Flowers Frogs

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 20/07/2021 01:04

Thank you @Silkiecats. It had a good innings for a freezer, I worked out how long I have had it. 10 years and 8 months, the shop I bought from is long gone. The average for those type is 10 years to 14 tops with frequent servicing. This was its 3rd house. So it will go off to the great recycling plant next week.

So I am the second of my friends whose freezer has died in less than a week. 1st friend discovered hers on Friday morning when she went to get cocktail sausages out of the freezer to get ready for her child birthday party 2 hours later. He is 3 and was having playgroup / cousins to play in the garden, so she lost all her party food but 3 of us went off in different directions and got a load of stuff that sorted her out. She has had a few weeks from hell atm so it's good to be able to help each other.

When I sent a message out this morning about my freezer, I got 4 messages straight back if I needed freezer space where and who had storage. It's good to know who has your back.

Is my withering on about my freezer suitable levels of dull.

MissConductUS · 20/07/2021 01:44

@HelenaJustina, you don't go in complaining of a cold, you present with persistent sinus pain and complain of an infection.

frogs, your freezer tale is perfect and we are grateful to be soothed by its dullness. I have an upright freezer in the garage we bought in 2006, so I guess it's on borrowed time. It's a Frigidaire, which I've always had good luck with. Frost-free to boot.

DS received his new credit card in the post today, with a much higher credit limit than he was expecting. DS was chuffed. DH had a talk with him about the perils of credit cards that unchuffed him a bit. Grin

That's lovely you help each other out Frogs We had no freezer for a year or so here but now have a small one - DS is a cocktail sausage monster and ice cream also never lasts long enough to need a freezer here. Glad the 3 year old had a nice birthday with your help. When my DS was 3 he loved the birthday cake and food so much he used to say not to invite anyone apart from him and me so I won't need to share my chocolate cake. Grin

mathanxiety · 20/07/2021 04:31

We had a hot and sticky day here, and the sun set like a neon tomato in a peach coloured sky, so tomorrow is likely to be as hot if not hotter, and sticky.

I bought two bags of Barilla dried tortellini on Sunday, which are quick and easy to cook in the furnace that is my kitchen, and we can toss them with veggies.

Commiserations on the freezer woes, NotanotherboxofFrogs. I no longer have one but miss the one I had.

HelenaJustina, if you can lay your hands on Alka Seltzer COLD remedy in the UK, try some. I emphasise cold because I once made the mistake of buying the Alka Seltzer formulation for indigestion and wondered why it tasted so horrible and had no effect whatsoever on my cold. Summer colds really suck.

DH has had antibiotics for a sinus infection here though he has a much higher success rate than me of getting meds from doctors. One time we all went with identical symptoms and we all got single antibiotics, he got double. I queried this as we all had the same thing and the doctor said it was as DH symptoms were much worse from his description. Hmm Though DH then got sick from the double antibiotics so I was glad that time.

Frogs my sympathies re the freezer. We had similar several years ago with our chest freezer in the garage but managed to cram the contents into helpful friends' and neighbours' freezers until we could get a new one.

Then it happened again a couple of months back, but luckily we noticed before the freezer actually gave up the ghost (the alarm started beeping, although we turned it off and the temp seemed OK) and we took an executive decision that it was about to expire.

It was good that you managed to get a new one bought and delivered in a day, though, we couldn't find anywhere that could do that.

Squirrel26 · 20/07/2021 10:00

I absolutely hate defrosting the freezer and it usually takes me several weeks to work up to doing it. Kudos, @NotanotherboxofFrogs for sorting yours so quickly.

Mine is also beautiful, @HelenaJustina, (palomino), but wow is he stubborn Grin

Because he’s massively indulged (by me), he had physio as soon as he arrived back home. So now no doubt he thinks he’s some kind of elite equine athlete. He is not. Hmm

Nydj · 20/07/2021 12:32

Been away for a few days so lots to catch up on.

I’m so glad your recovery and progress after the operation has gone well @MissConductUS. Fantastic news @Sunbird24 - I will keep my fingers and toes crossed.
I’m sorry for those not feeling well and those having to isolate.
The freezer tales are lovely to read when it’s so very hot here.
I went for a walk this morning despite the heat - I may have to give myself a medal for this achievement.

zigzag56445 · 20/07/2021 13:36

First time poster to the thread. I'm sitting in the back garden under the parasol watching the butterflies and bees coming and going. Kids are inside because it's too hot out. Going to sit here as long as I can.

Silkiecats · 20/07/2021 14:09

Welcome back Nydj Have a 2020 Olympics heat walking medal from me, I couldn't do that. Welcome zigzag

29C here and awaiting thunderstorm, hoping it cools it down. Ordered 2 bedside tables. DH said he wanted some which means can I buy some. At least it will give him somewhere to keep his books and soft toy koala.

If it cools a bit I will carpet clean our carpet one final time.

DS is out of isolation and off to school, 2.5 days left incl today. DD is also at school with half blonde, half brown hair, I'm told its fashionable. Melanie someone. Confused Once schools ends the blonde half is going purple. DH says she looks like Cruella De Vil.

MissConductUS · 20/07/2021 14:28

Welcome, @zigzag56445, and thanks for joining and sharing your peaceful garden news. It's pretty hot in NY too. It's hazy today as well, which the National Weather Service blames on wildfires on the west coast.

It's great to see you Nydj. Well done on your walk. I did one two before I had to dig into email for the morning.

Thunder 🌩 😀

Sunbird24 · 20/07/2021 14:40

I’m sorry @Silkiecats, thunder is exciting!

Silkiecats · 20/07/2021 15:01

Now really heavy rain as well, sorry if that is too exciting. DS will be very happy he will be walking home in this in 5 mins and he loves rain.

Nydj · 20/07/2021 15:04

Oh a proper thunderstorm is very exciting - I am jealous.

Silkiecats · 20/07/2021 15:27

DS just arrived soaked from head to foot and its only a 5 min walk. He's just changed clothes. Now comes the lightening. Silkiecat is scared. DH is laughing at her. Poor Silkiecat.

This made me laugh.

HelenaJustina - I hope you feel better soon. I've never had sinus pain, thankfully, but when DH had it I was amazed by how it completely felled him. He actually needed two courses of antibiotics to clear it, and he saw two doctors and a dentist who all basically pingponged him from one to the other.

PhloxOfSheep · 20/07/2021 15:59

I've been enjoying these threads so much; I thought I'd pop on and contribute.

I've been sitting watching the jackdaws and pigeons eating all the seed from my bird table. We bought it a couple of months ago, with the intention of attracting some new garden birds. Robins, blackbirds, sparrows, blue tits and great tits are our regular visitors (although I haven't seen much of the latter two recently), but I was hoping to encourage some others to visit. I know I've seen long tailed tits twittering about somewhere.

This has failed spectacularly. Instead the local jackdaw gang and two very greedy pigeons clearly think it's a private buffet just for them. I'm equal parts irritated and amused by it.

Squirrel26 · 20/07/2021 16:02

Weirdly my friend messaged me the other day to ask how you tell the difference between pain from your teeth and your sinuses. I said it can be quite difficult (I’m helpful, me). She was going to the dentist yesterday. I should find out what happened.

Flagging a bit (it is 4pm after all so I’m basically counting down till bed time). Having a coffee.

Sunbird24 · 20/07/2021 16:06

Apparently you can tell it’s sinus pain if it gets worse when you tip your head forward

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/07/2021 16:25

Sunbird That is what my DGM told DM - she told me and I told DC - so it is tradition.
Another method is to tap a tuning fork and then position it on the sinus cavities. If it is them you will notice. That is a tip from our old HNO doctor.

OOps - HNO - hals nase ohren - throat nose ears

MissConductUS · 20/07/2021 16:33

Welcome, @PhloxOfSheep, and thanks for sharing your ornithological news. I had never heard of a bird table. We have a traditional hanging feeder outside our kitchen window that I've posted pictures of many times on this thread. One of the good things about it is that only two or three birds can perch there to eat at a time. I'm getting a lot of wrens, woodpeckers, and goldfinches these days.

It's always my right maxillary sinus that gets infected. A cold or allergies can bring it on as there is bacteria present in your sinuses all the time, but when they don't drain properly the bacteria take over. Normally they'd go down the GI tract and die an ignominious death in the stomach.

Dd returned also looking like a drowned rat, she said our village is flooded by 6 inches or so and the next village is flooded by more. Dss school have just sent an email to say they are flooded and will be partially shut tomorrow. Silkiecat is still looking round for rain in the house, she is very confuzzled as ds would say.
