OK sorry to be goady but I know no one in rl who uses these most people have never heard of them and when they do they turn their noses up and would never want to use such a thing. Obviously great for those that do use it very green and eco friendly well done you but I cannot begin to contemplate using one I have super heavy periods low in iron because of and having to empty and wash that out getting covered in blood especially in public loos well... Why the hell would you far too much of a palaver if u ask me. Did buy some period pants but that's only so if leak it doesn't go everywhere but haven't even used those either.

I've used one for about 4 yrs now. Have heavy periods and use this with washable pads as this is the best way to manage without staining my clothes or leaking at work and humiliating myself. I get the eco benefits, and have been donating period products since I switched to reusable, but for me I switched for practical reasons.

AnonAnom940 · 10/06/2021 18:29

Does it ever all tip out when it's in? For example a tampon absorbs the blood so even if it's not in right, it's really only spotting. But a moon cup holds more than a tampon anyway so has a fair bit of liquid free in it. That's what I'd be worried about

Can you swim with a moon cup in?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 10/06/2021 18:32

I used one for years but became a little paranoid about the possible prolapse link. It’s an incredibly minute risk but I’m pregnant with my third child and it’s something I do worry about.
I switched to reusable pads instead which are equally brilliant.
I’d be happy to use a moon cup again once there was some robust research to prove there is no link to prolapse.

It is held firmly in place. The only time I can feel mine is when I'm running and it's been in for a while or doing some vigorous star jumps

I only found out some friends used them a few years ago when there was a big campaign about homeless women and their lack of San pro and people.were donating San pro in hand bags which prompted the discussion

Justmuddlingalong · 10/06/2021 18:46

I think the talk of prolapse showed that it was caused by women not breaking the suction before removal.

Peach01 · 10/06/2021 18:50

This is making me want to try. I've hated tampons since having a baby.

Heavy period girls, has there been any leakages during the night?
I hate having a tampon in in case I over sleep & it's on too long. I still always leak.

Do you carry a back up when you're out? I have the kind of luck where I'd drop it down a public toilet.

I’ve been swimming with no issue at all.

@Staffy1

They sound horrible. I don't like the idea of a cup of blood swishing around until it's removed. Much rather it was absorbed. My preference is tampons. No sitting in a mess or having something uncomfortably wadding up your arse, as with pads and no cup of blood sloshing around and possibly making a mess on removal, as with moon cups.
It doesn't slosh around! GrinGrinGrin You're not even aware that it's in most of the time. And you don't get that horrible feeling of pulling out a dry tampon on lighter days.
Justmuddlingalong · 10/06/2021 20:34

It's about the size of an eggcup, not a window cleaner's bucket. There's no sloshing involved.

I've had the very odd leakage first thing in the morning but never as bad as with a tampon. I used to flood every morning.
Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 10/06/2021 20:38

I use one but I use social media as in YouTube and insta to see other people that use them.
'Precious Stars' on YouTube are brilliant and normalises it completely but with honesty.
I don't like disposable pads and I feel cleaner using a menstrual cup although I don't think anyone would be any less clean either way.
I like them for the environmental impact and also I hate the sweating from a plastic backed pad.

User52739 · 10/06/2021 20:38

I use one and know a handful of people who do, but I move in very crunchy, eco-conscious circles.

I like it because it needs changed far less frequently than a tampon. I don’t rinse it in public loos, just give it a wipe with loo roll. It has helped me with my period cramps - not sure of the science behind that but they’re definitely less painful. And I find it more comfortable to wear than a tampon.

However... periods are very firmly in the ‘do what suits you’ camp. It’s great that mooncups are environmentally friendly but absolutely nobody should feel pressured to use one if it doesn’t suit them. The best period product is the one that suits your needs and preferences - end of.

BrilliantBetty · 10/06/2021 20:40

I just use Tampax honestly. Never tried a moon cup though some of my friends have mentioned them. I would try one, just haven't got around to it yet.

Tenttalk · 10/06/2021 20:40

Before I went on the mini pill I used a mooncup. And again when I came off the pill to TTC. I went back on the mini pill immediately after birth both times but second time it's not stopped my periods. I'm hoping to get that sorted, but if I can't I'll look in to reusable pads, the idea of internal sanpro makes me queasy now!

We used reusable nappies as well.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 10/06/2021 20:40

I like them also because they have to be changed less frequently. Lazy fucker ha

HouseyHouse21 · 10/06/2021 20:41

I was also baffled by them at first and it took me a while to fully transition from tampons, but I love my cups now. I've been using saalt cups for a few years, with pads as back up but I've just ordered some period pants to try out.

Tenttalk · 10/06/2021 20:42

And when I did use a mooncup I never had to change it in public as they're really capacious. I could go a full 12 hours. It was fab and much better than a tampon.

Thank you! It still makes me a kitties nervous so I’ll stick to the reusables (when I’ve given birth)

maddiemookins16mum · 10/06/2021 20:43

@RampantIvy. I know. Started my periods August 1978, I was just over 14. I’m 57 in August and still going strong ☹️

HouseyHouse21 · 10/06/2021 20:43

Oh and I have seriously heavy periods too - I used to have to double up on Super Plus tampons just to get to work without leaking - my cup is a lifesaver.

Malin52 · 10/06/2021 21:03

I've used one for years and all my close friends do too after my recommendation. I wouldn't use anything else now. Tampons feel utterly disgusting, toxic and wasteful when I've been caught short. I can forget about it for the whole day at work.

I've had a few people wrinkle their nose and say how disgusting it sounds but tbh they are the kind of pearl clutchy, fragile type who would probably feign being sick at the news you've used a bath towel more than once.

This! Most people I know can pop it in in the morning, have a full day at work even go out for dinner without changing. I don't think I've ever had to deal with it while not at home.

I've used one camping with long drop toilets in Canada with no running water!

ButterflyBitch · 10/06/2021 21:07

I use a menstrual cup. I never have to change it out and about as it lasts all day so only have to deal with it at home. Chuck a washable pad on for the heavy days in case there’s a leak and jobs a good’un.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/06/2021 21:08

I use one.

I actually first bought it when I was TTC to prevent post-coital leakage, and then just carried on using it after DS was born. Beats paying for tampons!
