Should We Change of National Anthem

Should we still sing God Save the Queen for England? God Save the Queen is rolled out for the monarch and for the UK, but Scotland and Wales have their own anthems. Shouldn't England have its own? It was really obvious when England played Scotland in the Euros. We had Scotland the Brave and then God Save the Queen, which also applies to Scotland (if you only use the first verse).

How about Jerusalem?

I'm in favour of abolishing the monarchy, so would support 'God Save the Queen' being retired. I'd choose 'Land of Hope and Glory' as a replacement.

Jerusalem works if the move is to an anthem for each of the 4 UK nations but I think we should still have a UK-wide one.

The one we have is fine, has suited for hundreds of years.

England are welcome to it. The Welsh national anthem is far superior.

Yeah, it would be nice for a UK one for the times when it's a GB team.

I'm a complete monarchist, so would keep GStQ for the UK.

I’m happy with the anthem while the queen is on the throne, but when the others take it I think we should change.

I'm a monarchist but feel Jerusalem / land of hope and glory would just sound better.

@PurpleDaisies Land of my Fathers is beautiful, but saying that it's better than GStQ isn't really saying much. I'll stand every time for it, but it's not a thing of great beauty.

No Scot or Welsh person minds. I can guarantee that. We’re proud of our anthems.

I agree England should have something like Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory.

I'm Welsh so we have ours.

Thing is the monarch is the UK monarch so when England sing it just for them good save "our" gracious queen/king....well she/he isn't technically yours 😂

God save the queen is a miserable dirge.

@MaleficentsCrow Yes! That's what I was thinking. The Queen is ruler of more than just England. I think Princess Anne would have been shouting for Scotland in the Euros, and it should have been eg Jerusalem and Scotland the Brave. Or they could have just played GStQ for both.

Lane of Hope and Glory is very much about the British Empire, so I don’t think it solves the problem for England.

@Chemenger I always associate it with the madness of the Proms. I have a soft spot for Jerusalem.

You do know that the dark satanic mills of Jerusalem are churches? The monarch is the head of state and head of the church of England - to replaced God Save the Queen/King with Jerusalem could be seen as completely inappropriate.

I have to say, as someone who can't sing for toffee, I'd love the opportunity to caterwaul:

'Bring me my spear: O, clouds unfold!'

and be thought patriotic rather than a nuisance!

Yes, Land of Hope and Glory is rather, erm, imperialist. All about expanding the map-width of the British Crown.

If we abolished the monarchy, the monarch would presumably relinquish the CofE role and it would go to (e.g.) the Archbishop of Canterbury.

@Housewife2010 no, I missed it! What happened. I mean, it's not exactly sensitive to the current cultural situation so I suppose it was only a matter of time before something happened.

I remember a Billy Connolly skit where he proposed changing it to the archers theme...

Thing is Scotland sing about being brave, Ireland standing together, Wales our poetry and our song.

England....oh The queen... I feel for you guys it's not very uplifting.
