Yesterday I got talking to the lovliest man (at a clinic we were attending, not in a pub sadly) and I remembered how nice I’ve always found American men.

So I’ve decided I’d quite like one please, and I need you folks to help me find one. Any and all suggestions carefully considered :)

I’m so pleased I started this thread! You’re all full of good ideas and no one (yet) has had a go at me for being superficial or racist or shallow or some such!

The air bases near me are Lakenheath and Mildenhall. A lot of Americans live off base, so driving around Lakenheath and Mildenhall and the surrounding villages, the house are English countryside meets US. Pop into a Tesco express or any shop in these areas and you’ll find one. However, there isn’t much to do in Lakenheath or Mildenhall. So in addition to Bury St Edmunds, you’ll also find them in Thetford forest and sometimes in Thetford town. You can spot the Americans usually by their cars - a lot have the standard (massive) pickup truck, others will prefer a US saloon car. Some still have their US plates on which makes them easy to spot. Otherwise I guess hang around near pickups (maybe check the CCTV layout first though)? The only downside to hanging around a pickup in East Anglia is that you might get a Fen farmer instead Grin

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

🤣

I guess I could be your wingwoman.
but you'll have to wait until the schools break up for summer.

I’ll wait - not long now :)

Come to Dublin, we have them in quantity.

I work right by the big tech offices (Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok) and it’s wall-to-wall employed Americans. Most seem to be gym-goers. And well groomed. With nice teeth.

Americam · 01/07/2021 15:06

Thank you @TipsySquirrel, that’s really helpful, esp the bit about not mistakenly going for a fen farmer!

Go hang out at Benson RAF
There's a 24 hour Mac Donald's which they seem to frequent and a nearby pub 😂😂😂

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/07/2021 15:11

I thought of another one. The American Memorial Chapel in St. Paul's Cathedral. That's on nearly every American's must visit list for London, especially people with a forces connection.

BrilliantBetty · 01/07/2021 15:13

I met an incredible American man once. I would recommend. He was from Denver and an excellent lover.

Met in London (Mayfair) I was on an awful night out with horrible ex-friends, he left his phone on the table in a bar, I ran after him to give it back. Decided to walk with him along the street, how desperate was that in hindsight, we ended up spending the next three days together before he left for a conference in Austria. He did call when he was back in London but I ignored it (REGRET).

Good luck to you OP!! Suggest hanging around the US Embassy, there must be a pub close by

I actually have never been to St Paul’s which is shocking considering I don’t live that far away from London. I’m going to do that for sure, and not just in search of American men! Thank you @SenecaFallsRedux.

You need to hang around Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury and Thetford. Or there's a British American Football League that a lot of them play in so have a look at the teams based in the aforementioned areas and spectate at them or volunteer for them. DH is American and we are friends with lots of Americans here.

Americam · 01/07/2021 15:15

Oh @BrilliantBetty that’s romantic and sad both at the same time. Why did you ignore his call?

Putting US embassy on my list ….

When you go, dab a bit of pumpkin pie spice behind your ears. That’ll reel ‘em in! Grin

I love this thread.

Americam · 01/07/2021 15:17

Thank you @KenAdams. You don’t know any suitable single Americans do you - save me doing a lot of potentially dodgy looking hanging around?!

Also, don't be put off by baseball caps, but do pay close attention to what sort of logo is on the cap. College sports teams, fine (likely went there, so educated). Professional sports teams, also fine and a good indicator of where they are from. Anything to do with golf, also probably fine. Political affiliations, be wary.

Americam · 01/07/2021 15:24

I will be exceedingly wary of political affiliations - thank you!

I live in Scottish town renowned for its golf and the place is usually teeming with American men. There are fewer around at the moment with Covid and all that but it's worth bearing in mind if your other avenues fail to secure you a worthy man. The ones here are generally middle aged with paunches and bad taste in knitwear. How fussy are you?

Nancydrawn · 01/07/2021 15:33

Join the Rotary Club (such unobjectionable ideals: education, clean water, eradication of polio).

Visit a southern city (if that's what you want) with a large older population, e.g. Savannah or Charleston.

Go to Rotary Club meeting as guest.

Speak in British accent.

Voila.

I’m very easy to please @ApolloandDaphne but I think dodgy knitwear might be one step too far …

The Open golf is on here next year. Come up and stay with me and we can see if we can bag you a rich professional golfer? They make better choices with their knitwear on the whole.

Papillon33 · 01/07/2021 15:42

🤣 @TipsySquirrel yes, avoid Fenland farmers! Better to avoid Lakenheath and Mildenhall, just in case 😆

HandlebarLadyTash · 01/07/2021 15:46

Keanu is mine

Oh yes. We had to wait in a line of mostly American men having their photo taken on the Swilcan Bridge, most of them doing the Jack Nicklaus wave, so DH could do the same. He has excellent taste in knitwear, however.
