Where's somewhere you've visited but wouldn't want to go back to?

Positive and negative!

I went to Las Vegas, glad I went, but no desire to return! :)

Would never return to Warwick Castle. It's quite over rated...and not much even happened there, it just looks the part! :)

Almost anywhere well known and popular will attract families, and this means the hell of other people's children.

With so much over tourism and over crowding, its hard to find places that are actually attractive or interesting but not rammed with people and over priced.

Even local day trips are hard now with parking really difficult to find.

I think this is only going to get worse, not better. My favourite holidays are on Arran, which can't get crowded because its an island served by a ferry.

I've been to loads of the places on this thread and with some exceptions I have to agree, any 'destination' is so often a complete disappointment.

@AwaAnBileYerHeid

Canada. The people were so rude and I just didn't like the vibe tbh.

Budapest. Can't put my finger on it, just didn't like it at all.

I can't imagine not liking Budapest. I absolutely fell in love with it, so badly I wanted to move there. Very odd feeling. Despite everyone in shops glowering at you (but actually very helpful behind the not-smiling facade which was explained to me by a Hungarian friend), and despite the fascistic government, the atmosphere was very gentle and open. And the city itself is magical.

I found Dublin very meh & over priced, but then I was just there overnight to see a band so suspect I didn't do it justice...

Sad to see all the Cairo hate. Yes, the touristy bits are hot & dusty & full of mildly annoying touts, but away from the centre it's lovely (I live here, with a fabulous bedroom window view over the big pointy triangle thingies, so I'm biased).

Hurghada & Sharm I'd agree with - both ok for waterparks, if you've got kids, but pretty bland - head to the North Coast for beaches or Dahab for snorkelling instead!

The people writing off entire continents are hilarious, I mean, seriously, hating all of Asia or Australia is ridiculous!

There are few places I've hated, I even enjoyed bits of Benidorm, though I wouldn't go back. I don't mind Dublin, but its probably one of the worst bits of Ireland ( I am Irish). I absolutely love Rome, I could never tire of it, also loved Turkey and Paphos. I loved Prague, but I was there 25 years ago, I hear it has been ruined, which is a real shame. But I digress.

I lived in Bogner Butlins for a season, now that place is a total shithole! Sydney is ok for a local break, but I wouldn't travel half way round the world to it, Australia has many more amazing places. Oh and the Lake District is a bit rubbish, probably because every time I go there its pissing down. Although I like that cake you get in Cartmel, and I had a top night out in Ulverston of all places. Some bits of Bali are grim, but other bits are bliss. I wasn't keen on Birmingham, I walked through the Bullring and it was grim! Oh and there are quite a few places in NI I will happily never set foot in again, as I am not a fan of sectarian dumps (I am from there).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/07/2021 09:31

Sad to say, I’d never go to Egypt without a bloke.

Once had a week in Luxor with adult dds, dh, and my elderly mother. It was brilliant - except when dds and I tried going for a wander without dh
Non stop harassment. Never had any when dh was with us.
Hotel (The Old Winter Palace) was lovely, though.

I went to Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and a few bits in between as well as bits surrounding those cities.

I think I travelled and experienced Australia enough to write it off and not think it’s worth the hassle of going there again.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 23/07/2021 09:38

I also had an Australian boyfriend and lived there for a while so experienced it as a non-tourist.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 23/07/2021 09:46

"Scottish Highlands, beautiful place but vast, I was expecting more pretty and less wild, more like the lake district, there are miles and miles of nothing, it was also hard to find decent places to walk the dogs as everywhere was so boggy"

This is so funny. - yes there is a lot of nothing but jeez where did you go that everywhere was boggy? Did you try a beach? 😂 we have lots of those! It's defo wild - hopefully that keeps lots of people away!

Changechangychange · 23/07/2021 09:49

People saying Malta - if you stayed inside the St Julians/St Paul’s resorts then yes I can imagine it was boring. But that is like judging all of Spain based on Malaga.

Stay in Valletta or Sliema. Get a car and visit Mdina, Marsaxlokk. Go to the Neolithic sites (Ghar Dalam cave is amazing). Gozo for beaches.

ArabellaScott · 23/07/2021 09:49

Scottish Highlands/west coast are genuinely awful. I would hard avoid. Weather terrible, midges unbearable, nothing to do, scenery unremarkable.

IntermittentParps · 23/07/2021 09:51

Parisian people are some of the rudest people I have ever encountered.
I've never understood this, although I know it's a common sentiment. I've been to Paris about four times and have found people to be at worst professionally polite, if a bit 'busy-big-city', and more often very pleasant and helpful.
The real rude Parisians IME are the ones who've moved to the South Ken/Knightsbridge area in London Grin. Used to work round there and there are a few specific cafes and shops where when they heard my English accent the place would genuinely go silent and the punters would glare and scrutinise me top to toe until I left.

wavecatcher · 23/07/2021 09:53

I hated Turkey, the level of sexual harassment and disrespect from men was crazy. Also Egypt I just didn't feel safe. It's easier to remember the bad places so many lovely places in the U.K and abroad I would love to visit again.

Good God. I think you’ll find there are very few people who agree with you.
WeHaveComeSoFar · 23/07/2021 10:01

@LineofFruity

What a horribly negative, nasty and narrow minded thread.

The OP asked where you wouldn’t go back to, not for a slating of entire continents.

I’ve been to over 50 countries and there isn’t anywhere I wouldn’t go back to. There are places I found difficult or couldn’t wait to leave (Venice for example) but that’s down to the weather (blisteringly hot), circumstances (stranded there with grouchy teething baby), company (grouchy teething baby) and time of year (peak holiday season so super crowded). I hate crowds so obviously should go to Venice out of season if I went again.

I wouldn’t write it off and say it was awful. Just my circumstances made it awful at the time.

Chill out 😂
Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 10:02

I adore Paris and I've been back and would definitely go back again but I must say the aggressive begging and large groups of men hanging around pissing and drinking fucks me off, eg by eiffel tower in beautiful park trying to sit and have a picnic these men leering at us and young blonde dd etc..

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 10:03

For Venice you need to know lots about it really and go into the hidden gems..

WeHaveComeSoFar · 23/07/2021 10:03

This! I genuinely never felt like anyone was 'rude' to me. And if someone being a bit miserable can put you off an entire city, then you need to grow a spine.

mizu · 23/07/2021 10:04

Japan??!

I lived there for 2 years and rarely locked my front door! I felt very safe. And loved living there.

Brighton- had never been there before May this year. Went for a day to visit people. Very underwhelmed.

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 10:07

Marrakech, Amsterdam and Barcelona didn't have any issues with men at all.
Esp not Amsterdam we spent a most time in the center around the 9 streets area, didn't even make it to the red light area!
Marrakech we got light hassle on our first night but after that we were striding around with confidence and no one bothered us and Barcelona, I'd be careful in the rambles but it's an amazing city!

whataboutbob · 23/07/2021 10:12

@Novelusername I couldn’t agree with you more. As women we internalise the potential for harassment and worse. I grew up in North Africa and sadly I’m not surprised by the repeated comments about Tunisia. When you mix poverty and a culture where women tend go outside only with male relatives , in a group or else demurely dressed, and western women are viewed as sexually available it does not make for a great holiday. I also think the elephant in the room here is Islam. I remember going to Thailand with a girlfriend at 21 ( this was in the 80s mind) and marvelling at the fact that no one harassed us ( barring an unfortunate incident in a border town).

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 10:16

Marbella and Puerto banous, I couidnt believe it! So built up and tacky and pb!! Nothing there, I was expecting nature's beauty or drama and its the most boring Bay stuffed with fancy ish cars.. On the tacky side and men with large wrist watches but no class.
One of the least attractive places I've been too.

cushioncovers · 23/07/2021 10:18

Brighton
Weston super mare
Ifracombe
Birmingham
Chester
Swansea
Cardiff
Lanzarote
Malta
Kissimmee

Been once, no desire to ever visit these places again.

AutumnLeafDance · 23/07/2021 10:20

The Cook Islands. Such an expensive disappointment.

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 10:20

And yet on Jeremy vyne they are talking about disrespecting women with a wolf whistle!
A wolf whistle and how it shows disrespect that may go onto cross the line into more serious problems and in contrast we talk of men manhandling women aggressively and groping them... I dread to think about of what women in these countries are subjected too behind closed doors.

Mmmmdanone · 23/07/2021 10:21

Tunisia. I was early 20s at the time and was harassed by men constantly, even groped in a market.
It was beautiful and I have family that love it. I'd probably be fine now being middle aged and invisible but I certainly wouldn't take my teen daughter.
