Went out on a date on Thursday and had a few drinks.
Popped into pizza shop on way home and spent £6.50 on a pizza (or so I thought )
He said contactless was down so I had to type my pin in.
Anyway checked my bank yesterday and £65 was pending for this pizza shop.
Went straight up when they opened and the man was rude and said I must have spent £65.
I said I only ordered 1 pizza and asked them to check cctv or the till.
He said cctv wasn't working and asked me to leave the shop.
Is there anything I can do here?

The banks are usually good with this sort of thing. Call your bank and speak to someone, they will be able to help.

I would be very careful about naming and shaming. This guy is clearly an arsehole and you don’t want to bring more trouble your way. Wait until the bank has sorted you out, and then be FACTUAL in your online reviews. Much better to imply that he’s a thief by saying something like “I’d avoid this place, but if you go, make sure you check your transaction carefully as I was charged £65 for one pizza, rather than £6.50. Even after talking to the owner to explain, he denied it had happened, and it was only sorted after doing a chargeback with the bank” type review.

Just an idea but if takeaway, are there any CCTV cameras in other businesses or private homes that you have ever noticed on the route you took where you can go speak to someone and ask if they saw you pass by on the night to prove you were not carrying pizza box mountain. This is a good idea.
I'd name and shame too, albeit in the factual way Derbee suggests.

They must know that it's much more likely that one person would have spent £6.50, as presumably one pizza or slices or whatever cost that, rather than £65.00, and it's far less likely is it that several pizzas would come to exactly £65.00 anyway? Not even on a Domino's order unless you rounded it up for charity!

It's their error, not yours and they should be able to check their records and refund on first asking. Please report them to local trading standards as well as giving factual negative reviews.

HellaChange had the OP said this? I can’t see an update to say money has been returned, though really hope it has!

jollygreenpea · 12/07/2021 10:39

Just checking in to see if the op has got her money back yet, and if so how.

I know you've said now you've got your money back. But honestly the cheek of this place. They've clearly done it on purpose and you won't be the only one.

They need to be very careful indeed, as if their business keeps being subject to a regular extraordinarily high amount of chargebacks, they could find all the payment processing providers declining to continue offering their services at the premises - or at the very least only with buttock-clenchingly high transaction-percentage rates, to reflect the greatly increased level of risk and additional workload to the banks.

Being a cash-only business can sometimes make things more straightforward, but for most businesses, it's going to lead to a massive drop in custom.

I know you've said now you've got your money back.
The OP hasn't said that.
