Just marvelling at my soda stream. We used to buy SO much sparkling water the amount of plastic was dreadful. I'm so glad I bought it! has really made life better.

Also my quartz worktops.... was a splurge but bloody hell my kitchen is a beautiful place to be now. I can't stop looking at them!

@FoodologistGirl

Also cat insurance. Our old boy had nose cancer a few years ago that cost £1,500 for surgery and recently been diagnosed with liver cancer with tests costing over £2,000. We’ve used up this years allowance and know he’s only got a matter of time, but he’s happy and we are prepared for the end.
I wholeheartedly agree. Our girl was poisoned at 18 months old. Vets fees came to just over £6k. No way we could have afforded her treatment without the insurance.
@MonsteraMother please can you tell me the company you got the cabin from?
Tuin
We got this one but it was £3700 when we bought it in 2019.

Not mine but my mums travel insurance. She was on a world trip with my dad to New Zealand for grandsons wedding when she had a stroke in Bangkok. They paid the thousands for her hospital stay and 1st class treatment, the hotel my dad and later my sister had to stay in for weeks, the first class fights home with a nurse and a refund on the stopovers they missed out on. Because she was so well taken care of quickly she’s recovered very well. ALWAYS GET TRAVEL INSURANCE.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/07/2021 23:21

My car - it's a sporty, shiny, red thing and I love it.
My garden: I got a fence moved to enclose more of my land, and I have a much better flower bed as a result.
A garden shelter. I can sit outside even when it's raining and enjoy it.
My hot tub (it's an inflatable one so not ridiculously expensive). I can't even begin to tell everyone how much I enjoy it. I'm not noisy - I only have music or bubbles early in the evening, but I get in it and any pain I'm in melts away.

SleepyMathematician · 06/07/2021 23:25

@BirdsandBeesmakinghay

This is so sobering for me. I don’t have insurance for my cat.
We never insured ours because we had four dogs and a cat at one point and it was prohibitive, but we put money aside and said we would pay for any treatment we needed.

There have been dribs and drabs over the years but it was sorely tested last year when our dog became ill and over the space of a couple of months we racked up the best part of £6000. I don’t regret the decision to save instead - we knew it was a gamble - and I certainly don’t regret spending that money on my beloved dog who I’m so grateful to have extra time with.
But if you don’t have insurance you need to save, and hard.

In no particular order:

 1. My memory foam mattress (tempur)
 2. Roomba robot vacuum (life changing; purchased 9 years ago and still going strong)
 3. My psychotherapist. Finally dealing with complex childhood trauma and becoming freer by the minute. Really good timing as going through marital breakup too.
LockedFarAway · 06/07/2021 23:34

@lop124

Heated under blanket for my bed. I absolutely love it.

A boot/shoe dryer for wet shoes. Has two little prongs that blow warm air into the shoes and cost £25. I can dry my sons' wet rugby boots in 10-20 mins rather than having eau de rugby boot percolate through my house trying to dry them on the radiators.

Oohh... never seen this before, what's it called? (mother of boys that play rugby!)
ArrrMeHearties · 06/07/2021 23:35

£80 to adopt my ddog in 2012 who gave me the most incredible 8yrs of love and loyalty. Lost him in October and miss him every day 🌈

Money for lessons, my driving test and my car. Best feeling ever being able to jump in the car and go wherever I want with ds. The beach if its sunny and just being able to go for messages when it's raining is priceless

Onestep2021 · 06/07/2021 23:38

@Howshouldibehave if you have time please could you tell me which fan you bought that you liked...

LockedFarAway · 07/07/2021 00:17

@RandomCatGenerator

Noise cancelling headphones. I used to do a lot of international travel for work and they’re just such a godsend to make flights bearable. You can just totally block out everything around you and watch a film or go to sleep.

Which ones do you have?

LockedFarAway · 07/07/2021 00:20

@garlictwist

Sounds stupid but ear defenders! I love them. Wear them when reading in the garden so I can't hear the road/neighbours or when other half is watching tv and I want some peace. Sometimes even sleep in them as we live in a big student area so there's always a lot of parties and drunk people and night. Game changing.

Which ones do YOU use?! (I asked a previous user too!)

ILikeBiscuits · 07/07/2021 00:43

I had laser hair removal (brazillian and armpits) and its all grown back since lockdown - kind of wonder why I wasted the money.

@mam0918, I’m sorry to read that. I have pale skin and dark hair, which is meant to be ideal for laser. Do you have less contrast between your skin and hair? Also, I was told that it would take 6 sessions, with several weeks between each one. Did you have that many?

(Actually I only had 4 or 5 sessions as the clinic closed down, but they were generous with a part-refund as I’d paid for it all in advance.)

I have the palest skin (irish with pretty much no pigment and a blue/silver undertone) and suprisingly dark leg, eyebrow, eyelash, ampit and pubic hair (the only one in my whole family who isnt white blonde from head to toe, never understood how as even my kids are completely blonde).

I was classed as a pefect candidate too, I had 5 of 6 sessions 6 weeks apart and couldnt have the 6th due to lockdown.

The hair on my armpits still grew but it turned thin downey fluffy blonde for quite a while (over a year - like the bumfluff teen boys get on their lip) but has started coming back now.

I saw little change at all in the brazillian area at any point, the hair is maybe very slightly sparcer on the stomach but its still dark and grows just as much and theres zero change to the inner thigh and majora area.

I now just use veet hair removal.

My divorce 😖

Marriedatfirstyear · 07/07/2021 11:04

Over £15k I've spent to stay in the UK legally. Multiple rejected application fees, solicitor fees etc. Have been here over 20 years but have another 5 years before I can apply for indefinite leave. That's at least another 7k to magic out of somewhere.
Wish I could say IVF as ttc but can't afford it and time not on our side. Fingers crossed it will happen naturally 🙌.

CatrinVennastin · 07/07/2021 11:19

@bluelemming

I am seriously considering a breast reduction. Do you have any advice?

Marriedatfirstyear · 07/07/2021 11:22

Howshouldibehave

Marriedatfirstyear
Cotton bedding, don't know how I managed before.

What was your bedding made out of before?

@Howshouldibehave,
I had a synthetic sheet and a fleece blanket for on top. 😅

QueenOfCakeandCoffee · 07/07/2021 15:03

@CatrinVennastin there is a brilliant group on Facebook called breast reduction U.K. which has so much advice and help.

Excellent re wool duvet, just bought one today. Blurb even says useful for people experiencing night sweats. That's me!

40% sale on too Grin and natural but animal friendly.

I've just been looking at those. Everything about them sounds perfect but they look so thin! I do love the cloud like feeling of a new cheapy duvet. How do you get used to that?
Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 07/07/2021 18:49

Philips lumea. I never believed it would actually work but now I only need to shave every 6 weeks! Used to be daily.

Galaxyinmypocket · 07/07/2021 18:51

Polkadots2021 · 07/07/2021 19:27

Back massager, omg. Amazing.

mineofuselessinformation · 07/07/2021 19:29

Need to add:
My tens machine. Great for when my back muscles go into spasm as it means they can relax again!

MilesOrOscar · 07/07/2021 19:44

@Scaredycat87

Don’t have sparkling water Worse for your teeth than sweets As my dentist said

Me? My robo vac. No hesitation

Your dentist is wrong. Carbonated water does not damage teeth, check current research! (I’m a dentist).
MilesOrOscar · 07/07/2021 19:49

My two wonderful dogs, they’re the best thing ever!

My car, I love driving!

My house, it’s beautiful in a beautiful area and it makes me so very happy

My professional spray tan gun, my DH ‘tans’ me every week and I get so many compliments and people asking me where I’ve been. It just makes me feel good to have a lovely golden tan

My four capped teeth 🦷 😁
