Should We Change of National Anthem

Should we still sing God Save the Queen for England? God Save the Queen is rolled out for the monarch and for the UK, but Scotland and Wales have their own anthems. Shouldn't England have its own? It was really obvious when England played Scotland in the Euros. We had Scotland the Brave and then God Save the Queen, which also applies to Scotland (if you only use the first verse).

How about Jerusalem?

@H1978 I was just thinking how much nicer the German national anthem was, even though I would say I was pretty patriotic and very monarchist.

The German, French and US anthems are all much catchier and uplifting than GSTQ. I agree with pp who described it as a 'dirge'.

@toffeebutterpopcorn given the state of the government, it could be the Benny Hill theme tune. I'd risk Jerusalem instead.

There are lots of objections to I vow to thee my country too. It's a minefield. I think you could have a national vote and we'd end up keeping God Save the Queen. Incidentally, Liechtenstein has the same anthem. Well, it's the same tune.

The trouble is, a National Anthem should glorify a country and praise the great exploits of its past. We've invaded everywhere.

Scotland and Wales have their own anthems

No they don't, they have their own football songs. They don't have a separate national anthem any more than Cumbria does.

If England wants a different football song, I do like Jerusalem. I suppose it does seem odd that a regional team uses the national anthem.

England, my home, my heart ... (next line, tag team please - no rules with ‘fart’ though)

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow It's also the anthem for the WI. I don't think either would necessarily disqualify it. All I'm saying is a decent tune for England that leaves GStQ for the UK

How about just changing the words to God Save the Queen?

Rather than Jerusalem, how about "I Vow to thee my country"? That is a fabulous stirring hymn.

The Coronation Street theme is even more dirgy and downbeat than GSTC!

It was composed to sum up the gritty kitchen-sink nature of Coronation Street when it first started.

If we have to have a soap theme, EastEnders is catchier.

I haven't been watching the football, so have missed the anthems... have we Scots actually switched to Scotland the Brave from Flower of Scotland? When did that happen?
