Which simple, simple dish do you love?

I adore a plain, beautifully cooked and seasoned omelette. At most with a few chopped herbs but cooked on its own is fine. Served with a green salad - something like fresh little gem lettuce leaves or pea shoots - dressed lightly with lemon and olive oil.

Valley light resin????
Calorie light version 🙄

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 16/06/2021 23:02

Dressed rocket, watercress and lambs lettuce with shavings of Parmesan.

Or shreds of iceberg lettuce out of a bag with slices of plastic cheese eaten with the fridge door open

gelatodipistacchio · 16/06/2021 23:05

Veg washed, cut up, tossed with oil, cooked in the air fryer for about 7 min. Reliably delicious.

Best green veg is Tenderstem broccoli. Rinse, shake off most of the water. put in a roasting pan, add splash of olive oil, splash of soy sauce. Top shelf of a hot oven til stems just cooked through and the tops have got a bit charred, ie just a few mins. Sesame seeds and/or toasted sesame oil optional. I eat a whole pack usually.

Haricots a la sauce de tomate on toast.

bigbaggyeyes · 17/06/2021 07:01

Breakfast bowl

Chopped up Bacon and mushrooms in a bowl, too with baked beans and crack an egg over the top (add grated cheese on top if you like). Salt and pepper it and then bung in the oven for 40 mins. Eat out the bowl.

bigbaggyeyes · 17/06/2021 07:02

English strawberries with a teaspoon of icing sugar over the top

HoxtonBonnet · 17/06/2021 07:15

Spaghetti with garlic, chilli and Parmesan.

This is the most middle class Mumsnet thread I've ever seen - I was expecting answers like a cheese sarnie. There's nothing "simple" about 90% of these 😂

cherrytree63 · 17/06/2021 07:30

Bubble and Squeak. Beat an egg into it, fry in a hot skillet for extra crispy on the outside.
It even tastes good in a sandwich!

StiffyByng · 17/06/2021 07:34

Why is it middle class to like and eat nice food?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/06/2021 07:38

Gosh, shame my dads bit around or is tell him off for likening middle class food... he lived in Italy for a couple of years and must’ve had quite exotic tastes for 1950s east end Glasgow...

Are you stuck in the thatcher years?

So I suppose a “cheese sarnie” is the food if choice for…. The dear old “workin’ class”

What’s tricky about mozerella, tomatoes and balsamic? That’s 3 ingredients. Or roasted veg? That requires chopping, an oven and some oil. Or pasta, garlic, chilli and oil? Mediterranean style food is delicious often due to its simplicity Smile

Great thread - lots of inspiration and reminders thanks.

InTheDrunkTank · 17/06/2021 08:37

Super fresh white bread with really posh home made butter YUM! (Just to add I've only had it in restaurants I have never home made my own butter).

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 17/06/2021 09:09

Rice with lots of butter and soy sauce

wildeverose · 17/06/2021 17:14

No I'm not stuck in the thatcher years - although that did make me laugh! I'm 30 years old 😂
It's a light hearted comment that some of these are absolutely not what most people would call a simple dish. No need to get your knickers in a twist. They indeed all sound delicious, but a jacket potato is simple, not most of these.

I regard a jacket potato as a pain in the arse actually!

Each to their own

Haricots a la sauce de tomate on toast.
I think that Heinz have changed their recipe recently - I used to love beans on toast, but the last couple of times I’ve had it, the sauce was thin, tasteless and not rich and tomato-ey like it used to be. I think it’s because they’ve reduced the sugar and salt - which passes me of. I’m an adult, and I am capable of balancing my diet so that the occasional higher salt, higher sugar treat of beans on toast won’t kill me.

I haven’t tried any of the other brands or the supermarket ones - I assume they are all pretty similar.

mbosnz · 17/06/2021 17:40

A poached egg sandwich.

Okay, I get that poaching an egg is something some people might find challenging.

Apart from that, get two pieces of bread. Butter them. Poach egg. Put egg on bread. Add salt and pepper, and chives.

Eat.

CarolinaWeeper · 17/06/2021 18:17

I really don't think you can beat proper bread with salted butter.

Also love nice white toast spread with both chocolate spread and marmalade.

Jacket potato topped with Boursin.

Soft boiled egg and soldiers.

Baked camembert, red onion chutney and baguette for dipping.

purplecorkheart · 17/06/2021 18:20

spaghetti carbonara. Chicken and Broccoli bake is my favourite though.

CarolinaWeeper · 17/06/2021 18:21

I also adore bread with goats cheese, truffle oil and honey.

StevieNix · 17/06/2021 18:31

A proper crispy (non of the microwave rubbish) oven cooked jacket potatoe, with tons of good butter and grated extra mature cheddar on top. With creamy coleslaw on the side.
Chicken super noodles on a slice of cheap white toast topped with grated cheese.
A bacon sandwich with smoked bacon, cheap white sliced bread with tons of butter.
Richmond sausages (I know there arseholes and eyes but they’re so delicious) with mashed potato, tinned green beans and extra thick bisto gravy.

I do actually cook healthy good meals but the above are such comfort foods from childhood.
