I've been charged £65 for a pizza instead of £6.50,what can I do?

Went out on a date on Thursday and had a few drinks.
Popped into pizza shop on way home and spent £6.50 on a pizza (or so I thought )
He said contactless was down so I had to type my pin in.
Anyway checked my bank yesterday and £65 was pending for this pizza shop.
Went straight up when they opened and the man was rude and said I must have spent £65.
I said I only ordered 1 pizza and asked them to check cctv or the till.
He said cctv wasn't working and asked me to leave the shop.
Is there anything I can do here?

If it’s a pending transaction could you call your bank and see if they can stop the funds clearing your account? Surely to god the staff in the place would remember someone, as the person you spoke to seems to be implying, purchasing 10 pizzas in the one go.

shopoholiicc · 10/07/2021 10:54

The man who said I spent £65 was actually the guy who served me.
I'm assuming he owns the shop.

Give him 24 hours to refund or tell him you will be naming and shaming all over Social media

Can you dispute it with the bank?

youaresunshine · 10/07/2021 10:56

I'm no help op as I'm not sure what your next course of action should be but I'm just commenting to say how much thus sucks. Hope it gets sorted asap!!!

dementedpixie · 10/07/2021 10:57

Contact your bank to dispute the debit card transaction

shopoholiicc · 10/07/2021 10:57

Unfortunately the money has now gone from pending and is showing as gone from my account :-(
I'm going back into the shop again today and see what he says.
I think he has done this on purpose

You can start a debit card dispute with your bank

Soontobe60 · 10/07/2021 10:59

I’d second the name and shame tactic. Go back - take someone else with you for back up - and tell them that you want a copy of the transaction and will not leave until you get it.

ginghamstarfish · 10/07/2021 10:59

If you used a card surely you got a receipt? Take this back to the shop.

SpringSparrow · 10/07/2021 10:59

You might be able to stop the pending transaction if you contact your bank. He sounds like he deliberately scammed you. Can you tell him you will put it on your local social media if he doesn’t refund you ? Did you not look at the amount before you put your pin in?

dementedpixie · 10/07/2021 11:00

It's not pending, it's come out the account
Contact your bank

Lipz · 10/07/2021 11:01

Ring your bank and do a chargeback, you have lots of time to do this, something like 60 days.

duffed · 10/07/2021 11:01

If you used your card, you can call the bank and they'll probably refund it - VIsa, and mastercard both do chargeback protection.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 11:02

Dispute the transaction with your bank, it's known as a chargeback.

An almighty shaming on local FB groups can be equally effective, and often quicker than going through the bank.

safariboot · 10/07/2021 11:04

Take it up with your bank, ask them to do a chargeback, explain what happened when you complained to the retailer including that you were told to leave. And also report to trading standards.

I agree that a deliberate scam looks likely, considering the "contactless not working" claim and the belligerent attitude towards you.

MrsDoctorDear · 10/07/2021 11:06

Sounds like a deliberate scam. Make sure you name and shame so other people don't get fooled.

shopoholiicc · 10/07/2021 11:07

Thanks everyone
I didn't even know I could do a chargeback
Thank you so much
Can't really afford loose over £50

Ugh he sounds vile. Definitely don't give up, demand your money back. Honestly once you have it, I'd still name and shame. He sounds like a toe rag.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2021 11:09

When you put your PIN in it should have shown the whole amount on the screen. Regardless, this is easily missed. I'd go to your bank and possibly local trading standards as this sounds like a deliberate scam with "contactless not working".

HighlandCowbag · 10/07/2021 11:11

Definitely a scam, try your bank first, then even maybe Trading Standards. I bet its not the first time it's happened and I bet its easy for his bank/merchant to check whether contactless was working.

Recruit2020 · 10/07/2021 11:12

Whilst it is a civil dispute. Id contact 101 to log this as intelligence it may not be the first instance, this happened with a local business in my area. It was intentional on their behalf a lot of drunk people were being charged more and blissfully unaware x

NautaOcts · 10/07/2021 11:15

Don’t think a receipt would help as surely would just show £65? I’m afraid I think he must have tried it on in the hope you wouldn’t notice the amount, which you didn’t.
I don’t know how you can prove you didn’t get/order 10 pizzas ☹️
But by all means try the suggestions above

NautaOcts · 10/07/2021 11:16

If you do post on social media just keep it factual and dignified and with a ‘warning others to double check amount charged’ type slant

Bluedeblue · 10/07/2021 11:18

Retired Bank Manager here.......Call your bank. You can use the charge back scheme or Section 75, depending on what card you used. You will 100% get your money back. I used the chargeback scheme to get £2500 back for a car that broke down after I got home (it was a dud).
