I've been charged £65 for a pizza instead of £6.50,what can I do?

Went out on a date on Thursday and had a few drinks.
Popped into pizza shop on way home and spent £6.50 on a pizza (or so I thought )
He said contactless was down so I had to type my pin in.
Anyway checked my bank yesterday and £65 was pending for this pizza shop.
Went straight up when they opened and the man was rude and said I must have spent £65.
I said I only ordered 1 pizza and asked them to check cctv or the till.
He said cctv wasn't working and asked me to leave the shop.
Is there anything I can do here?

Ah, fair enough, then. Seems such an easy step (with potential for error) to automatically bridge and eliminate with modern technology.

I totally agree - in my case, it was because the company was too cheap to pay for any upgraded systems Grin

We constantly had till discrepancies because people inputted 3 instead of 5 or 8, or missed a zero off the end. As a manager, it was my job to deal with them all at the end of the day and it was a NIGHTMARE lol.

DoubleTweenQueen · 10/07/2021 12:49

@ThursdayWeld Unfortunately worse as op had to put her PIN in as guy said contactless was 'down' - think you've picked that up though :) Scrutiny of where decimal point was needed.

I would urge everyone to be super vigilant and always double check when making purchases - it's become too informal, although the convenience is great, too much trust can be placed in the hands of vendors.

Definitely, and always ask for a receipt - and check it before you leave the shop. You're far more likely to get the issue solved then and there.

@Orf1abc

Dispute the transaction with your bank, it's known as a chargeback.

An almighty shaming on local FB groups can be equally effective, and often quicker than going through the bank.

This. Also, TripAdvisor and Google reviews sharing your experience.
SparklingStars10 · 10/07/2021 12:56

We had this with a takeaway curry, it came to £30 something but he accidentally pressed two zeros, so came to over £300, as it was over the phone payment, we didn’t notice initially, however, we called them and they apologised and refunded us the additional money.
Do you have a receipt?

Doris86 · 10/07/2021 12:56

Even if the money has already left your account, your bank can do a chargeback and claw it back for you.

Strange coincidence that contactless was down when the pizza man made this ‘mistake’.

Lemonmelonsun · 10/07/2021 12:57

Try every avenue and create a fuss, police, bank, sm.. Etc etc etc keep hassling him for the money back

yes and there's too much pressure not to bother with a receipt - I don't bother myself but I often think it's unwise not to have one, not only because of this sort of thing, but to avoid allegations of shop-lifting.

@Hellocatshome

I often phone and order my takeaway just giving the card number over the phone so really they could just take any amount they fancy. Surely that’s more open to scamming than what happened to the OP?

Why the hell do you do that when there are a many safer ways to pay?!

I do the same. I don't have cash and a lot of places don't want cash payments so I'm not sure how else I can pay!
Oblomov21 · 10/07/2021 13:02

Hope you get this scammer sorted.

MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 13:05

I don’t get the not paying over the phone. If they need it to do the delivery what other option do you have?

Cash on delivery. Cash or card on collection.

I would never ever give my card details over the phone. How on earth do you know they're not writing them down?!

Order online.
Order over the phone and collect in person.
Carry cash.

Payment over the phone seems so unsafe to me. They can take your card details and do whatever they want with them!

HyggeTygge · 10/07/2021 13:09

What idiot would do this to gain £50? Lost revenue from you posting a (very factual) account on various SN and trip advisor will cost him way more than that.

Hellocatshome · 10/07/2021 13:12

how else would you pay over the phone?

I wouldn't! I would pay cash on delivery, card on delivery (some have mobile card machines) or order online via the shops own website or the many 3rd party ordering apps.

Because OP has no proof either way. It's her words against his.

He'll just go on social media and say something like:

"A customer came in last night and bought £65 worth of pizza. The contactless system was down so she used her pin and checked the amount before pressing enter. Now she's trying to claim she only spent £6.50. I'm only a small business and I can't believe she's trying to steal £50 off me! If there was a problem, why didn't she anything at the time?"

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/07/2021 13:13

Those options aren't always possible. Not all takeaways have a website and when I did use one they admitted they prioritised orders taken over the phone when I complained at how late it was. Over the last year a lot of places haven't wanted collection or cash payments.

Actually it has switched to online recently, on the site or an app

I haven’t ordered takeaway for ages, it used to be phone quite a while ago

But I’ve not done cash for a very long time

OhRene · 10/07/2021 13:19

@HyggeTygge depends on how many pissed customers he's doing it to a night. But any decent scammer should have said, "Oops! So sorry! Let me refund you now!" to any customer who actually notices. That's basic Scammer long game 101.

I've been with my absolutely sloshed mate many a weekend and noticed more than once the kebab shops give her change from a fiver when she paid with a tenner or twenty. She never noticed but I did and would pull them up. It must be a really common thing because it happened at least half a dozen times that I happened to be with her. (She was a heavy, HEAVY drinker and would be almost incoherent and barely able to stand every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night) An easy target for dodgy kebab shops who must have been making a fortune scamming change in the shops on what we called the pizza mile. Shops that only bothered opening on weekends after the pubs and clubs shut.

I mean, if they weren't options I just wouldn't order from that place.

I'm happy to order over the phone but I wouldn't be telling a total stranger my card information like that.

MGMidget · 10/07/2021 13:26

I suspect he keyed in £65.00 and you didnt notice the decimal point discrepancy. It would be easy to miss this as the figures are the same. If caught out he could also claim it was an innocent mistake but his reaction suggests it wasn’t! You obviously wouldn’t go there again but he’s made 10 purchases out of you at once so may not care! He is probably experiencing hard financial times at the moment so getting desperate to keep business going. (Not that I am sympathetic to him at all just guessing what’s motivating him). I think the problem is you confirmed it with the pin number so will struggle to prove it was incorrect now. Be careful with online reviews as accusing him of dishonesty when you can’t prove it could give you bigger problem. Sorry this has happened to you. There are so many scammers about at the moment.

Cloverleaf20 · 10/07/2021 13:26

What a dirty rat !! Obviously done on putting

Cloverleaf20 · 10/07/2021 13:26

On purpose!!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/07/2021 13:27

If it really was for £65 He wouldn't have needed to tell op that contactless was down if she paid with a card as it's only up to £45
