I saw a cockroach literally shit itself last night. It was gross but also very satisfying Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 09/07/2021 19:31

Cockroaches in danger of their lives (ant attack etc.) 'give birth' - they empty their broodsacks. There was a film on the YT channel AntsCanada, where it was explained.
(I like spiders and insects)

MissConductUS · 09/07/2021 21:39

Welcome, @purrswhileheeats, and thanks for sharing your entomological news. We now have two insect fans on the thread. Smile

Frownette, that's horrible! Being groped like that is assault. Report it to the police.

I had a bit of a nap earlier and am now having a lovely cup of coffee. I'm really hoping for a better night's sleep tonight. I have avoided the narcotic pain relief (oxycodone) since last night, but might split another one and take half a tablet before bed. My surgeon has given me the okay to return to work on Monday.

You're welcome, I do have occasional roach visitors and they fascinate me, especially their speed!
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 10/07/2021 08:11

Miss I wanted to not take or greatly reduce the pain relief they prescribed after my OP, the nurse had the pain medication expert come and have words with me.

It has stopped raining, but as yet no visible sun.

MissConductUS · 10/07/2021 12:19

Prok, my hip is feeling less painful this morning, so I think I'm over the worst of it. Oxycodone has some negative side effects for me and I'm very wary about the addictive nature of it.

I was able to take off the huge bandage and have a shower this morning, hooray! I feel so much better. The incisions were tiny, no more than 6-8mm and closed with a single stitch. There is some bruising but that will fade. I had a much better night's sleep last night.

By the way, the art work of Hieronymous Bosch has been introduced into the TV series Bosch in season three. A killer left references to some of his famous paintings at a murder scene.

It will be cloudy and cool here today, which is a nice change from heat and thunderstorms. DS has gone off to early rowing practice. I think I'm just going to have an easy day as I'm still a bit knackered.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 10/07/2021 13:08

Miss Great you feel better!

It would have been a waste of a plot device to not refer to Bosch's art. Grin
We are having kohlrabi and potatoes today - because they are in season and at least one person likes them. The rest of us have to be grown up about it.

Silkiecats · 10/07/2021 14:27

Glad your hip is getting better MissC

I've just had notification of 2 more year 9 covid positives so we are playing the wait and see if your child needs to isolate game again. And wondering why 90% of the schools covid cases are in year 9 over past year. Confused Only 9 more school days to go. At least I paid £35 to move our holiday before from the first 10 days of school holidays as I thought I bet DS will get close contact just before term ends. At least its kids that are in isolation so only 5 school days off if he gets it.

Been watching Virgin River 3. Had some good news that the new computing teacher is the maths teacher DS has who has a degree in maths and computing, schools really struggle to get computing teachers here. We had one a term then a brilliant one this year but he is leaving.

DD has gone to London for the day. I ordered a new bed frame and table and DH is supposed to be collecting them on way back from London but I think he forgot to take my ID.

Silkiecats · 10/07/2021 15:13

I am continuing my research into what gets rid of flies. My research so far:

Outside fly trap is catching flies outside
Fly spray is closer to killing me than any flies.
Air freshener failed completely, thought the smell might help
Cleaning didn't help but at least it looks better
The most successful on the indoor fly is definitely Envole-Moi still.

Champagneforeveryone · 10/07/2021 16:22

silkie I could loan you DDog2 who has few (if any) useful functions, aside from her ninja like fly killing ability.

Talking of DDog2, she's off for a night in a hotel the night before our holiday. She's never been away from home aside from trips to DM's and is not known for a calm and level headed approach to life. It was either that or try and extricate DS from bed for a 5am start - on balance it seemed like the better option, but only time will tell Shock

Frownette · 10/07/2021 16:26

There's a nice atmosphere in the centre today, weather is mild and people seem happy and relaxed.

I ate my body weight in cherries then cooked a prawn pho, it was gorgeous with loads of fresh herbs but really packed a punch and I only put in half a bird's eye chilli.

Frownette · 10/07/2021 17:34

I'm useless, I just went to buy replacement cherries and then saw the charity shop was open so went in to get a lightweight top. Then spotted an embroidered heavy cotton skirt on my way to the till.

Then in the international shop I got cherries but was swayed by the nectarines as well and bought a fancy bottle of shampoo.

It was only supposed to be cherries

sueelleker · 10/07/2021 17:56

@Frownette Like the Tesco advert "I only went in for a loaf of bread".

MissConductUS · 10/07/2021 18:00

That's quite a shopping expidition, Frownette. Smile

I have to fry up some bacon to go with the burgers tonight, but procrastinated by spending some time on the deck. While out there with my kindle, I read a story in the WSJ about England being in a football match tomorrow that apparently everyone is very excited about. Who knew? Three Lions are important somehow.

I also realized that it's been ages since I bored you with any pictures of my deck garden, so here you go.

I will probably have a lie down after the bacon is done.

Miss Grin "I read a story in the WSJ about England being in a football match tomorrow that apparently everyone is very excited about. Who knew?"

Champagneforeveryone · 10/07/2021 20:01

DS and I have driven to sixth form.

Admittedly it was a fairly redundant trip as it was 7pm on a Saturday evening, but we have conquered the big, scary roundabout that annoyingly sits in the middle of the journey. It's unlikely to be such a restful experience at 8am in a weekday, but at least he's done it Grin

HelenaJustina · 10/07/2021 23:12

Exhausted today, we drove to Watford and took 4 DC to the Harry Potter Studios. It was completely brilliant, I highly recommend. Even if you aren’t in to the books or films, the process/skill/craftsmanship is fascinating.
It was a Christmas present so glad we’ve finally been before next Christmas!

Babycarrottt · 10/07/2021 23:36

I'm tired and trying to fall asleep. I can hear my ten week old breathing and all feels right. I've been in hospital for three weeks after having a gallstone attack and severe pancreatitis. At one point, both my partner and I believed that I wouldn't be coming out because I was so ill. The house is a mess and I'm behind with my business but I'm just glad to be home in my own bed.

Frownette · 10/07/2021 23:38

Helena I noticed earlier some shops are selling Xmas cards already

@Babycarrottt that sounds really painful, no wonder you are glad to be home with little one

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/07/2021 08:21

It is not raining for a change!
Our landlord sent us a notice of rent increase (all fine and legal) but before we agree I want him to send a plumber over for some repairs and maintenance.

We had a call, DMil has bacterial pneumonia.

MissConductUS · 11/07/2021 10:46

Welcome, @Babycarrottt, and best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. The house will get cleaned eventually and you'll get caught up on everything else.

I'm just up, have fed the cats and taken meat out of the freezer for dinner. My hip isn't too bad this morning. It's now back to about the same level of discomfort as before the surgery. Hopefully, it will continue to improve.

I checked and the England v Italy soccer football match will be on TV here at 3:00, on a sports channel I think we get. I mentioned it to DS and he didn't seem that interested in watching it, but perhaps I'll take a look. The WSJ ran another story about the game. Here's a brief quote:

For decades, heartbreak had been synonymous with English soccer in the same way England made milk-and-two-sugars synonymous with tea. But all around the country on Wednesday, bemused supporters spilled into the streets for a celebration that teetered between pure elation and utter bewilderment. England’s on-brand demeanor of expecting to lose became a struggle to process the prospect of actually winning.

That's a fascinating insight into the psychology of it that I hadn't appreciated or understood.

I'll probably skip church this morning. There's too much time standing. I'm off to the stationary bike and then a shower.

Hung a big wash out to dry in the sun before the rain comes. Came back in and took chocolate chip banana bread out the oven to cool as dc eagerly await a piece. Today is going to be a off jobs Sunday i feel.
That's good to hear @MissConductUS may i ask if it was a hip replacement you had and how long ago? I ask because i have a relative who is having quite a bit of bother but i think it hasn't been long enough for her. Hope it continues to improve.

Popcornbetty · 11/07/2021 11:30

odd jobs*

HildaTablet · 11/07/2021 12:12

Good to hear the hip is not giving too much trouble, MissC.

I'm planning to take some rubbish to the local tip when the preamble to the football is on. I have zero interest in it and neither does DH, but apparently we're the only people in the entire country who feel this way, if you believe the newspapers. I'm expecting it to be lovely and deserted at the tip.

I will however be glued to Berretini-Djokovic at Wimbledon later.

MissConductUS · 11/07/2021 12:18

@Popcornbetty, I had a much less serious surgery called an iliotibial band release, along with the removal of the bursa on the trochanter. The IT band is a long, flat muscle that covers the hip and connects down to the knee. Mine had become excessively tight where it covers the trochanter, the bony bump that sticks out from the hip. This is an old running injury, from overuse. My IT band release was done arthroscopically, so I just have two tiny incisions, above and below the trochanter.

My DH had a full hip replacement in May, so he is pretty much back to normal at this point. When you say it hasn't been long enough for your relative, do you mean that they are on a waiting list, or that the dysfunction isn't bad enough yet to require the surgery?

Speaking of baking, I picked up orange juice and walnuts at the supermarket yesterday so I think I'm going to try again making blueberry bread. We picked blueberries on a farm near us two weeks ago, so I still have loads of them in the fridge. Your chocolate chip banana bread sounds fab. May I ask how old your DC are? Mine are both in uni, but we only have one home with us this summer.
