Full face of make up and hair done for the gym???

Yes, I am being old and grumpy and judge before anyone says.

I've just got back to the gym after about 6m off, I stumble in with hair in a greasy ponytail and no makeup - because why would you, you're going to get sweaty and gross.

But it seems like a new species of gym goer has appeared in my little infancy gym. I swear, some of the younger women have full makeup on including lippy and contouring.

Wtf? Why? Are these Instagram people? Why would you bother? I look like a shiny tomato after the gym, doing 50 mins cardio followed by some weights.

It appears that some people now go in dolled up, do 15 minutes of fuck all, and then take photos of themselves standing with heavier weights than they used to work out.

Stop sitting on the fucking machines just to take selfies, I want to actually use them!!!

Ugh, I'm so old and grumpy.
@VodkaSlimline and why do you care if they are not doing a proper workout? What is that to you? Didn’t know you were the gym police..
Because they hog the machines for their photos and poses, because they use camera phones in the changing rooms, and because my gym has limited numbers at present due to social distancing. So coming in just to ponce around for hours looking in the mirrors and taking selfies is selfish. They could do that at home. I don't have gym equipment at home.

Branleuse · 25/06/2021 17:59

Most people dont bother dressing up for the gym, but theres always a few that do. I remember seeing one young woman with a personal trainer, not just make up but loads of jewellery too, necklaces and chains. Bloody weird, then they pose on the machines too and hog them, barely breaking a sweat.
Thankfully most people arent such posers.
Plenty of male posers too tbf in their trendy little outfits, too short-joggers and beanie hats, excessively grunting just so you know theyre lifting a heavy weight. Who the hell can excercise in a wooly beanie ?

Polkadots2021 · 25/06/2021 18:23

OP I so massively feel your pain. I've been in the fitness industry a quarter of a century and I remember the days when people took workouts seriously, mobile phones weren't interesting enough to take in the gym, people worked out at the free weights to build muscle in beanie hats with thrash metal playing on their music player, head down, great form, just getting on with it...

Now it's all posing guys trying to get Instagram likes and trying to sound like gym experts (I remember when you used to need a sport science degree to be a PT), everyone with their phones, vanity everywhere, girls posing, same deal, hair flicking, stupid tiktok videos recording themselves and asking everyone 'is that guy behind me taking a photo of me?' Answer...who gives a sh#t, go workout and stop bloo#dy camping on that bit of equipment please as other more serious exercisers want it.

God don't get me started it drives me insane, these idiots.

OP you have 100% the right idea.

The others' 'All the gear and no idea'.

Does it really matter if they do? They pay as much as you do and have every right to be there looking fab.

VodkaSlimline · 25/06/2021 19:46

It does a bit, yes, as it impacts on people who actually want to use the gym equipment for fitness training. I wouldn't book up all the lip filler appointments and then pull a no-show at the last minute...

Happening to have your hair and make-up done because you've come from work, no problem, not affecting anyone (unless it's strong perfume, but that seems to be a dry-hair breast stroke thing)

Doing your hair and make-up as part of a superficial posing routine to present a charade on social media while obstructing other gym-goers wishing to use the equipment is a problem. It was pre-selfie, but a housemate joined the uni gym with her mate and from their accounts seemed to sit there oggling the lads and returned home looking suspiciously fresh. I'm sure they'd be busy instagramming away had it been 2021.

Personally I like post-run/ workout pictures that make me look like a derranged beetroot Grin
@azimuth299 the tops are like bikini tops - skimpy and low-cut with thin straps. They are not functionally appropriate for any fast/intense cardio like cross trainer, running, fitness classes etc. At best it would be very uncomfortable and at worst a boob could pop out! It is fairly obvious that someone who wears that sort of outfit at the gym isn't going to be working out very hard - and indeed they don't, preferring to float around posing on various machines.
Huh? Have you ever seen professional athletes at the Olympics? The running gear is sports bra and shorts, yet amazingly they manage to out-perform almost all other women.

Check your internal misogyny - women are sometimes really awful to their own sex, we need to stop.

LolaSmiles · 26/06/2021 20:40

To be fair, there is a difference between the bikini style fashion athleisure tops and sports bras/sports crop tops that athletes wear.

I love a good sports bra as much as the next person, and have no issues with people exercising in crop tops because I do it myself. Some of what is sold in the shops are nowhere close to being sportswear. I ordered a low support one for yoga and nearly took my eye out the second I did anything other than stand upright. It wasn't low support. It was no support, cut really low, useless elastic on the straps, and was clearly designed for fashion and wandering around with your boobs out. Since the trend of athleisure, there's a lot of so called activewear that is totally useless.

It's not internalised misogyny to notice that some clothing is cut for fashion and not for function. If anything it's better to comment on this because it's shocking that there's a market for women's athletic clothing where the athletic function comes second.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/06/2021 20:45

You're spending too much time watching them instead of getting about your own (gym) business OP.

Ignore them. I assume they ignore you watching them disapprovingly over their makeup.

You're all paying for the gym anyway so it's a case of getting on with your differing goals.

Treehaus · 26/06/2021 20:46

Let me guess, you don't have as much issue with the men who pose their way around the machines. Plenty of fitness influencers are male so I bet there are a few, but it's mainly the women dating to wear make up that bother you isn't it. Otherwise your thread would be about people hogging the machines, yet it wasn't until you realised people pointed out the thread was mean.

VodkaSlimline · 28/06/2021 09:11

@Treehaus can only speak for myself but I have MORE of an issue with the men. They are noisy, grunty, sweaty and in some cases smelly. The girls, while vacuous and taking up space, are at least quiet and decorative. It's mainly their use of camera phones in changing rooms that I object to but so far everyone I've asked to stop taking photos in there has done so once I've pointed out it isn't the best idea.
