I've been charged £65 for a pizza instead of £6.50,what can I do?

Went out on a date on Thursday and had a few drinks.
Popped into pizza shop on way home and spent £6.50 on a pizza (or so I thought )
He said contactless was down so I had to type my pin in.
Anyway checked my bank yesterday and £65 was pending for this pizza shop.
Went straight up when they opened and the man was rude and said I must have spent £65.
I said I only ordered 1 pizza and asked them to check cctv or the till.
He said cctv wasn't working and asked me to leave the shop.
Is there anything I can do here?

Sounds planned by the shop. If you have local FB sites name and shame

Hopeisnotastrategy · 10/07/2021 11:22

Go to the police. It sounds deliberate. You may not be the only one he's done it to.

Zhampagne · 10/07/2021 11:23

Contact your bank urgently.

@BertieBotts

When you put your PIN in it should have shown the whole amount on the screen. Regardless, this is easily missed. I'd go to your bank and possibly local trading standards as this sounds like a deliberate scam with "contactless not working".
This. ^ You would have/should have seen the amount, and it's possible you may struggle to get the money back, but it doesn't mean you definitely won't.

Contact your bank/go in if you can, and show them the receipt. It should say 'one pizza' on it, and that wouldn't be £65!

If it doesn't itemise what you had, you may be in for a rough ride trying to get the money back. You may have to involve the police.

Hopefully you know the exact time you were in there.

Good luck @shopoholiicc

DinosaurDiana · 10/07/2021 11:27

He probably assumed you’d been drinking and wouldn’t notice.
I had a similar thing done to me years ago.

ThursdayWeld · 10/07/2021 11:29

Either the police, and/or the local council need to be informed about his behaviour!

Thanks everyone I didn't even know I could do a chargeback Thank you so much Can't really afford loose over £50
When I use to do chargebacks, the bank would request the internal till receipt for the sale. All companies have to keep these for their records. (when it was paper, but computerised works the same), if it's a scam the till receipt will say 6.50 as he won't have put 65.00 into the till sale, otherwise the till will have balanced, whereas by putting the sale in for 6.50 and entering 65.00 on the card reader, his till will be over, leaving him the extra money to steal. If it's a genuine mistake on their side the records will still show an overcharge as the items bought won't add up to 65.00, and his till won't balance. There should not be a problem getting the money back, it can take a little while as the bank will have to request the receipts from them, investigate it and then refund you the money.
MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 11:30

Definitely take this further

If you have to get police involved as it’s theft and he may be doing it often

DIanaRiggFan · 10/07/2021 11:31

You can raise a query with your bank over it and they will hopefully sort it out for you

FawnFrenchieMum · 10/07/2021 11:32

You may not have much luck with the bank as you put your pin in authorising the payment without checking the amount on screen.

willowmelangell · 10/07/2021 11:35

Not heard of a scam and mushroom pizza before.
I will be a bit more alert from now on.
Hope this gets sorted quickly for you op.

MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 11:35

The coincidence of contactless being down, his error, and his inability to see that £65 is unlikely for a single buyer - as you offered that he look at cctv

All makes me think he’s scamming you

Zilla1 · 10/07/2021 11:36

An alternative might have been waiting until they are busy at night then returning with some friends and loudly repeating the dispute and pointing out he might have remembered someone staggering out with 10 pizzas or £65 of food if they could even cook and sell 10 pizzas at once. Would his shop allow a contactless transaction for £65 as IME most shops limit it lower though I know some raised it for COVID contamination reasons. If he asks you to leave, just stay at the front of the queue and encourage him to call the police.

DoubleTweenQueen · 10/07/2021 11:38

Places often don't give receipts, particularly for contactless payments. You have to be on the ball and check amount on screen.
I always try to do this and always try to get a receipt - although it seems to be annoying and take an extra second or two.

This guy probably has form.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 10/07/2021 11:40

Call the police- it’s robbery. How many other people are they doing this to? They are obviously taking advantage of drunk, vulnerable people and hoping they don’t remember how much they spent.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2021 11:40

The bank don't do anything while the payment is pending, they'll only do it once the payment has gone out.

Call them, explain what's happened, they'll refund the charges and contact the merchant.
If the merchant can prove it's a genuine purchase, they'll take the money back and notify you. If they can't, you won't have to do anything else.

I had a contactless issue recently and the bank were fantastic.

CorvusPurpureus · 10/07/2021 11:41

Social media may be your friend.

I once got charged £500 not £50 for a meal out - I work overseas & had taken the dc out for a burger, then we travelled to visit the UK for a month a few days later.

There was so much bank activity going on (I had just been paid including an end of year bonus & travel allowance- then flights, hotels, travel to visit family in the UK, more eating out, payday) that it took me a fortnight to notice the dodgy transaction!

By which point the burger joint were claiming they had no record of anything.

It's a tenner a head sort of place, so I pointed out that they'd have bloody well noticed a £500 single bill on a quiet weekday afternoon, but no.

Twitter & a bunch of outraged mates circulating the story amongst the ME expat community got me my money back in the end...

Aha!! The records will say that OP paid contactlessly. Which cannot be done for a £65 bill!!!

It's better to log it with the bank because they'll see a pattern of repeated behaviour and they'll refund the money. The police might investigate but £65 isn't going to be high on their priority list.
ThursdayWeld · 10/07/2021 11:42

Oh bollox, just seen that he made OP type her PIN in.

Deffo did that on purpose! Angry

Couchbettato · 10/07/2021 11:42

If you paid on a credit card you can request a chargeback from your bank.

Christmasfairy2020 · 10/07/2021 11:43

Tell him the time you bought it and say you want to see the receipt showing you spent 64 quid. Ring don't go in

ThursdayWeld · 10/07/2021 11:43

But, once you've got your money back, or even before, you need to contact Trading Standards.

thriftyhen · 10/07/2021 11:44

This won't help in this situation, but I always get a receipt and check it before I leave the shop. Shops often make mistakes, particularly supermarkets. Once you have left the shop and gone home, it becomes difficult to rectify or otherwise it's too much hassle. I hope you get this situation sorted.
