Should We Change of National Anthem

Should we still sing God Save the Queen for England? God Save the Queen is rolled out for the monarch and for the UK, but Scotland and Wales have their own anthems. Shouldn't England have its own? It was really obvious when England played Scotland in the Euros. We had Scotland the Brave and then God Save the Queen, which also applies to Scotland (if you only use the first verse).

How about Jerusalem?

@PurpleDaisies my DH is welsh.
When we first got together, one weekend we were watching the rugby in bed. I'd never watched it before as it's football where I live and no one that I know watches rugby.

I said oh I know your national anthem and belted out swing low sweet chariot.

Am surprised he married me tbh. Shock

I have never stood up and sang God save the Queen in my entire adult life.

I would if they changed it to something I feel represented the nation and the people in it though.

I'm jealous of other countries with good national anthems.

It is about creating heaven in England. The dark satanic mills are mentioned, but it was about creating a paradise.

I agree England should have a separate anthem in addition to the UK one. However it will never be possible to find a sufficiently politically correct, really sorry about all that, socially acceptable song that the average people in the street will still view as English and actually want to sing with pride and enjoyment the way that Wales and Scotland get to belt out their theme tunes.

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2021 20:12

'Sufficiently politically correct'. God help us. You have not the slightest concept of the country you live in. Go ahead, create your own English song for pride and enjoyment. You wonder why Wales, NII and Scotland are increasingly scunnered by you. We, to you, just don't exist.

FreezerBird · 29/06/2021 20:13

I Vow to Thee my Country is an appalling hymn. Pledging love that asks no questions is probably an early step on the way to becoming a guard in a death camp.

I think the French have already won the national anthem war.

Google the lyrics in English - it is, frankly, terrifying. Grin

Am Scottish. FoS is okay, but come indy, I'd quite like something a bit less dirgey. 'Freedom Come All Ye' is nice, but a bit wordy.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2021 20:49

I do love the tune to Jerusalem and I’m not even English.

Maybe just make it David Bowie’s Heroes and be done with it.

Lemonmelonsun · 29/06/2021 20:51

Jerusalem is about bad things becoming good.. Raising up of ideals, spirits and being "better".

It's also about religious figure possibly visiting some site in UK...

But the spirit of the song is about raising our aims and ideals

Which is perfect.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2021 20:56

I think the French have already won the national anthem war.

There isn’t even any competition is there?

My own national anthem is the reasonably unsingable Advance Australia Fair, which I love anyway and has recently recently had a word or two changed. We’ve only had it officially since 1984. You can do this, England!

(My vote is Land of Hope and Glory with some lyrics changed. Jerusalem’s range is worse than Advance Australia Fair’s, and the lyrics need too much butchery. Keep it as your Unofficial One With Weirdly Inappropriate Lyrics, like we’ve got the one about a dead sheep thief.)

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/06/2021 21:05

Haven't RTFT but England should keep GStQ/K and team GB should get Rule Britannia. It's much better and many Scottish people aren't particularly royalist (except for the Queen Mum GodBlessHer).

AlexaShutUp · 29/06/2021 21:12

Well, I don't believe in God or the monarchy, so God save the queen is never going to do it for me!Grin

However, I'd prefer the current shite over land of hope and glory, which is far too closely associated with the more shameful aspects of our history.

Although it's a bit religious for my taste, I do love Jerusalem, and it would definitely be preferable to what we have got. Alternatively, we could commission a brand new one?!
