Would any welsh MNs be up for our own subforum?

I know we are not as numerous but we are enthusiastic! MN currently has a Craicnet and a Scotsnet but no Walesnet! If you think this would be something you'd use please comment here or on the post below in site stuff (or on both!). Any name suggestions also welcome - Ddraignet was one, or the more traditional Walesnet/Cymrunet?

You wouldn't even have to be Welsh/living in Wales - it would be a good resource for people looking for holiday advice for example.

thesunwillout · 08/07/2021 19:22

Yes to this.

My daughter is studying in Wales, I'm always reading the Covid Wales thread.
I'm in England but I'm Welsh.

thesunwillout · 08/07/2021 19:23

Yes The Cwtch!!!

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 08/07/2021 19:27

Definitely YES Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿!

GogLais · 08/07/2021 19:42

Count me out if you are calling it Cwtch. That's not a Welsh word

Cwtsh is.

DMCWelshcakes · 08/07/2021 19:51

Totally on board with a Welsh board!

thevassal · 08/07/2021 20:06

@BestIsWest

I know all about Owen, his dodgy selling of the parsnips at the nightclub, the bridge he built to get to the parsnips and the scrap he had with the parsnip farmer. I’ve just finished level 1 of SAy Something in Welsh and it’s great but I do wish there was a transcript as sometimes I find it hard to decipher what they are saying.
As well as Owen the pannas perp I like the dragon who is moving to Swansea when he retires Grin.

Yes of course to those that asked, all welsh-adjacent and welsh-admirers welcome!

I think a name non-Welsh (speakers) would recognise would be good? Less exciting but more likely to draw in people who want advice on moving here? There's quite a lot of threads like that. So I'd probably be dull and go with Welshnet or the like - or I liked the original suggestion of Ddraig / Dragon

GogLais · 08/07/2021 20:20

Draig is better than Ddraig, but Draignet looks too much like Dragnet

GogLais · 08/07/2021 20:21

Sgwrsnet?

joopy79 · 08/07/2021 20:34

Syniad gwych!

Akire · 08/07/2021 20:35

Poor MNHQ will have been on google translate duties all day Grin

Fangdango · 08/07/2021 20:37

Could have a pub name like the Red Dragon (stunning originality I know. But a pity to waste the dragon)

Thehouseofmarvels · 08/07/2021 20:41

I'm only a little bit Welsh ( Welsh great grandparent) but that little bit is very patriotic. I have Welsh speaking relatives in Wales still so hopefully that counts for something :) I'd love to join !

QuiltedBear · 09/07/2021 08:00

Another vote for draignet (or whatever else it ends up being called).

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/07/2021 10:33

Tip for anyone learning Welsh or wanting to learn Welsh is watch Pobol Y Cwm with English subtitles - they have even had a Welsh learner as a character on there! You can watch it live on S4C or catchup online via S4C Clic.

Not if you want to be understood by us gogs

I agree with PP cwtch is not a word we use up here in the armpit

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/07/2021 10:36

We'll all argue so much that there will be two welsh boards started and some of us will avoid one of the threads and thats when we know its truly welsh, cant have a welsh village without two chapels and one of them is to be avoided at all costs Grin

GogLais · 09/07/2021 10:39

@JustAnotherPoster00, see my post above. It's cwtsh not cwtch. I'm a gog too, and the implication that it is a special word irritates me.

Cwmderi has quite a diverse range of accents for the Valleys.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 09/07/2021 18:03

Taffnet?

But YY anyway! I like the suggestion of a pub name Y Ddraig Goch / The Red Dragon (please, please tell me this isn't different up North !)

wigjuice · 09/07/2021 18:52

Yes

GogLais · 09/07/2021 19:02

I can't think of a single pub called Y Ddraig Goch, Most seem to have english names like Red Lion or Kings Head.

Maybe something like WelshNet might be better.

How do you define welshness?

To some it will be by parentage, some by being born in Wales, and others by fluency in the language.

I don't like taffnet either. FWIW, I'm welsh by parentage, birthplace and mother tongue, but I'm a Gog.

110APiccadilly · 09/07/2021 19:56

@JustAnotherPoster00 Clearly we need a Gognet Grin. (Goes off muttering about how Machynlleth is really the capital...)

DerisorySnort · 09/07/2021 20:44

Out of interest, if people from north Wales are 'gogs', what do you call my adoptive people here in South Wales?
