How far away do you live from family?

I was talking to DH about this this evening, my family have always lived within 15 mins of each other until we moved an hour and a half away. Sometimes it feels like I’m too far away from them so I was just wondering what everyone else does?

Sorry, should have been clearer, they're both 1.5 hours in opposite directions. We didn't deliberately move in the middle, just ended up this way.

RoseMartha · 19/06/2021 22:12

Close family. About three miles and half a mile away.

Extended family all over the world however.

xoJellybean · 19/06/2021 22:46

30 mins for both my family and my in laws

10 metres from my parents, 150 metres from my brother.

Passthesauce · 19/06/2021 23:05

5 hour drive from parents
2 hour drive from in-laws
2 hour drive (in opposite direction!) from my sister
13 hour flight from my brother and his family.

I'm in the SE, parents in NE. Growing up, my mum's family were in the SE, so I've always been used to family being a long drive away.

It's seemed much further this year, though, and no idea when I'll next see my brother.

ZenNudist · 19/06/2021 23:08

Around an hour from my parents, two and a half hours from DH's parents. This works well for us. Not too far that it's a real ball ache to see them, but not in their pockets. Dc zoom grandparents a lot.

BirdyBee · 19/06/2021 23:12

My sister lives opposite me, my brother 2 doors down!

xyzandabc · 19/06/2021 23:15

Parents 12 hour drive. Sibling 2 flights and 17 hours, more like 23 hrs if you take the ferry instead of fly.
I live 15 mins from where I grew up, they all moved away.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 19/06/2021 23:15

5 mins drive from my parents & grandparents
15/20 mins drive from my sister & BIL
15 mins drive to in laws

Some of these are down a bypass or 1 junction of a motorway.

@theprisonerofazkabitch

It seems to vary a lot then!. My DH lives in a different country to his family (doesn’t see them anyway), but I think being a child and having family around me all the time it just feels weird being quite far away from our family.
I know what you mean. I always lived within a 5 minute walk of mine but am now a 30 minute drive away and it seems like it's too far (ridiculous when DPs family live 11,900 miles away!)
Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 19/06/2021 23:25

3 hours from my mum and sister, 1 hour from my brother, 5 hours from in laws.

Lollypop4 · 19/06/2021 23:29

4mins from DB2, 10mins from DB1 , 40mins from DB3.
15mins from parents.
I did live 3hrs away for 10 years.
Pros and cons to each distance.

PinkPurpleParade · 19/06/2021 23:33

I'm extremely close to my mum & grandma who are only 10-15 mins away.
My dad lives 2 hours away so we only see him every few months.
DP's parents are only 20 mins away.

ExDP (DD's dad) family all live 3-4 hours drive away and he says he isn't bothered but I'd find that really hard, they are lovely and make a huge effort to travel up to see him and DD but in a year they probably only see eachother 4 times. All families are very different though!

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 19/06/2021 23:36

Takes me 4-6 hours to see them depending on what time we leave and how many crashes occur on route.

JackieTheFart · 19/06/2021 23:37

I live about 180 miles from my mum and dad (separately) which is about 2 and a half hours on a good day with no traffic! My sister lives another hour but less than 30 miles away.

My brother I see at meet ups as he lives with his girlfriends family in another direction.

I wish we were closer. I miss them. My sister is having a baby soon and I wish we could be close.

theprisonerofazkabitch · 19/06/2021 23:37

So interesting! I see my family quite a lot still, as posters have said, the distance means a day visit is doable. But I think I’d like to be able to just pop around for a cuppa whenever I wanted.

I should say, my DM and Nan live together and they live a 5 min walk from me. So I do have them, but I have quite a large family and I wish I saw more of them

We're in London, nearest family are in Hull (BIL and family). The rest are in Scotland, N Ireland and France. Would be nice to be close enough to meet up on weekends - we have occasionally met the Hull lot somewhere a couple of hours drive for each of us, but that's not really an option for my family in N Ireland!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/06/2021 23:54

8 hours drive away. We're SE England and they're in Scotland. I haven't seen my parents since November 2019.

Laufeythejust · 19/06/2021 23:57

I live a 45 minute drive away but I am moving closer. Lockdown made me realise how isolated I felt being this far away- nipping round for a brew/ picking my gran up and taking her to the shops were things I missed to much. It’s weird because it’s taken me 6 years of living away to feel like this!

noblegreenk · 19/06/2021 23:58

My closet family members all live within 5-10 minute drive of each other. I bought a house 25 minute drive away, and they way they go on about it you'd think I live in a different flippin country! They all work very close to home though, and rarely leave their immediate area, so I think their world is kind of small iyswim. Whereas I've worked in a different city for 15 years, so have a different perspective.

AdoptedBumpkin · 20/06/2021 00:00

About 180 miles from parents.

Strokethefurrywall · 20/06/2021 00:03

5000 miles from family. Hard during Covid.

caringcarer · 20/06/2021 00:06

180 miles from 2 sisters I am close to. 195 miles from other sister. 150 miles from my dd and dgs. 145 miles from in-laws. Before Covid not an issue as overnight stays but now very restrictive with no overnight stays allowed.

elQuintoConyo · 20/06/2021 00:08

2.5 hour flight from my parents. 15 min drive from in-laws. Zero help with children from in-laws, almost zero interest, either. Tbh my mother doesn't really give a monkeys (she has her favourite GCs, my sibling's). But my dad is ace and we all miss him dearly.
