Sister in law brought a cake for DH but not me

Sister in law came over.
I was in the shed doing stuff.
Walked into the kitchen and her and DH were scoffing cake. Both look guilty and body language was very ‘together’.

They were sort of guarding the cake, I was not offered any, it was a bit awkward and so I walked off to do job.

Turns out she made the cake for him and wanted to see him eat a slice and see his face.

I think this weird and and exclusionary and you don’t come around to a family home with a cake for one person or if you do it still gets offered to be shared.

DH says she just wanted to do a nice thing for him. (Not birthday or a reason)

I think both of them were weird and exclusionary.

faithfullbird20, I think is kind of normal to complain about your partner to your siblings and friends as long it is the partner concercerned initiating it. I do that with my sisters all the time. Maybe my family is weirdGrin

custardbear · 14/06/2021 13:06

You need your DH to tell her that she may not like you but you're a team and she needs to grow up and include you, it's destructive and it's unfair for you - he needs to stop that

Damnloginpopup · 14/06/2021 13:17

Get one of those cake swords like the Queen uses then cut a slice of cake and a slice of arsehole.

Feel free to have lots of cake.

I’d start chatting to her about your amazing sex life

bemusedmoose · 14/06/2021 17:09

My ex and his mother would do this! So bloody rude. She would bring him round a goody bag of snacks and yogurts for his work lunch boxes for the week (like I didn't bloody shop!) he was over 40 for gods sake. no one but him could touch them. Never brought me or the kids anything. Really pissed me off and when I said it was rude - I was the one in the wrong!

faithfulbird20 · 14/06/2021 18:34

She made him a cake and wanted to see him eat a slice and see his face? What for?! Is it just me or are some brother/sister relationships downright creepy. Almost as if the sister is crushing on the brother.

Is she single? It's given me strange vibes like that friends episode.

I find it creepy when my SIL sends kissing emojis to hubby. Ewww. Thank God he ignores.

Exactly.

faithfulbird20 · 14/06/2021 18:36

Buy a cake. You and the kids eat it and tell ur hubby he can't have any because he already had some with his girlfriend.

OccaChocca · 14/06/2021 20:12

Well, she sounds like a right charmer.

I would be inclined to totally ignore her at any event. I would also ask DH not to invite her but go to hers if he wants to see her.

katy1213 · 14/06/2021 20:26

So she brought a family-sized cake and left it to be shared?
Bloody hell, what a fuss about nothing - are you always this difficult?

After she'd stared lovingly into his eyes as he ate his slice 😂 Who wouldn't find that weird?
Lambtales · 14/06/2021 20:33

My MIL does this sometimes with food she's bought over especially for her son. Makes a point of telling me that it's just for him.

But my husband will make me eat it out of principle!

I’m amazed this thread has 7 pages

In front of her, I hope?

Scarby9

You are the sort of person I’d have as a friend. Someone quick thinking and clever with words (nothing like me).

Carbara · 14/06/2021 22:58

No one in this story is coming across very well —weirdos— 😂

Carbara · 14/06/2021 22:59

That’s cool that the strike through doesn’t function. Well done, site people.

DeepThinkingGirl · 14/06/2021 23:31

My SIL tried doing that, I helped myself to my husbands portion and made it clear I don’t tolerate that kind of exclusion.

And didn’t thank her

faithfulbird20 · 14/06/2021 23:41

@Scarby9 what would you have said if she turned around and said it's only for my brother.

DeepThinkingGirl · 14/06/2021 23:55

faithfulbird20 I would say “we are one and the same, especially when it comes to cake”. And gobble joyfully.

NWojtanowski · 15/06/2021 21:14

This seems to be an almost creepily close relationship with brother and sister.

NWojtanowski · 15/06/2021 21:26

I wonder if she’s the little/only sister who was “annoyed”, “insulted”, or “jealous” that her brother has another girl who’s “more special” to him than her? Even if she’s grown now, if she was a teenager or younger when the OP came around, she may still hold that grudge? It makes me think of how my daughter acts when her oldest big brother talks to others. She gets jealous and immediately tries to be the one who gets his attention; granted she’s almost 9 but I honestly cannot imagine how annoyed she will be when he gets a gf in the next year or so (he’s 16 next month). I can hope this “possession” thing she has will be something she completely grows out of or at least mostly grows out of it, but I can’t be sure. Just one example being: She will ONLY describe him as HER brother, even when I ask her about it and point out that he’s my son too or he’s Eddie’s brother too, she’s like Nope, he’s only mine. So, maybe(?) this SIL was just very close to your DH and she just never grew out of it and he may have never established appropriate boundaries for her emotions to grow from when they were children.
That’s how I think it “could” be working out.

DeepThinkingGirl · 15/06/2021 21:36

How’s your relationship with your mother in law OP??

Mirw · 20/06/2021 18:04

Your DH needs a slap. There are 4 of us (5 really but 1 is a"outcast by preference"). The only place we behave like that is at our Dad's. And in laws are "catered for" by Dad so we can have sibling time. We would never do it in our own homes or that if each other as that would be plain rude.
