Full face of make up and hair done for the gym???

Yes, I am being old and grumpy and judge before anyone says.

I've just got back to the gym after about 6m off, I stumble in with hair in a greasy ponytail and no makeup - because why would you, you're going to get sweaty and gross.

But it seems like a new species of gym goer has appeared in my little infancy gym. I swear, some of the younger women have full makeup on including lippy and contouring.

Wtf? Why? Are these Instagram people? Why would you bother? I look like a shiny tomato after the gym, doing 50 mins cardio followed by some weights.

It appears that some people now go in dolled up, do 15 minutes of fuck all, and then take photos of themselves standing with heavier weights than they used to work out.

Stop sitting on the fucking machines just to take selfies, I want to actually use them!!!

Ugh, I'm so old and grumpy.

This species of gym goer has not yet reappeared at my gym, but yes before lockdown, at certain times it would be full of young (er) woman in full make up, usually when the weights section was full of men heaving weights about (posing)

I'm fat, 56 and usually arrive at the gym dishevelled and sweaty after a few hours on the allotment

LolaSmiles · 24/06/2021 20:23

You're not old and grumpy at all. They're the same gym users who meet with a mate and spend time chatting by a machine instead of using it, and using machines or weight benches as somewhere to sit on their phones (and I'm not talking about a quick check or changing music between reps). That sort of gym user gets on my nerves and is on the same level as the men who apparently can't put their weights away properly.

I go after work so often have a full face of makeup on and my hair done.

I'm not washing it off before just to shower again after.

PromTwink · 24/06/2021 20:26

I don't get it. It seems like about 40% of the people in there, all under 25, are not actually working out.

They sit on a machine, take selfies. They go to the weights, do 5 minutes and then take photos in the mirror.

I don't wear make up to the gym (or most places these days tbh) because it would get ruined and sweaty.

But then I suppose they're not actually intending to get sweaty if they're just going in to take photos.

FFS I want to actually use the machines, and they're clogging them up doing fuck all.

Perhaps because they've gone straight to the gym from work? I don't understand why that's odd. I often have make up on at the gym and thinks it's sad people are judging.

Lakeshore6 · 24/06/2021 20:26

I won't ever be seen shaming anyone for wearing makeup , but posing on machines is fucking annoying

PromTwink · 24/06/2021 20:28

But they're not actually working out.

They're doing maybe 2 sets of 10 on a machine, and then looking on their phones or taking photos the rest of the time.

The slots I usually book are 11-12 or 1-2 so I don't think these are people coming straight from work.

They seem to be going to the gym for the purpose of using it as a photography studio.

StormcloakNord · 24/06/2021 20:33

They pay for the gym the same as you do.

I guarantee they're not all just standing about taking selfie's on gym machines.

Stop shitting on other women's confidence & concentrate on what you're doing.

JackieTheFart · 24/06/2021 20:33

When I went to the gym, many moons ago, I would go straight from work so I’d be wearing make up. I would, however, actually do a work out and not just be there to admire myself.

StormcloakNord · 24/06/2021 20:33

And you've honestly no idea how bitter/jealous you sound btw...

JackieTheFart · 24/06/2021 20:34

Hey @PromTwink pretty sure we’ve found one of your poseurs!

Are you one of them? Grin
Kanaloa · 24/06/2021 20:35

Maybe it’s the gym you go to. I go to a really cheap gym and I’ve never noticed people coming just to take photos. If someone is just sitting on a machine for an extended time can you ask politely if they’ve finished? Sometimes I do this with weights, or ask if we can swap sets if they are taking long rest times. Appreciate this is different with COVID though!

LawnFever · 24/06/2021 20:37

I normally go to the gym straight from work so yes I’ll have a full face of makeup and my hair done, what’s it got to do with anyone else?

I have a shower when I get home, I’m not going to take my makeup off beforehand!

I honestly couldn’t care less what anyone else is doing in the gym, I think you should concentrate on your own workout and stop worrying about everyone else.

PromTwink · 24/06/2021 20:38

Oh I sincerely promise you I'm not jealous, I'm 20 odd years older than them and am actually interested in fitness, not selfies.

I just want them to get the fuck off the machines they're not using to work out so that I can use them during my 1 hour allotted time slot.

emmathedilemma · 24/06/2021 20:40

Thankfully my gym doesn’t seem to attract these types although it has its fair share of the yummy mummies in full on sweaty Betty and lululemon coordinated kit whereas I turn up in any old freebie race T-shirt looking like I got dressed in the dark!
I went to pure gym a few times on guest passes and found that was really like this. The weights area was full but very few weights were actually being lifted (and those that were were mostly too heavy for the user and being lifted with very bad technique).

LawnFever · 24/06/2021 20:41

Why are you spending so much time watching what other people are doing?

You have no idea what hours other people work, and then wearing makeup or taking photos isn’t hurting anyone and is none of your business.

This is exactly the kind of judgy stuff that makes women worry about going to the gym in case people are watching them and the general consensus is usually nobody is taking any notice of anyone else except their own work out, except what a shame that’s actually not true Hmm

Doghead · 24/06/2021 20:42

You really do sound jealous tbh 🤣

StormcloakNord · 24/06/2021 20:42

I'm the exact opposite. I'm an extremely overweight mess who also goes in with greasy hair and no makeup.

However, I can't imagine actually getting annoyed at other women for having the confidence to take photos of themselves and appreciate the way they look. Fuck knows I'd love to be one of them.

I just don't see the point in trying to tear down women who are paying the same amount as you are to use the gym however they see fit.

purplesequins · 24/06/2021 20:43

doesn't it sting when make up sweat runs into the eyes? or is it just me?

StormcloakNord · 24/06/2021 20:43

Also echo PP - you're worse than them as you're the one side eyeing what other people are doing and judging them.

Like you said, you're at the gym to workout - stop bitterly staring at other women doing their own thing.

MysweetAudrina · 24/06/2021 20:44

Similar post yesterday about similar in swimming pools, dry haired, full make up, perfumed women doing breast stroke in pairs, taking up a lane and then standing chatting for 20 mins, after a couple of lengths, at the lane ends.

Sounds like there is going to have to be a post COVID adjustment period for everyone.

HavelockVetinari · 24/06/2021 20:46

A lot of women need to fit the gym into their working day, hence the make-up/hair. I couldn't care less what other women wear, I'm busy doing my own workout and zooming off back to work or nursery pick-up.

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2021 20:46

Is this thread full of posters who take photos of themselves on gym equipment?

Make up I understand. Taking photos not so much.
