OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I've used a Mooncup for the last 14 years, they are brilliant.

feelabitguilty · 11/06/2021 11:56

@BogRollBOGOF is it not painful then - they look huge? I find tampons excruciating - the once or twice I’ve tried (tiny ones) I’ve had to take them back out within an hour or so as find I can’t walk for the pain . Have had everything checked down there and told it’s maybe just muscles a bit tight or something . Would desperately love to get on with a mooncup, pads cost a fortune besides all the other disadvantages .

blobby10 · 11/06/2021 12:27

I've used one for years with really heavy periods, even when camping! One sister uses one too but our other sister finds them totally disgusting and won't even consider it.

I found tampons more messy especially once I realised they shouldn't be flushed down the loo - pulling out two full super plus tampons along with the resulting gush of blood then trying to put them in sanitary disposal bag - now that is a messy business Grin.

I got one as part of my new year resolution to reduce waste. I love it, wish I'd tried it sooner. I don't find it messy at all but I'm yet to use it in public toilets.

Last period dd and I were out hiking and I wore a pad for ease but im hoping to be completely done with pads soon

Everyday21 · 11/06/2021 12:30

Oh and I told my best friend when I bought it but no one else knows I use one. My friends and I are 30 now and don't really discuss periods these days

MouseholeCat · 11/06/2021 12:55

I've used a menstrual cup since I was about 21 and about half of my group of friends had switched to menstrual cups since our mid-20's. That includes a friend of mine with endometriosis and extremely heavy periods who manages much better with a cup.

What I don't understand with posts like yours is why it's totally okay to judge the choices of others despite clearly being uninformed about how you actually use a menstrual cup.

MsMoppet · 11/06/2021 13:01

I do. Have done for years. Take time to get used to but wouldn't go back.

tentosix · 11/06/2021 13:02

My sister does.

justfuckoffthelottayer · 11/06/2021 14:47

@Justmuddlingalong

I started using mine to deal with really heavy periods. Your description of using one sounds more like fisting, with a mental image of Sissy Spacek in Carrie.
Lol "fisting" I would not know I am afraid

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken

I used one for years but became a little paranoid about the possible prolapse link. It’s an incredibly minute risk but I’m pregnant with my third child and it’s something I do worry about. I switched to reusable pads instead which are equally brilliant. I’d be happy to use a moon cup again once there was some robust research to prove there is no link to prolapse.
Hang on what prolapse risk?!

I never judge anyone I just say what I think for me personally why would I judge anyone on what sanitary products they use I am being educated by posting this thread actually and so are a lot of other women I think.

If I remember correctly the risk of prolapse increases however only when it’s not removed correctly. So if you push it out like you’re in labour or don’t break the seal first and just pull it straight out then the risk goes up, if it’s removed correctly then I don’t think there is an increased risk.

Nataliafalka · 11/06/2021 15:37

Been using one for over 20 years. I cannot envisage using tampons anymore

RampantIvy · 11/06/2021 16:20

I wish I had known about them 20 years ago.

Do they include information like this in health talks at schools these days?

orinocosfavoritecake · 11/06/2021 16:49

Wonderful things. They shouldn’t sell them on the ethical green angle, they should just sell them as a better product than pads and tampons.

Grossbuttrue · 11/06/2021 16:56

I loved my mooncup and used one for over ten years. However I have a prolapse since having DS and sadly my mooncup leaks now so have had to go back to tampons.

pissface · 11/06/2021 17:10

I use this one
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Q4LX2N3/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcDSG3JE4N06MX8NSRW3CN

It's perfect for me, I don't need to empty it as frequently as I do changing tampons, I do get blood on me sometimes but it's my blood not anyone else's and I'm not scared of my own bodily fluids 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes.
Ruminating2020 · 11/06/2021 22:40

I don't go round asking my friends whether they use them and it doesn't come up in conversation.

They are easy to use in a cubicle with a sink in but they last a long while without needing to be emptied.

Saves me from buying towels and tampons and using sanitary bins in public toilets. 🤢

PandemicAtTheDisco · 12/06/2021 02:54

More of my environmentally conscious friends have mentioned using them or washable pads or pants. I've noticed a bit of a sneery tone used about those still using disposable pads and tampons.

Some people are really put off using tampons. When I was a teenager non applicator tampons were thought as being disgusting but teenagers seem much more comfortable with using the smaller sized cups and tampons.

I'd far rather risk a bit of menstruation on my hands than change a dirty nappy or clear up after pets, vomit or cum.

SingToTheSky · 12/06/2021 08:08

I didn’t really choose it (or the washable pads which I also tried) for the environmental reasons TBH. It is nice knowing that now I haven’t used any disposable product for about two years but it is a happy side effect IYSWIM.

I got more blood on my hands changing tampons and pads than I do with the cup. It was so heavy and now as long as I change it at the right time it’s so much cleaner.

MaMelon · 12/06/2021 08:27

This thread has been really inspiring - I’m very tempted to look out my mooncup and try it again.

How do you stop it whacking against your vaginal wall as it opens? I found that really painful, which put me off. There must be a technique to it.

What fold do you use ? Have the bit that's going to ping facing down if that makes sense so the bit that's already in the right place is what's closest to your bladder urethra and it pings the "other side"

SingToTheSky · 12/06/2021 17:52

I find that bit ok as the organicup is quite a soft cup. Apparently the moon cup brand is much harder and will have more of a “ping”.

Agree the fold makes a difference. I found removal quite tricky at first, but then learned the hotdog in a bun fold and it’s so easy.
