Do you wear an apron when you cook?

I've never owned one and just saw some really nice ones on FB but what's actually the point of them? I never seem to end up with food on my clothes from cooking.

I only wear one at Christmas, I could probably do one covering my bum as that's where I seem to wipe my hands when I'm cooking/baking HmmBlushEnvy

Yes.

doodleygirl · 18/07/2021 20:20

Yes, always, I’m a really messy cook

Natsku · 18/07/2021 20:20

I do, and when washing up. And when eating a fried egg sandwich, always drip yolk on myself!

xsquared · 18/07/2021 22:03

Yes, I have a habit of wiping hands after chopping, peeling, making anything that potentially bubbles and spatters like oil, soup, sauces etc. I suppose it's like wearing a tea towel for me.

Etinox · 18/07/2021 22:17

@SpongeBarb

Yes, bloody tinned tomatoes!
Yes! I’m old Grin Along with slippers and cloth napkins, aprons are something I resisted as frumpy and now couldn’t live without.

I have a great pvc one - can't be doing with one that you have to wash, this wipes down. The main reason I love it is that I always get a wet top when washing up - this stops that. Also for when I'm eating messy food!

JumpLeadsForTwo · 18/07/2021 22:25

@Dilbertian

Always. And when doing the washing up. I've ruined enough clothes with a splash of grease or tomato sauce!

But what I don't get is aprons made of thin cloth. What's the point? Any splash goes right through, especially if you lean forward and press against the worktop. I always wear a wipe-clean fabric-backed apron. My current one is wearing out, and I cannot find a replacement. They're all either absorbent cloth, or tacky. I may have to buy some tablecloth on a roll and make myself one.

Look on eBay - I found a greaa as t vintage typhoo pvc one, excellent condition

I was thinking about aprons today when I realised I have 7 and never wear them. The cause of this thinking was having just splattered tomato down my favourite pale blue yoga pants whilst making gazpacho...I regularly splash so I need to start using them!

Rainbowsew · 18/07/2021 22:27

Yes. Love my apronsSmile

LemonRoses · 18/07/2021 22:29

Yes always. Very unhygienic to cook in clothes you’ve been wearing all day - a bit like using unwashed dishcloths.

reluctantbrit · 18/07/2021 22:30

Yes if I panfry anything after I had to throw tops away when I couldn't get the grease stain out.

Also, everything with curry or tomato sauce and if I bake bread/dough which needs kneading. I don't use it for baking if I use the handmixer.

I grew up with getting an apron thrown at me when I learned to cook with my mum, so it's normal for me.

@bonbonours

I have one but forget to ever put it on and usually spill stuff on my clothes
This is so me! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bolognese splatter on a light coloured top anyone? 😳

Dilbertian · 19/07/2021 13:03

If you wear a cloth apron, how often do you wash it?

Ninkanink · 19/07/2021 13:05

I wash mine every few days when I do a load of tea towels.

justasking111 · 19/07/2021 14:03

My apron has just arrived from Amazon

woodhill · 19/07/2021 14:05

Yes most times and sometimes when doing housework

fluffiphlox · 19/07/2021 14:08

I always wear one in the kitchen whether I’m cooking, cleaning or tidying. Saves the front of my clothes.

Haven't washed mine yet. It's printed so doesn't look at all dirty, and is only to catch the odd tinned tomato splash or butter spitting at me. I just don't want that on my clothes, or the onion and garlic smell.

I'm not sure I've ever washed mine....

For most MN hygiene maniacs not often enough.

It really depends, if I stain it with tomato work curry sauce it goes in the laundry basket the same day, otherwise when I feel there are too many stains in it. Q

I have 100% cotton ones, some are sold by kitchen uniform company so proper chef material, they can be washed with 60 degrees and apart from the odd tomato stain they all come out clean. If they just have flour on it it goes in with any 30 degrees wash I have in the same colour.

EverythingDelegated · 19/07/2021 21:52

I've just bought a new one today on the back of this thread Grin

Ninkanink · 19/07/2021 22:03

@EverythingDelegated I’ve been looking since yesterday! Managed to resist for now...

Oddbutnotodd · 19/07/2021 22:10

I tend to wear one for breadmaking; I like both types - Swedish crossover and conventional ones. They’re fairly thick. I feel more efficient somehow when I wear one. Wash them pretty often.

LemonRoses · 19/07/2021 22:16

I have a couple of housework aprons with big pockets and then cooking aprons that are washed daily with tea towels and dishcloths.
