Full face of make up and hair done for the gym???

Yes, I am being old and grumpy and judge before anyone says.

I've just got back to the gym after about 6m off, I stumble in with hair in a greasy ponytail and no makeup - because why would you, you're going to get sweaty and gross.

But it seems like a new species of gym goer has appeared in my little infancy gym. I swear, some of the younger women have full makeup on including lippy and contouring.

Wtf? Why? Are these Instagram people? Why would you bother? I look like a shiny tomato after the gym, doing 50 mins cardio followed by some weights.

It appears that some people now go in dolled up, do 15 minutes of fuck all, and then take photos of themselves standing with heavier weights than they used to work out.

Stop sitting on the fucking machines just to take selfies, I want to actually use them!!!

Ugh, I'm so old and grumpy.

We don't get this at my gym I'm glad to say, though I go quite early when most people seem to be retired.m. As an overweight an unfit 60 year old I would be very uncomfortable at the prospect at turning up in the background of someone else's photos, with red face and hair pulled back in a sweaty pony tail!

The people who annoy me are swimmers who wear perfume/aftershave or perfumed products and use the pool without showering first. I have sometimes had to leave the pool because the smell, combined with the chlorine, becomes overpowering.

grasstreeleaf · 25/06/2021 12:57

Hmm, I can see sharing exercise space with people is fraught with so many issues! It has only affirmed my choice to me of exercising at home or in the great outdoors was a good one...

grasstreeleaf · 25/06/2021 13:00

Although the manners of people's dogs which generally are just dying to lick or chase you and trip you up with their leads does leave something to be desired...

I went to a swimming lesson with a woman in full make up and falsh eyelashes. When the instructor told her we would be putting our faces in the water, she left!

Godmothered · 25/06/2021 13:44

I don't like to go anywhere with greasy hair and a bit of foundation because I'm ugly, overweight and have low self esteem. I need to make the best of what I've got so I don't feel like an utter sack of shit all the time.
I agree with you on the machine hogging and selfies though.

Imagine the uproar if one of your heavily made up gym girls posted a thread slagging off all the 'ugly' greasy haired women with no make up on at their gyms! Something I recall did happen on Instagram last year, I think she may have lost her job because of it actually.

Hanhan99 · 25/06/2021 13:45

I will admit I am one of the people that puts makeup on to go to the gym and I do occasionally Instagram it but I pay my membership the same as everyone else so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to use the gym how I would like to use it just as you are entitled to go and do a heavy workout. I do t really see why it is an issue. Live and let live!

ferneytorro · 25/06/2021 13:51

I had a tenuously related thing where I appeared in someone’s Instagram stories (is that the right phrase, the little videos) where she was filming at the gym looking very polished and more glam than I look on nights out! I was in the running machine and was filmed from behind which I know is fine and allowed but felt a bit odd.

Didn't she actually shame the woman and post photos rather than just a commentary on women who go to they gym fully made up?

azimuth299 · 25/06/2021 15:38

@TherightsideofHERstory

The thing I’m getting from this thread is the sheer number of people suggesting that gym goers in makeup might be coming from, or going to work. Add in all the pps who say that they go to the gym in makeup because, again, work. It is entirely possible to undertake paid employment without makeup, the vast majority of men seem to manage it, as do many women. If a woman chooses to wear makeup for work that’s absolutely fine, what makes me feel a bit uncomfortable is the underlying message that work = makeup essential.
I don't think that people are saying that work means make up is essential, they are just replying to the OP's assumption that these people are doing their hair and make up for the gym.
azimuth299 · 25/06/2021 15:40

@VodkaSlimline

Couldn't agree more OP. The Kardashian clones at my gym wear such skimpy tops that there's no way they can do any proper cardio. They also take mirror selfies in the changing room. Am I really old-fashioned for not wanting people to use camera phones where I take my clothes off?

Plenty of instawanker men as well - all looking and acting very steroidy, most with huge arms and chicken legs, and all seemingly unable to lift weights without grunting, screaming and throwing them on the floor at the end of a set. Pathetic.

This is so rude. Since when does wearing a skimpy top mean that you can't do cardio properly? Confused

I agree that cameras should be prohibited in the changing rooms (they usually are) but there's no need to be so rude about other women for not wearing the same things as you!

VodkaSlimline · 25/06/2021 17:04

@azimuth299 the tops are like bikini tops - skimpy and low-cut with thin straps. They are not functionally appropriate for any fast/intense cardio like cross trainer, running, fitness classes etc. At best it would be very uncomfortable and at worst a boob could pop out! It is fairly obvious that someone who wears that sort of outfit at the gym isn't going to be working out very hard - and indeed they don't, preferring to float around posing on various machines.

Viviennemary · 25/06/2021 17:10

Good for them making an effort. I wish I could be bothered but I can't. Let them get on with it.

Are you talking about sports bras? It's pretty common to exercise in a sports bra to keep cool. Skimpy clothes don't stop you exercising - look at what athletes are wearing in the Olympics - most of the runners wear a sports bra and pants!

I've never seen someone's boob pop out in the gym - I would imagine that if it happened the person would probably not wear that bra again! The same if it was uncomfortable to move in. Just let people live their lives without all this judgement.

Hanhan99 · 25/06/2021 17:17

People can wear whatever they like to the gym! We get enough judgment from men about what we wear without other women judging too Hmm

Zenithbear · 25/06/2021 17:23

I'm early 50s and work one day a week. I put makeup on every morning not just for work and go to the gym/swimming/badminton/yoga/sauna/
dog walking etc in make up, just like when I go shopping, out for coffee, ride my motorbike and on and on.
I like wearing makeup and didn't know anybody cared.

Pinuporc · 25/06/2021 17:23

A friend of mine wears full make up for parkrun. I'm impressed she makes the effort and gets up early enough to do that, I can barely leave enough time to procrastinate get dressed and drive there!!

MaybeCrazy2 · 25/06/2021 17:27

Do you just go to the gym to look at people?

I go to work out, I couldn’t tell you whose in the gym, what they were doing or what they was wearing! Your paying too much attention to others than yourself.

Is it not allowed to wear makeup to the gym?

VodkaSlimline · 25/06/2021 17:29

I do know the difference between a sports bra (which I wear myself) and a bikini-style strappy top. I think the name for the sort of top I mean is "bralet"? Anyway, they are inappropriate and it's fairly obvious that if you come to the gym wearing one you aren't going to do a challenging workout.

Hanhan99 · 25/06/2021 17:32

@VodkaSlimline and why do you care if they are not doing a proper workout? What is that to you? Didn’t know you were the gym police..

Pinuporc · 25/06/2021 17:41

Maybe there should be some fake "prop"machines for posing and photos and other functioning ones for exercise....? Grin

MaybeCrazy2 · 25/06/2021 17:43

To be honest if we’re judging other women.....anyone whose not lifting isn’t doing a proper work out to me, so there!! 🤣

BrownEyedGirl80 · 25/06/2021 17:45

When I went to the gym regularly in the 90s there were 2 women who were as you described but without the mobile phones.I don't think its a new thing as pp said.

azimuth299 · 25/06/2021 17:48

I've never seen anyone in a gym wearing a bikini top and no bra! I suppose it would be fine for weights though... Why do you care if they aren't doing a "challenging workout"? What is a challenging workout? Should you be asked to leave if the staff don't feel like you're putting in enough effort on the treadmill?
AnaViaSalamanca · 25/06/2021 17:48

Maybe they are single and fed up with online dating apps and are following the advice of those who tell them to meet people in the gym?

TBH I find all of it fine, but taking photos really annoys me as they don’t check if other people are in the frame. I think I have been photographed a few times looking red and sweaty Hmm

OurChristmasMiracle · 25/06/2021 17:49

I go to the gym to workout. I am (blissfully) unaware of those around me. In fact a Greek god could be standing next to me naked begging me to be his goddess and I wouldn’t know anything about it let alone what other women are wearing or not wearing!
