How far away do you live from family?

I was talking to DH about this this evening, my family have always lived within 15 mins of each other until we moved an hour and a half away. Sometimes it feels like I’m too far away from them so I was just wondering what everyone else does?

100 miles. 2.5hours,by road. Even without covid, we only see each other 3-4 times a year.

pinkprosseco · 20/06/2021 00:13

360 miles. Not my choice

purplebagladylovesgin · 20/06/2021 00:23

10 minutes from one and 20 mins from the other two. Just far enough to be close but not in each other's pockets. We meet up a few times a week.

Prior to this it was the same road and the others were 60 seconds in a car and everyday meet ups. Which was lovely too.

I guess if you get on it's ideal.

I find this interesting too OP.

I used to live 24 hour flight from my family and 1 hour flight from DH family.

I would see ndn family visit and feel really sad my DC didn't have any family around.

We moved and now live 40 mins from my family and I love it. I wish IL were closer but we are always going to be on the other side of the from one of our family.

2 miles from MIL/nearly all of other in laws
3 miles from my parents

devastating · 20/06/2021 00:58

1082 miles from my Dad. Haven’t seen him since the summer of 2019 because of the pandemic, and really hope to see him this summer come what may.

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 01:05

Minutes away from my (separated) parents. I see one of them every week and the other never.

Reearry · 20/06/2021 01:19

10 hours by direct flight and two and half hours after that from airport to home due to bad traffic for my family. Usually longer because direct flights are expensive so almost always one stop in the middle. DH family is about 15 hours if it's a direct flight and then a transfer from international airport to domestic flight and much longer if the international flight was not a direct flight.

Feel lucky because I have cousins and family for whom it takes 24 hours by flight with transfers and DP used to do the same every year for a decade

Both my parents are deceased but most of my extended family live in my hometown. My in-laws live in England.

I live 750 miles from my hometown, 1100 miles from my only sibling. She's closer to me now because she used to live 4200 miles from me and we were in the same country!

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/06/2021 01:27

My mum and Dad live in my garage. It's been converted in to a small flat. Mum is disabled and it helps me care for her that they are here

clpsmum · 20/06/2021 01:28

5/6 hour drive 😫

MountainDweller · 20/06/2021 01:30

About 600 miles from my mum and 700 from DH's. Short flight or 10-12 hours by car. Haven't been since late 2019.

FaceyRomford · 20/06/2021 02:21

My parents are 89 miles away by AA route planner. Takes just under 2 hours if traffic is OK (they're in S London). It's just about the maximum for a day trip. My extended family in Kent ( a further 80 miles) requires an overnight stay.

FiveShelties · 20/06/2021 02:44

About 11,500miles. Not seen my Mum since Nov 19 thanks to Covid, usually do the trip three times a year.

metalkprettyoneday · 20/06/2021 02:54

Too far! A long long plane ride.
I would like to live in the same country at least however far. as then you don’t have to miss important events like funerals , Christmas etc.

IAmDaveTheSerialShagger · 20/06/2021 02:58

I live 30 minutes from my parents but my sister lives in London and my brother on the SE Coast, bit far from the NE.

insertrandomusernamehere · 20/06/2021 03:12

220 miles. I miss them but whenever I talk to them and hear about what's been happening in their lives, I'm so glad I live far away. There's always so much drama.

MadMadMadamMim · 20/06/2021 03:27

Within 15 minutes.

And it's too close. I'd rather see far less of them. in-laws...about 8 hours away. Much better.

Classicbrunette · 20/06/2021 04:26

150 miles

pinkprosseco · 20/06/2021 04:29

@Mummyme87

I’m south London, my mam is Northumberland so 350miles, my other family Newcastle so 300miles. In laws Barnstaple in Devon so around 200miles.

It’s bloody hard work!

Very similar situation to me. Mum recently in hospital in Morpeth I live in SE Have done a few there and back in one day drives recently. It's very hard.
Frownette · 20/06/2021 04:31

Sibling + parent very close by, everyone else miles away

FiveGs · 20/06/2021 04:35

A long way.

I live in Asia
Parents and two siblings live in Europe
PiLs/DH family in N America
Other sibling in S America.

Hoping to see my parents this summer if I can travel back to the UK (first time in two years) but let's see.

iminthegarden · 20/06/2021 04:37

We used to be overseas now live 15 mins from my sibling but saw more of them when we were overseas.

GADDay · 20/06/2021 04:46

garlictwist · 20/06/2021 04:52

I'm a 25 minute walk from my parents, or 10 min drive, and a 50 min walk from my sister (or 15 min drive). So nice and close!
