Grin Scan on 10 Aug, so 🤞🤞. I’ve not yet managed to keep them growing that long yet

Champagneforeveryone · 17/07/2021 00:13

Tentative congratulations sunbird Flowers

MissConductUS · 17/07/2021 01:13

Well done, sunbird.😊

I just saw my first firefly of the summer in the front yard.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/07/2021 07:26

Firefly - Glühwürmchen - I would love to see one (or more).

We are still worried about the floods and the massive environmental consequences this has (past mistakes and future impact.) Luckily our friend has been in contact, he was not the one who drowned in his cellar and DSis home is as yet above the water line.

Sunbird24 · 17/07/2021 07:45

I was thinking of you when I was reading about the floods @Prokupatuscrakedatus. I’m glad your friend and DSis are ok.
There’s a lovely video of a group of local residents rescuing a firefighter who was being swept away by the rushing water, humanity can be rather good sometimes.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/07/2021 08:06

sunbird A lot of environmental and behavioural changes need to be made, but us humans generally prefer short term comforts and the 'everyday easy' solutions marketed at us.

On a less stressful note - I will now - reluctantly - do my housework .

HelenaJustina · 17/07/2021 08:11

Careful congratulations @Sunbird24 and commiserations @Prokupatuscrakedatus it is very shocking to see the footage.

In duller news, the cake is out of the oven and I’m going to go for a run while it is cooling.

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 18:21

It is very hot here today and hotter again tomorrow at 30C. This is far too hot for me but on Monday we get a thunderstorm Grin and cooler weather.

DH and DD are going to Pets at Home, Sainsburys and Home Bargains to get chicken food, hair dye for DD and some food for dinner. Tomorrow DD goes to London to meet with friends and DH which pick up the tumble drier I bought which has gone to Beckton.

DH wanted to know about Beckton. I looked it up and told him it has a sewerage works and a gas plant and looks very scenic.

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 18:22

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beckton

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 18:25

DH is sad as you have to quarantine for 10 days after France again as well as 10 million tests so he can't go anymore.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/07/2021 18:50

silkie Why is your drier gone to Beckton? Is this a location where tumble driers congregate to look for new homes?

Sorry for your DH!

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 18:59

Thanks Prok It was quite hard to get hold of the one we wanted and that was the nearest store. DH drives DD down to London anyway so its not that far more.

Though on Currys website it said 1 tumble drier could be downloaded. Not that would be perfect.

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 19:00

Not = now

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 19:02

Though once when looking for a chainsaw all the stores were out of stock for about 50 miles about from Walthamstow which had about 50 in stock. Confused

mathanxiety · 17/07/2021 19:14

I walked out to the local Farmer's Market this morning and bought a sourdough loaf, a pain au chocolate, and half a dozen delicious doughnuts. Plus half a gallon of unpasteureised apple cider. Next week I'll bring a bag and buy some local honey, and some zucchini (courgettes) to make ratatouille.

We've had fireflies here for a few weeks. It seems to me there used to be swarms of them, but they're few and far between now. So sad. Otoh, the chipmunk colony is growing in leaps and bounds.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus, I hope you're not in harm's way. I have a cousin living near the Rhine in the Cologne area and hope his home is safe. He's away on holiday now and he's not sure what he's going to return to.

@Sunbird24, fingers crossed.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/07/2021 19:38

@mathanxiety I am in Berlin. Ground water levels in Brandenburg have reached almost normal. But I am from the Ruhr and we were worried about my DSis and friends - luckily they are all accounted for (unlike lots of others).

We will have zuchini tomorrow - grilled with chili sauce. No pain or croissants for me today - DH wants to lose weight.

Champagneforeveryone · 17/07/2021 23:32

We spontaneously met friends for a drink and have howled with laughter all night (I suspect we were that table)

DS is now in isolation until next Friday so will miss the end of college. He's just made some extremely good cookies which follows on from his previously excellent biscotti - DH reckons he could get used to this state of affairs Grin

It's still 18 degrees and will drop to a low of 15 overnight Shock

Silkiecats · 17/07/2021 23:42

It's still 22C here, feels like 10,000C when you are my age.

Dds day out in London and Beckton drier trip is cancelled due to numbers self isolating, there was only dd and one other not self isolating.

Lots of exciting activities for tomorrow mowing the lawn, carpet cleaning, trying to fix washing machine leak.

Had two lots of scallops in white wine and parmesan sauce in shells for dinner which was lovely.

MissConductUS · 18/07/2021 01:36

22 C is about 72 F. That's what we set our air conditioning at.

We've had thunder storms all day so we couldn't cook out. We got fish and chips from a takeaway two towns away that we've never tried before and it was quite good.

The thunder storms have been really intense and rolled north into Massachusetts. A dorm at DD's university was hit by lightning and a small fire resulted. The dorm was unoccupied but the fire brigade showed up, which was exciting.

My hip finally feels better than it did before the surgery. That makes me very happy.

Wishing you an uncomplicated recovery, MissConduct. It's good to hear the operation seems to have had the desired effect.

I went out with DD to have a mosey around my local Goodwill in the afternoon as I had a 20% off coupon burning a hole in my wallet. DD found a lovely white linen top, a scented candle, and two books, and I found a hardback book about D-Day by Anthony Beevor. The whole lot came to $15. The D-Day book is going to take me ages to get through.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 18/07/2021 03:34

MissC - Hopefully your DD wasn’t affected? Was she shaken up?

So good to hear your hip is better.

Not much happening here. It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow. This feels like a long wet July. I feel sorry for all the people who’ve come to Maine for their summer vacation.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 18/07/2021 03:42

The news from Germany has been so awful Prokupatuscrakedatus. I hope all your friends are ok.

Sunbird24 · 18/07/2021 03:47

According to the thermostat it’s 26* in my bedroom right now. I don’t like it.
Glad you’re doing so well @MissConductUS, hope DD enjoyed the bonus visit from the firefighters!
@mathanxiety I have Anthony Beevor’s book on the Second World War - I bought it when I had an essay to write about the battle for Singapore so I’ve never actually read the whole thing (in my defence it’s a very thick book!)

Squirrel26 · 18/07/2021 07:50

I’m watching a program about gardening and participating in a discussion about the relative quality of different brands of horse riding tights in the Tack Room forum on here. I’m not sure I’ll be able to sustain these levels of excitement.
