Full face of make up and hair done for the gym???

Yes, I am being old and grumpy and judge before anyone says.

I've just got back to the gym after about 6m off, I stumble in with hair in a greasy ponytail and no makeup - because why would you, you're going to get sweaty and gross.

But it seems like a new species of gym goer has appeared in my little infancy gym. I swear, some of the younger women have full makeup on including lippy and contouring.

Wtf? Why? Are these Instagram people? Why would you bother? I look like a shiny tomato after the gym, doing 50 mins cardio followed by some weights.

It appears that some people now go in dolled up, do 15 minutes of fuck all, and then take photos of themselves standing with heavier weights than they used to work out.

Stop sitting on the fucking machines just to take selfies, I want to actually use them!!!

Ugh, I'm so old and grumpy.

I often go in a full face, as I’m coming straight from work.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 24/06/2021 20:49

If I have make up on after work, I take it off with a wipe before I work out. It just feels ‘fresher’.

AnnieSnap · 24/06/2021 20:49

@StormcloakNord

And you've honestly no idea how bitter/jealous you sound btw...
Oooh, are you a gym poser? 😎🧘‍♀️🤸👩‍🦳

I probably wouldn't notice them at all if they weren't hogging machines that they're not actually using.

To PPs who appear to be in the demographic that I'm talking about, enjoy your posing, have at it, but would you mind not doing it on the only lat pull machine in the gym? Thanks ladies, enjoy Instagram 😘

Wide · 24/06/2021 20:51

So why don't you ask them if you can use the machines?? I was gonna join a gym as I finish work at 1pm where I have to be dolled up and it wasn't worth the drive home by the time I have to fetch the kids from school and I did think I'm gonna look like ive worn loads of makeup for the gym when nobody knows I have been at work and not gonna wipe it off to then looked washed out for the school run from using wipes. So maybe stop being so judgemental and yeah you do sound jealous of women half your age

PromTwink · 24/06/2021 20:52

@AnnieSnap Yes I think I've touched a nerve. I shouldn't have mentioned make up perhaps. Just general could you please not use gym machines for the purpose of taking photos when there are people actually waiting to use them.

Same as PPs have said. You sound very judgemental and frankly quite misogynistic. Try and have some compassion for the amount of pressure young women face to look perfect and flawless in this fucked up patriarchy we live in.

And referring to women as 'species' Hmm

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/06/2021 20:53

I used to go to the gum in my make up because id gone after work. I didn’t take selfies. That was pre mobile cameras.

The local dealer used to sit on the weights bench on his mobile doing deals wearing jeans. T’was all very entertaining.

SirenSays · 24/06/2021 20:53

You can even buy make up specifically designed for working out in now. If they're hogging equipment just ask them to hurry it up.

Beannag · 24/06/2021 20:53

You sound delightful OP.

Christmasbird · 24/06/2021 20:56

I wear a full face of makeup with my hair done to sit in the house on my own never mind the gym.
I don't take selfies there though, I just go and throw some weights around and get out of there.. just depends on your daily routine I suppose.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 24/06/2021 20:56

It’s annoying when people hog machines or weights. I couldn’t care less what their hair and make up looks like though.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/06/2021 20:57

To answer your question, yes, they are instagram people.

PromTwink · 24/06/2021 20:57

Oh thanks very much Wink

I don't notice about makeup but my (cheapy) gym just reopened and it was full of people taking selfie's and sitting on the mats scrolling through their phones. Never seen this before. The main bit of it I don't understand is why would you want to hang out in a gym if you're not working out? I mean they're pretty smelly places and there's a lot better places to relax in.

mistermagpie · 24/06/2021 20:59

I can understand it must be annoying if people are sitting on machines and not using them, although maybe instead of slagging them off on the internet it would be more useful just to ask them to move?

But if you just don't like how they look (which is what this is about let's face it - you wrote the thread title) perhaps you should stop looking at them?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/06/2021 21:02

And I say this because I used to be an instagram person, so can spot them a mile off.

I stopped because I had a child and quite frankly I cba with the effort (it is a lot of effort). I still go to the gym though, just in an oversize tshirt and no-make up.

FYI - the instagram people do also work out, just after all the pictures have been taken.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 24/06/2021 21:02

I go to the gym straight from work, so the days that I've been in the office I look a bit like the gym goers you describe, the days I've been working from home 8 have a messy ponytail and maybe some mascara on... at the end if either session I'm a sweaty mess with my hair plastered to the sides of my face and any makeup smudged to hell.

There are some women who leave as they arrived, they scare me because how do I achieve that!?!?!?!

Redyellowpink · 24/06/2021 21:02

I find it hard to imagine there are no men hogging the weights and machines, posing, flexing and spotting each other, not to mention leering over the women you originally mentioned and generally making everyone feel uncomfortable. Unless we work out at gyms on two different planets.

Funny how you don't attack the men. Why is it only women that wind you up?

HelpingJane · 24/06/2021 21:03

Make up I understand. Taking photos not so much.

Surely it's not that strange, there are Instagram accounts full of people filming their workouts/ tracking progress etc?

Machine hoggers are annoying; I'll give you that! But young people wanting to look 'nice' is hardly a new thing.

This in spades.

I understand it must be annoying wanting on a machine and someone is using it to take pictures but just ask if they are finished? Why come on here under the guise of frustration at not getting on a machine when actually all you wanted to do was bitch about the fact they're wearing makeup which you've convinced yourself they have done specially for the gymConfusedHmm

It's the green eyed monster OP promises us all isn't hovering on her shoulder Grin
Wide · 24/06/2021 21:07

And another thing, i genuinely hardly sweat at the gym, I never have, I think it's because I'm always cold so rarely get warm and yes I am working hard enough. Bet you look a right weirdo staring at all these girls, maybe you could take some photos of yourself before and after and see the improvement and focus on yourself a little bit?!

Trike1 · 24/06/2021 21:09

There have been hardly any opportunities for dressing up and looking nice over the past year. I sometimes feel like dressing up just for going to the supermarket!

Cheeseandlobster · 24/06/2021 21:10

Make up and hair- meh. I don't care.

But machine hogging for selfies is just fucking annoying. Yes I get it. They have paid too so theoretically they can do what they want. But it is selfish behaviour. Particularly during covid where you have a limited slot to work out. I mean you wouldn't go to the supermarket and hog an aisle with your trolley, posing and taking selfies so why make a nuisance of yourself at the gym?
