
Egghead68 · 05/08/2021 23:43

Ben and Jerry’s Half-Baked.
Punnet of cherries.

Ruthietuthie · 05/08/2021 23:45

I'm with @Chunkymenrock, spaghetti carbonara for me.

bluechameleon · 05/08/2021 23:46

Thai or Japanese takeaway, because DH doesn't like these so much. Or a nice ready meal from M&S or Waitrose.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/08/2021 23:48

Baked sweet potato with tuna mayo, lashings of cheese, salad, cherry tomatoes and hummus. It is fucking amazing.

Or oatcakes and cheese.

Or chips and cheese delivered to the door.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 05/08/2021 23:49

I’m in the “nothing” camp.
When there’s no one in the house it’s such a relief not to think about what to cook, what food we have left, what needs to be eaten.

Sod it all. I’m not wasting time any more time on cooking when no ones in.

ScouseQueen · 05/08/2021 23:55

Fried egg sandwich, massive bar of chocolate. Alternatives would be take away or nice ready meal if I could be bothered to get one.

elizabethdraper · 05/08/2021 23:59

Beans on toast with grated cheese

a full run of beans

redfairy · 06/08/2021 00:38

open a tin of chilli, nuke for 3 minutes then cover with tortilla chips and grated cheese. grill. Mwa!

Hen2018 · 06/08/2021 00:44

I always cook a huge bowl of mussels and buy some posh, herby pretentious bread!

Bouledeneige · 06/08/2021 00:49

I'm gone alone most nights. Divorced and 2 DC at uni. I eat 'massive' salads, chicken, fish and prawns with veg.

Mockolate · 06/08/2021 00:51

I'd get an Indian takeaway Smile

CorianderBee · 06/08/2021 01:02

I always spend ages trying to choose and then end up having something like dippy eggs or beans 😂

Twillow · 06/08/2021 01:07

@DisgruntledPelican

Cheese and bread/biscuits. At least three different cheeses and some nice sourdough or oatcakes/crackers. Fig chutney and chilli jam.
This with bells on. If I felt like cooking, a decent steak with peppercorn sauce, or a lean pork chop with apples cream and cider thrown in.
MouseholeCat · 06/08/2021 01:14

Sardines or mackeral. My husband hates smelly fish and I need time to air out the house after cooking it.

SkiingIsHeaven · 06/08/2021 01:24

Fillet steak with pepper sauce. Fried mushrooms, tender stem broccoli and a baked potato.

My idea of heaven in a plate.

mathanxiety · 06/08/2021 01:34

Sardines with pasta, or tuna salad on toast.

The DDs hate both.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 06/08/2021 20:30

@Lolatt

A tapas meal to pick from while engrossed in a good drama and wine 🍷

Followed by a few Kir Royals.

Oh yes, along with my cheese and wine, I'll be stuck in to some godawful shite like Virgin River or Outer Banks and I won't have to tolerate* the constant "for fuck's sake, I've seen it all now" coming from the cheap seats.

*I don't tolerate them and end up getting a right cob on with him so best to watch alone Grin
