I'm so sick of the rags that pass for 'journalism' in this country. It's actually embarrassing.

OP posts:
OliverBabish · 22/07/2021 08:44

I really don’t care what they write.

I’m more bothered about the idiot running the country than a hatchet job on a footballer who campaigned to Shock feed children Shock

LazyViper · 22/07/2021 09:00

It’s always footballers, isn’t it? Matt Hancock singled out footballers as being unworthy of their high incomes in a pandemic, but funnily enough ignored all the other high net worth individuals his party courts. God forbid working class young people get ideas above their station.

Marcus Rashford wakes the country up to the idea that things don’t have to be like this. That’s why the establishment considers him so dangerous.

He’s one of this country’s greatest assets. I hope this storm in a teacup doesn’t spoil his day.

longwayoff · 22/07/2021 09:07

Kendodd my grandfather had his arm broken by a police truncheon at Cable St, he and his 2 sons were 'sentenced to death' by Mosley's thugs planning for the future, then they had to go off and fight against ww2 ¹Nazis. My family is now into the 5th generation of actively opposing fascism, which is never far away, although it changes its clothes a lot. It's not too late. They haven't won. The tide will turn again and this will pass too as long as we don't lie down and suck it up. Nils desperandum. The bastards will be on their way out eventually.

Polkadots2021 · 22/07/2021 09:39

Just coming on to say that we all love Marcus Rashford in our house, he's a total hero and role model and that's without even mentioning what he does on the pitch!

Of course the Spectator and the Tories hate him - he's black and raised by a low income single mother (Boris Johnson has said vile things about both in the past), outclasses them all in character, compassion and achievement, and blows apart all their nasty stereotypes.

Simple truth is when you speak up, you get attacked for it, and that's what's happening to him. He's a total legend for everything that he does.

Tal45 · 22/07/2021 09:40

I'm confused about what he's actually done. I don't know if the article is out yet but it seems like they're saying he got a higher profile from doing charity work and so was able to get better brand/sponsorship deals.

If that's it then it's frankly pathetic and embarrassing. Just because they would only do charity work as a way of looking good and making money for themselves they think everyone else must be the same. Showing themselves up not him.

Rashford is a bloody sweetheart and a flipping saint and there's no compared to this shitty self serving government with their dodgy deals and cronyism.

Tal45 · 22/07/2021 09:41

*comparison

Orf1abc · 22/07/2021 09:49

I'm beginning to wonder if they've seen the backlash and pulled the story, because "man earns lots of money as a result of hard work" is something to be praised, not derided. Instead they've an article by Toby Young admitting he was wrong about players taking the knee, and Sajid Javid's self isolation diary!

derxa · 22/07/2021 09:58

The whole nation was behind him Not really if you are Scottish, Welsh or from Northern Ireland.
I don't believe in making people into saints. They're bound to trip up eventually

LizzieSiddal · 22/07/2021 09:59

Kendodd

people are beginning to wake up

Don't agree with this though.
I realised a long while ago that there is NOTHING that will cause Leave voters to rethink. It's like a cult. Even if Dom's latest revelation was that they all work for Putin and Brexit was a Russian plot (job done) to cause irreversible damage to the UK they would just pretend Brexit was STILL a great idea. Also the Tory Party and right wing press will keep stoking the hate to keep supporters on side. And besides, it's too late, they won.

I think this too. We are stuck with a conservative, Brexit government for a long time. All those who pushed and lied for Brexit and Johnson, will never admit they got it wrong. Our only hope is that Johnson is ousted and we get someone as PM who is half competent who has a better attention span and better morals than Johnson.

longwayoff · 22/07/2021 10:10

Toby Young admits he was wrong...knee ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha. Unheard of. Right wing entitled bigot admits mistake GrinGrinGrin In printGrin

Ghosttile · 22/07/2021 10:16

If Toby Young has started writing about things he got wrong there won’t be space in The Spectator for anything else.

longwayoff · 22/07/2021 10:58

Valid point. I await vile Delingpole's explanations. The will have to print extra editions. Excuse me please, just one more Grin

MistySkiesAfterRain · 22/07/2021 11:03

Good if they pulled out. I never speak put but I'm sick of all the hating in general.

Hes at the start of his career and has a great future ahead of him. Just a thought he could maybe set up the Marcus Rashford Foundation to help his future charity work. Great role model.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 22/07/2021 11:31

LOVE rashford - never had to help and has done so much, even in the face of vile abuse and heavy criticism. He made our government u-turn!

But if you’re good, people will use that against you - he has to be perfect and his critics want to decide what that looks like. I wonder how many Spectator journos contribute to lunch clubs or food banks, I wonder how many were instead revealed by the Panama papers as dodging the taxes we all pay?

Rashford is a threat because he’s decent, something some of the Speccie writers are not. I used to read it a lot in their low circulation years, funnily enough. This has put me right off.

EchoNan · 22/07/2021 19:23

@Crankley

I love all the hysteria before the article is even printed. I subscribe to The Spectator and will copy/paste the full article tomorrow if you are interested. I somehow doubt you are - when have you ever been interested in the truth?
I've been waiting since dawn, with me vaccum flask and butties, for you to turn up with the goods Crankley.

Tum te tum

EchoNan · 22/07/2021 19:28

*While I'm waiting, I might have a look how to spell vacuum.

I don't think I've ever written the word, since my Physics GCE back in
1066.

Still waiting.........................................

bunnybuggs · 22/07/2021 19:37

I agree - he has done admirable things but I wish the great british public would not continue to beleive that he has donated 125% of his income to charity. He worked with the charity and made a donation which is admirable BUT he did not donate a whole 20 million to fareshare (organisations and individuals donated after he had highlighted the need. )
I feel he should clarify that he did not give 125% of his income to a charity. He is a good role model - and his profile was obviously instrumental in the fund raising for the charity.

longwayoff · 22/07/2021 19:41

Nobody but you believes hes donated 125% of his income otherwise he'd be queuing at a food bank himself. Dont be ridiculous

lannistunut · 22/07/2021 19:45

@longwayoff

Nobody but you believes hes donated 125% of his income otherwise he'd be queuing at a food bank himself. Dont be ridiculous
He's donated 125% of his current net worth. Not income.
bunnybuggs · 22/07/2021 22:25

@longwayoff

Nobody but you believes hes donated 125% of his income otherwise he'd be queuing at a food bank himself. Dont be ridiculous
If that was directed at me - I would point out if you read my post that I never said that I believed he donated 20 million of his own money - but twitter and social media is alive with people who genuinely believe he has done so. The times did not help to make it clear that he persuaded organisations via his profile to donate to the cause. His net worth is £16 million -so if anyone believes he has donated 125% of his net worth - that is still £20 million (which he did not donate to the charity)
longwayoff · 23/07/2021 09:28

125% of 16 million = 20 million. Really? If you say so.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/07/2021 12:09

125% of 16 is 20.

Surely no one believes he's donated that?

Anyway, it's a good thing The Spectator saw some sense.

WASHI · 23/07/2021 12:23

@longwayoff

125% of 16 million = 20 million. Really? If you say so.
What do you think 125% of 16 million is, @longwayoff?
Clymene · 23/07/2021 12:57

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

125% of 16 is 20.

Surely no one believes he's donated that?

Anyway, it's a good thing The Spectator saw some sense.

Is there any evidence that they were planning a hit piece other than rashford's tweet?
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/07/2021 13:02

That's a good question. If they did, then it's a good thing, it would have served no one.

But it's only MR's tweet so far. Why knows?
