Should We Change of National Anthem

Should we still sing God Save the Queen for England? God Save the Queen is rolled out for the monarch and for the UK, but Scotland and Wales have their own anthems. Shouldn't England have its own? It was really obvious when England played Scotland in the Euros. We had Scotland the Brave and then God Save the Queen, which also applies to Scotland (if you only use the first verse).

How about Jerusalem?

I like Italy's which changes tempo halfway through 🤣. The French anthem is rousing too. Ours is...meh.

We should have a Song Contest by top musicians and vote on the best one...

Frankley · 29/06/2021 18:07

I am puzzled that folks want Jerusalem. Why would we want to build Jerusalem or any other foreign city in England's green and pleasant land.

Tyredofallthis1 · 29/06/2021 18:09

@Frankley I think it's more about wanting spears and arrows and a good sing rather than the City of God.

While we still have a Monarch and a United Kingdom we can keep GSTQ for the UK (I suspect both will be gone in my lifetime and I'm 52!) but England needs their own anthem (as does Northern Ireland) Scotland use Flower of Scotland btw not Scotland the Brave OP

@toffeebutterpopcorn Trooping the Colour
rum tee tiddle dee um.
the Queen la la la la la la la.
Best bit was when he mentioned the line 'rebellious Scots to crush'
'oh! you bloody think so?!'

HalzTangz · 29/06/2021 18:13

Weren't people complaining that 'land of hope and glory' contained racist terminology

MargaretThursday · 29/06/2021 18:19

There's always the Flanders and Swan suggested anthem

I think they described it as guaranteed to offend everyone...

But I do think that for football matches the verse they ought to use is:
^And all the world over, each nation's the same
They've simply no notion of playing the game
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won
And they practise beforehand, which ruins the fun!^

donquixotedelamancha · 29/06/2021 18:22

Think England should have their name own national anthem. There should be 5. One for each of the 4 nations, and one for when the nations play as Great Britain.

Yeah, every club could have it's own national anthem.

Crankley · 29/06/2021 18:22

No

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 18:24

Where I live it's little sung any way. But I don't much like the alternative.

HalzTangz · 29/06/2021 18:25

Just adapt the anthem

God save our precious team,
Long live our England dream,
God save the team!
Send them to be victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign in those goals,
God save the team.

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter our opposite sides,
And make them lose,
Confound their goals,
Frustrate their knavish kicks,
On Thee our hops to score,
God save the team.

Not in this pitch alone,
But be England's mercies known,
From Goal to goal,
Lord make the nations see,
That men should be scorers,
And form England,
England to win.

I am puzzled that folks want Jerusalem. Why would we want to build Jerusalem or any other foreign city in England's green and pleasant land.

I like the tune. We could change it to somewhere that makes more sense:

'....til we have built Milton Keynes, in England's green and pleasant land'

Can we all agree on 'Milton Keynes' to the tune of Jerusalem as the football song and delegate one of us to let the football people know it's sorted?

HalzTangz · 29/06/2021 18:29
@JassyRadlett we've been the cause of resistance/struggle/triumph songs (qv Flower of Scotland). I suppose it's a question of what is sung when the pubs are chucking out.
That's easy,they all sing 3 lions lol

Tyredofallthis1 · 29/06/2021 18:31

@HalzTangz lol! It should go in the next programme.

@donquixotedelamancha go for it

Can anyone think of words to the Seven Nation Army riff? It's just being belted out as England scored.

AngeloMysterioso · 29/06/2021 18:37

I’d rather have a national anthem that is actually about the country. Not just one person.

PartTimeLegend · 29/06/2021 18:45

Both Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory are already used as alternatives at some other sporting events when England are competing.

The words to the national anthems of some other countries might be viewed as questionable when you look at them in the context of the 21st century - just look at the translation of Le Marseillaise. I wonder how the French feel about theirs?

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 19:04

And the question has to be asked, is there such a thing as a 'national' anthem. An anthem that connects all 4 constituent parts of this increasingly fragile nation of ours. Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem might appeal in England, for Scotland, Wales, NI?

SpanielRadcliffe · 29/06/2021 19:19

Is "I Vow to Thee, My Country" specifically English? Given that it was written at the beginning of the 20th century and set to music after the First World War, I always assumed the "country" referenced was the UK. (Not that I mind England using it for football, particularly, either way.)

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 19:33

I Vow To Thee My Country is the Edwardian expression of Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori, or as Wilfred Owen said, the old lie. Does any country want that as their anthem? Have we learned nothing?

Lemonmelonsun · 29/06/2021 19:35

It's miserable I can't understand why our natinal anthem isn't Jerusalem? It's so so so so much more inspiring to sing..

Bring me my bow... Of burning gold, bring me my arrows of desire...

Lemonmelonsun · 29/06/2021 19:38

It doesn't mean actual Jerusalem?

It's what Jerusalem represents like the holy grail.. The most precious place.

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 19:38

Yes, Lemon, if you are English. There are other songs for the devolved nations.

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 19:41

Jerusalem was written by Willian Blake. It was a take down of what England was in the 19th century, in the Industrial revolution, how debased the country was, how debased ordinary peoples' lives had become.. It is not a peon to 'England'.
