Do you wear an apron when you cook?

I've never owned one and just saw some really nice ones on FB but what's actually the point of them? I never seem to end up with food on my clothes from cooking.

Dilbertian
I got a really thick tartan one from Ikea, it's brilliant.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 18/07/2021 12:44

Plus large front pocket.

Raera · 18/07/2021 12:47

Not often, for some reason DH finds an apron very sexy, so I only wear one for specific reasons!!

TheQueef · 18/07/2021 12:50

I have a spare if anyone is a size 10/12 with a flat chest, likes flowers and wants a free pinny by giving an internet stranger your address, PM me Wink

Picklypickles · 18/07/2021 12:50

I've not had one since I was a little girl but just the other day I was making fajitas and got sauce on a brand new dress I was wearing for the first time so now I'm thinking maybe I should get one!

Kinsters · 18/07/2021 13:28

@pastabest

Mine is this one from Raine and Humble

It's a crossover back and I love it

Oh I love that! You've all convinced me to get one.

@crosshatching I love my radical tea towel company apron, it’s the best one I own. Such excellent quality fabric and I love the Votes For Women colours/image. I will be asking for another RTTC apron for Christmas.

CraftyGin · 18/07/2021 13:52

I almost always wear an apron when cooking, and when cleaning with bleach.

I have spoiled too many clothes in the past.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 13:53

Yes I do!! It's from years of working in kitchens, it feels wrong not to.

I have 5 so always a clean one daily and can go in the wash every evening. Look at Dexam, they have nice quality cotton ones.

MaMelon · 18/07/2021 13:56

Always - I hate cooking without one, I invariably splash myself with something. Mine is a very fetching black Gastropub one with a big front pocket I got free in M&S ages ago.

SpongeBarb · 18/07/2021 13:58

I don't always but if I don't I splatter tomato sauce on me or wipe flour all over my jeans so for me they aren't just a 1950s look!

TheChosenTwo · 18/07/2021 13:59

No never. I rarely cook though. Dh doesn’t wear one and he cooks every day.
I’m a messy eater and always spill food down myself but I wash those clothes at the end of the day usually anyway so no way am I creating extra washing in the form of an apron which would also need washing!
Also, just no Grin

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 18/07/2021 14:02

Yes! I often regret it when I don’t.

Hot oil splashes and opening ring-pull tubes of tomatoes are key offenders.
Stirring bubbling ragu and rinsing dirty utensils under the tap are other danger points.

BarberQueue · 18/07/2021 14:03

Always wear an apron when cooking and don't take it off until all the dinner things are cleared up.

I also have a floral cleaning overall which I love. I am messy so if I didn't wear these things I would be constantly ruining clothes!

SpongeBarb · 18/07/2021 14:04

Yes, bloody tinned tomatoes!

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 18/07/2021 14:08

Depends what I’m cooking but if it’s flour, icing sugar, hot fat, tomato based etc then yes. Apart from being so practical, I like the ritual of taking them off to sit and eat.

Greenlittle · 18/07/2021 14:12

I usually wear one while cooking or baking. I have quite a few, and rotate. I probably don’t wash my aprons as often as I should!

FreezerBird · 18/07/2021 15:17

@Gazelda

Only on Christmas Day. I like the flourish of taking it off when everything is on the table, which signifies that my work for the day is done and everyone else can clear the table, fill the dishwasher etc.
Oh gosh this has made me realise that I have a Christmas Day Apron. It's not christmassy but it lives in a drawer not on the back of the kitchen door with the others.

It's almost ankle length on me so keeps me completely clean if I'm properly dressed up (ha, when does this happen now?), but impractical for every day.

My mum wore it at Christmas too.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 18/07/2021 15:47

Almost always as I am very messy and always manage to spill stuff down me or get grease splashes. I have a cool denim and leather one, which I like to think makes me look a bit hipster (not)!

Maggiesgirl · 18/07/2021 16:14

I wear one all the time. Clean one each day. I spill everything. When I was a CM, I always worse one with a deep pocket. By the end if the day it was filled with stray bits of lego, dummies, a handkerchief and other assortments of the day. My charges often would give me something to put in my 'podkit'.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/07/2021 16:22

It's not only about getting food on yourself - wearing an apron stops your clothes of smelling of cooking, eg frying onions and garlic.

ginghamtablecloths · 18/07/2021 18:32

I put an apron on every day when I cook or prepare food. For one thing it avoids splashes on my clothes and at this time of year I want to keep my summer dresses nice - the apron also has pockets which my dresses mostly don't have - so, somewhere to put my phone.

Youdiditanyway · 18/07/2021 18:37

Nope and I never get my clothes messy.

kowari · 18/07/2021 18:41

I have one and use it all the time when cooking on the stovetop. www.etsy.com/uk/listing/789056056/cotton-apron-houseplants-apron-carrots?ref=shop_home_feat_3
I have the carrots one and I love it!

rubbletrouble · 18/07/2021 19:04

I should, but I don't own one and when I do see one I like, I always think I would never wear one.
Shame as it would be practical for me especially when baking.
