I'm so sick of the rags that pass for 'journalism' in this country. It's actually embarrassing.

OP posts:
LizzieSiddal · 21/07/2021 12:35

I knew there would be a media hatchet job on him soon. There’s no surprise there. I just assumed it would be from the Daily Mail.

Same here. They can’t wait to bring this man down. We can’t have a young, black, working class man getting above his station abd being a role model, can we.HmmAngry

SnakeyTakey · 21/07/2021 12:37

You just know all the tabloid journalists have been combing through his life praying to find out he cheated on a girlfriend once, or got in a fight once, or dropped some litter once.

Motnight · 21/07/2021 12:42

Thanks EchoNan. Interesting to see how quickly unsubstantiated accusations are made.

badpuma · 21/07/2021 12:45

@MyOtherProfile

Hoping someone will post the article soon. You can only read it if you subscribe. No way!
It hasn't been published yet. It may well now won't be published at all (or they'll wait a few years until he's had a dip in popularity like Ryan Giggs and then add to it).
EchoNan · 21/07/2021 12:47

Mo Salah hasn't had such vitriol applied to his Charity work has he?

I was thinking about this. Building a school to educate girls, for example.

My concluson is that, unlike Marcus, Mo hasn't had a direct run in with the Government and British Establishment .

notimagain · 21/07/2021 12:48

Isn’t there a very important difference in law between the terms “evasion” and “avoidance” in the context of what is being discussed?

Could get very messy if the wrong term gets thrown around……

Clymene · 21/07/2021 12:52

Well that was a total no story wasn't it?

EchoNan · 21/07/2021 12:52

@Motnight

Thanks EchoNan. Interesting to see how quickly unsubstantiated accusations are made.
You are welcome Motnight

I see it happening a lot. Sad to say. It's rather pathetic really isn't it?

Lampzade · 21/07/2021 12:53

@HmmmmmmInteresting

Have they done any pieces on the dodgy contracts the Tories awarded their donors during the pandemic? Companies with no assets and no experience being awarded millions of pounds worth of contracts?
Absolutely Complete and utter bastards
sashagabadon · 21/07/2021 12:59

If it’s tax evasion ( or schemes that look dodgy) then it’s a fair expose regardless of how “good” the person is.
We’ll have to wait and see what the article says.
Plenty of stars get caught doing dodgy tax things, Barlow, beckham, Jimmy Carr spring to mind.
It might not be that, more taking advantage of brand deals etc which may be fair enough, if above board.

Absolutely. The Tories and the Tory press smarting at being outwitted by a working class Black footballer.

Good post @livingwitheds1984

Someone is embarrassed that this man is showing them up, and wants him taken down a peg or two.

I don't have heroes, and I don't pay much attention to football players really, but it takes a lot for a person his age, not that long out of school himself, to stand up and say "actually, I was a child on FSM, and this scheme isn't going to work, and therefore vulnerable children are going to go without and their families are going to struggle and suffer. We need to do something about it".

Because the people putting mitigation for a pandemic in place are so privileged and so removed from what life is actually like for large swathes of the country that they haven't got a clue how to support families in most dire need.

A quick phone call to a school secretary, who has seen plenty of parents in reception holding back tears when they have to ask for support or help could have told them everything they needed about how such a support scheme might work at ground level. Angry
And I don't mean the receptionist at Grey Coat School which is obviously just another inner city school like any other Hmm

But let's face it, we all know those that are struggling can just swan down to the food bank and get FREE FOOD whenever they want...
I hear they get FREE HOUSES too! Shock

I liked this

The Spectator planning to run a hit piece on Marcus Rashford tomorrow
FlibbertyGiblets · 21/07/2021 13:50

He is a fine young man, as always it doesn't take a deep scratch to uncover racism in the press. A young Black man, doing well, showing up his elders, doing the right thing, well let's get him cut down to size, we'll show him not to be uppity, etc.

BraveBananaBadge · 21/07/2021 13:56

He's a class act and wise beyond his years.

NeonDreams · 21/07/2021 14:20

No surprise unfortunately. The Spectator is far right, and they take pride in being contrary to mainstream values. I wouldn't piss on The Spectator writers if they were on fire, I'd pull up a seat with marshmallows instead.

dopenguinsdance · 21/07/2021 14:21

What @Westchesterarms said but with the caveat that Rashford (a) undoubtedly employs professional advisors to deal with his financial affairs and relies on their advice and, (b) with all due respect to him, like most of us doesn't get all the nuances of the UK's labyrinthine tax rules, hence using professionals to do it for him.
IMO HMRC isn't fit for purpose and seems to go after easy targets rather than putting in some real effort to shut down black market earnings or those who earn but don't put into the communal pot.
I'll wait for the 'revelations' and make my own mind up.

TonTonMacoute · 21/07/2021 14:30

No one should be given a free pass on wrongdoing just because they do good works. This could be something his managers are doing on his behalf and that he knows nothing about.

It is right that it is investigated fairly and if he has done nothing wrong then he should be able to prove it quite easily and the Speccie will look silly. It is not likely to do any serious damage his saintly image.

Crankley · 21/07/2021 14:49

I love all the hysteria before the article is even printed. I subscribe to The Spectator and will copy/paste the full article tomorrow if you are interested. I somehow doubt you are - when have you ever been interested in the truth?

Looking forward to it Crankley Assuredly, I'm interested in your "Big Reveal."

Seems a bit...hysterical. Try not to get so worked up, poppet.

EchoNan · 21/07/2021 15:03

The only people getting hysterical on here appear to be Specatator supporters, who are posting unevidenced waffle about tax dodging.

I wonder if it ia a the News of the World retired journo chapel day trip?
Shock ,horror, etc. etc.

I'll wait and see.....

EchoNan · 21/07/2021 15:05

Spectator
I got confused with "The Speculator". Grin

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/07/2021 15:07

@livingwitheds1984

This is a sign of how polarised the UK has become.

It feels like the country is more split into Left and Right than it has been in my lifetime, and people feel obligated to support anything their 'side' does.

A lot of people on MN support the Spectator because they've been loudly gender critical.

But the Spectator isn't gender critical because they give a shit about women or women's rights, they're GC because they're right wing. Right wing publications hate anyone who is or makes claim to minority status.

Please don't let the press brainwash you into thinking you have to support racism just because the person publication doing it is GC. You can agree with someone on one issue and disagree with them on another.

Spot on

There's a certain irony that Crankley, oft defender of Johnson and Patel, claims to have an interest in the truth!

The Spectator is owned by the Barclay Brothers, who also own the Telegraph, and are (were - one is now dead) tax exiles. Rashford has done more in his short life for the country, than the Barclay family ever did in their many years of extreme wealth.
