Weird letter received

Thegirlthatwanted2begod · 06/07/2021 20:47

DH received this letter in the post today in a used NHS envelope that was stuck down with sellotape. Both of us are stumped to why it's been sent as I've googled and Mankind doesn't look to be part of NHS and the number is correct but the message on the letter has freaked us out,

has anyone ever had anything similar to this?

It looks like recycled paper that NHS used.
I would be inclined to think that your husband had an affair at work.

comebacksunshines · 07/07/2021 11:43

@TellingBone

You can't just reuse a prepaid envelope by sticking it back down and shoving it in the pillar box. Royal Mail would need to collect postage.

You can reuse such envelopes but they need a postage stamp.

They don’t. If it’s has pre paid code on it then the NHS will get invoiced every time it’s used. I’ve known people to write the freepost code on their mail, to save money.
Firstruleofsoupover · 07/07/2021 11:44

Can I just mention a thing, that letter looks as though it's been through a few different hands ie a bit crumpled but also it has been folded text side outwards. Most people will fold the other way if its going into an envelope. Is it possible it came onto the doormat without an envelope, text side outwards, and not P&C protected at all, and one of your neighbours has pondered what to do and stuck it in a P&C NHS envelope and slipped it back into the post pile rather than get into weirdness by slipping it under your door etc.

I feel annoyed on your behalf OP, the sender is spiteful or it could be a prank or dare in which case sender is just thoughtless and immature.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 07/07/2021 11:46

is it not worth checking any cctv your flats may have as the person could have handed posted it?

AryaStarkWolf · 07/07/2021 11:46

@Standrewsschool

Could it be a letter campaign sent from the organisation,, possibly a mail shot?
That says "leave your abuser and come back to me xx" - I doubt it
fdgdfgdfgdfg · 07/07/2021 11:47

I reckon you've got someone with mental health issues going round posting these to lots of people.

The letter says "Male VictimS of domestic abuse" - plural

I reckon you've got the female equivalent of an incel or "nice guy" who thinks the reason they can't get a man is because they're all with abusive wives, and if only they realised and left them then they'd have a chance.

It's really not difficult to get hold of someones name and address, there are hundreds of data breaches every year and the data ends up on the net for anyone to find and download.

Sites like 192 .com have address searches on them based on electoral roll data, you have to pay for the full address but it can be as little as 50p.

Its likely theres a fair few people in your area with a very confusing letter right now

SpeakingFranglais · 07/07/2021 11:48

I think it’s a nutter OP.

We have received the odd weird letter in the 22 years we have been here and a friends husband received a long rambling letter of nonsense addressed to him and she lives 15 miles from us so clearly a different person with problems.

Inthesameboatatmo · 07/07/2021 11:49

It certainly is weird op.
Keep it incase anymore turn up ,but I would keep in mind possible affair/emotional affair with a colleague.
It's just too coincidental that he works for the nhs and its arrived on nhs paper and in nhs envelope.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 07/07/2021 11:51

@singlehun

Young people don't use capitals and they wouldnt use UR or 2.... that's an older person who's typed that...
They likely copied and pasted the text and phone number directly from the Mankind Initiative website.

The Mankind Initiative landing page starts with this text:

Male Victims of Domestic Abuse – Please call 01823 334244...

which is identical to the wording and use of caps and in the letter received by the OP.

If you are convinced it has been written on NHS paper (which you think must indicate that it originates from an NHS employee), why would an NHS employee send or deliver it using a used NHS envelope stuck down with Sellotape?

An unused envelope would look a lot more convincing than a previously used envelope?

As multiple posters have already said - just about every adult in the country will have used NHS envelopes lying around from C-19 vaccine invitations.

TheVampiresWife · 07/07/2021 12:05

I think prank, too. Seriously shit one, though.

DogInATent · 07/07/2021 12:08

Re-used envelope.

Given that it's addressed to Mr Surname a possible scenario is that there's another Mr Surname who's recently left Ms Bunny Boiler and gone non-contact. Ms Boiler has misidentified your Mr Surname as her Mr Surname using the phone book or another source of addresses. It's more than a bit stalkerish.

Slightly worrying is the possibility it's been hand delivered - although as already mentioned, you could easily put a reused envelope through the normal postage channels. Maybe they hoped you'd get charged for the due postage.

I'd have a word with the local Police station and get their advice.

comebacksunshines · 07/07/2021 12:09

It's not necessarily NHS paper, most public sector businesses use recycled paper to keep costs down. Its just cheap paper that can be bought by anyone.

MadeForThis · 07/07/2021 12:09

Come back 2 me is clearly designed to imply another woman. Especially with the xx at the end.

happinessischocolate · 07/07/2021 12:10

@whynotwhatknot

no point calling the number its genuinel mankind they wont tell you anything
But if it isn't personal and some nutter has done quite a few of them, then Mankind need to know.

Do you not think this is a simple joke but just not very funny?

It's hard to fathom what the motivation would be, given that the 'joker' won't witness any of the results.
JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 07/07/2021 12:22

Probably irrelevant, but did the name and address sit perfectly in the plastic window? I would have no idea how to line that up so it fits while typing it out. Seems incongruously professional compared to the text speak.

user1471600850 · 07/07/2021 12:29

They probably don't care, they just know it would probably cause some kind of reaction. Think about the horrible people that post abuse on social media - they don't witness the pain or results of their post but they know it will cause something. it is not from the NHS or mankind - they would never send anything so unprofessional out. It just happens that the person who did this happened to use an NHS envelope - it could just have easily have been a Southern Water envelope!

BadNomad · 07/07/2021 12:31

I bet it's from your MIL.

SantasCat · 07/07/2021 12:34

Those blue envelopes are for the Covid vaccination campaign only. Someone has received their vaccine appointment in it and reused the envelope.

Not so difficult to achieve. They could have used the original letter that had come in the NHS envelope as a guide for setting the margin width and the address start line.

Addresses (depending on how long you have been living at that address) can be found on 192, UK Phone Book (if not ex directory), planning applications etc.

If it were me, I don't think I'd take it to the police. But I would handle the letter and envelope as little as possible, seal it in a poly bag and keep it somewhere safe in case you receive any other letters.

yellowsubmarines · 07/07/2021 12:44

it could just have easily have been a Southern Water envelope!

But that would be a clue to the sender though, that they live within the catchment of X water company or have access to someone who lives within that catchment area. Sending an NHS envelope that most of the entire UK population received is more mysterious as it means the sender could be absolutely anywhere (unless it was in fact hand delivered meaning the sender is nearby which is worrying).

I still think phone the non-emergency police and Mankind just to alert them to the letter and ask if anyone else has reported receiving something similar. They might say 'no' and that's the end of it but OP might find 3 or 4 other Mr. SameSurname in the Greater area of OP'stown have phoned this morning asking the same question.
The fact the letter could have been hand delivered would worry me and if more weird things keep happening then at least the police will have a log of it even if they do nothing else.

LuxOlente · 07/07/2021 12:48

Don't bother ringing the charity, they're not in on the joke.

Make a joke that you're disappointed he had an affair with someone who uses 'ur' and 'xxx' and just forget it for now. He should be the one wondering who's trying to blow up his life - though, with all the skill and panache of a 10 year old girl.

It could even just be teens who would think this would be funny.

If the charity says 'Yes, our phone line has been alive all week with people saying they've received the same sort of letter', it will help OP to have a better idea of what's happening. OP should tell them about it, in case they can give her that info, and because that info might be useful to others.
