How far away do you live from family?

I was talking to DH about this this evening, my family have always lived within 15 mins of each other until we moved an hour and a half away. Sometimes it feels like I’m too far away from them so I was just wondering what everyone else does?

I live a 4hr drive from my parents, a 3hr drive from my brother (in a totally different direction) and my sister lives on the other side of the world! I love them dearly and wish we lived closer and my DC saw their grandparents and aunt and uncle more but work and friends keep us here.

Growing up, my (house) family were the only family in our City.
'Home' for both my parents was a 4 hours journey one way and about a 3.5 hour journey for the other.

So I found it quite strange to have my parents 10mins away when my dc were born - no "going on holiday to Grandparents". No "staying with" grandparents.

Now I no longer have my parents, the only one left from their generation is 2 hours away.
My sister is only 15mins away but my brother is about 3 hours away.

1.5 hours is quite nice - close enough still for a day visit.

Driving it’s about 3hrs to my parents and 5 hours to in laws. It’s been obviously difficult this last year or so as day trips/outdoor meet-ups haven’t been possible at all.

I’m worried about them all getting old if I’m honest. Especially my parents as they don’t live close to any family. In laws live close to SIL.

200 miles from mine, 400 miles from PIL.

HalfBrick · 19/06/2021 21:19

12 miles from mine, 2 miles from in laws. This is common for the the part of the country I'm in. People don't go far. It's rubbish when you're a teenager, a lifesaver when you've got kids.

TheatricalGiraffe · 19/06/2021 21:20

My dad & His parents live 15 minutes apart...

We live about two hours away from my dad. My sister is about 2.5 hours from us, 2 from my dad

EnjoyingTheSunshine · 19/06/2021 21:20

697 miles

Roodicus21 · 19/06/2021 21:23

Up until end of last year we lived 1hr 15 from dh family, so close enough for day trips, but not close enough for them to offer any practical support/ help in an emergency. We were living in another country to my family but moved. Now live 15-20 minutes from my family. I love it as does dc. Cousins near that they can do gym club / summer clubs with. First time I'll be spending Father's Day with my dad in 15 years tomorrow! I'll not be moving again.

Phoebesgift · 19/06/2021 21:23

310 miles from my family. About about 5 minutes from his. Wish it was the other way round. 😕

Mummyme87 · 19/06/2021 21:31

I’m south London, my mam is Northumberland so 350miles, my other family Newcastle so 300miles. In laws Barnstaple in Devon so around 200miles.

It’s bloody hard work!

Badoukas · 19/06/2021 21:32

260 miles.

Terrazzo · 19/06/2021 21:32

From my parents, 3-4 hours ish.

DH’s parents highly dislike me, they used to live 4-5 hours away but moved 10 mins away 🤨

Trinacham · 19/06/2021 21:38

My sister is in the next street, my mum is 5 minutes down the road, as is my grandmother. My brother is the furthest, being 10 minutes away!

vampirethriller · 19/06/2021 21:41

11 hours from my mother and siblings. One from my dad.

OldTinHat · 19/06/2021 21:42

Two hour drive but only 25 miles as the crow flies (I have to take a car ferry).

Maddermax · 19/06/2021 21:43

I live between a 3 minute walk and a 5 minute drive away from my entire family.

rainbowninja · 19/06/2021 21:45

3 hrs from my parents, moved in my early twenties and was ok with it but found it harder in my early 30's once I'd had my own daughter

SherlockandJohn · 19/06/2021 21:48

900 miles and 16 hours away from mine. 5 mins from all of DPs

FluffMagnet · 19/06/2021 21:49

Roughly 2 hrs each to my parents and MIL (in different areas though, so can't kill two birds with one stone visit-wise). FIL and SMIL live on different continent. My sister lives close to my parents so at least can see them both at the same time. SIL lives a good 3 hrs plus from us (completely opposite direction from MIL) so we see very little of her and her family.

3LittleDucksQuack · 19/06/2021 21:49

Dad 2 min walk.
Mum 5 min drive
I laws 10 min drive.
Lots of aunts and uncles (prob around 15 of them) all live within 20 min drive same city.

WillowintheUK · 19/06/2021 22:01

Don’t have parents, but my adult children are all within either a few minutes walk or drive.

Worriesome · 19/06/2021 22:03

I’m 10mins away x

MandoInABar · 19/06/2021 22:05

I'm 4+ hours away, and it's too far. I hate it.

TentTalk · 19/06/2021 22:07

1.5 from mine, 1.5 DHs. Was 2 hours from DHs but they've moved a bit closer. There's times I'd like to be closer, but being closer to one means further away from the other.

MouseholeCat · 19/06/2021 22:08

I live 4,181 miles from my family. Before I moved to the US we were 2 hours away. We live 2 hours from DH's family. It's not great during Covid times, but we get by.
