Liz Jones' ex husband, Nirwal Dhaliwal, writes excoriating account of marriage to Liz Jones

Liz Jones's ex wrote a pulverising article about their marriage yesterday.

I couldn't blame him really, as she writes about him nearly every week in really dismissive terms, and there are always 2 sides to a story.
She always describes lavishing him with expensive gifts and how rotten, lazy and ungrateful he was, but he actually walked away with no money at all - to his credit as at that time she was very well paid.

He writes: My ex is the newspaper columnist Liz Jones who, during our time together, turned her one-sided take on our relationship into a lucrative industry, churning out thousands of articles. I still appear in her work now, despite not speaking to her in 12 years. I came to live in a gilded Islington cage, lavished with unrequested gifts, and holidays as Liz spent some of the fortune she made from writing about me – mostly derisively – no doubt in the hope that I wouldn’t leave.
Our marriage was doomed from our wedding day: an occasion I felt swindled into, having never proposed. She arranged it without my knowledge; I found out when I discovered a receipt for the country estate. Confronted with it, she declared she’d already told the world in her column – which I no longer read – and would look a fool. She then broke down in tears, robbing me of my anger as I comforted her and agreed.
Having been depicted as little more than a gigolo, I forwent a small fortune that would have given me stability, and have lived a financially precarious life since. Naively, I had hoped she would stop pouring scorn on me in print, but she has continued to do so, banking cheque after cheque in the process.

Her writing, of course, never gave any sense of my vulnerability. The working-class product of an immigrant home wracked by alcoholism, violence and insolvency, I was, in my 20s, always going to fall under the spell of a wealthy older woman who promised me a lifestyle and security that I’d never imagined for myself'.

Just goes to show that there are always 2 sides to every story, and while Jones always portrays herself as a victim, the truth is more nuanced.

I stopped reading her column years ago, it doesn't sound like much has changed. I always liked her kindness to animals so hope the tails on here aren't accurate.

LJ's kindness to animals is all part of the persona she has created, LJ uses this shtick as much as she can, it doesn't hold up when scrutinised. I am not saying LJ is deliberately cruel but she collects animals and they are a means to an end.

The horse that died's previous owner got a PCC upheld soHmm

Animal hoarder. This is usually misplaced 'kindness' and uses animals to fill the gap that results from being unable to interact in an emotionally satisfactory way with other people. It's need. It's not a good solution to solving emotional problems for anyone, or any creature, involved.

@JoanOgden

I'm sure I read basically this piece by Nirpal Dhaliwal about 15 years ago. They both need to get over themselves.
Yes he’s been flogging this narrative to death for a very long time now! Liz J is a fruit loop, true, but he is a talent-free whinger and sponger. At least LJ is entertaining and readable, nuts as she is.

She is terrible with animals. Her dogs aren’t housetrained and pee everywhere, even when she takes them to restaurants. One of them also killed one of her cats. (This is all from her own columns).
She seems to be a bit of a fantasist. I get the impression a lot of what she writes is made up, and she contradicts herself all the time.
I actually read her latest book (8 1/2 stone) when it came out on kindle last year. It is honestly one of the most terrible things I’ve ever read. Fattist, ableist, racist, and just generally hateful. There’s no wit and the writing is awful. Plus it’s fairly obvious no editor ever went near it, it’s full of typos and inconsistencies. (It’s a very small publisher, I suspect it was effectively self-published). The main character’s husband is also clearly based on Nirpal, who she’s decided to write as a closeted gay man. I suppose she thinks that is her revenge for him being (in real life) such a womaniser.

I’ve always thought that they sounded as bad as one another. At least when they were together they weren’t inflicting themselves on anybody else.

Ive read her stuff for years and listen to the podcast. You need to 'get' her I think, she is very tongue in cheek

No I think we “get” her alright. You sound like you think we’ve all misunderstood her and she isn’t responsible for all that she does/writes. Being “tongue in cheek” is fine if you’re not writing about people you’re naming! It’s never ok to write horrible things about your Husband, work colleagues, neighbour’s, mother, sister, brother etc etc etc.

MuddyStiletto · 04/08/2021 09:19

She comes across a a spoilt, self absorbed snob who has no connection with reality

Liz Jones replies today. The slanging match continues.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 06/09/2021 09:40

Yeah, fairly predictable replies. I still wonder if they are in on together and it's how they make money.

Albeit he can drop the victim act. Having said that she's no better.
